Diagnosis and Plant Disorders ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Objectives ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
This is NOT an entomology and pathology class! ,[object Object],[object Object]
Key Terms ,[object Object]

Challenges to diagnosis ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
What is disease? ,[object Object],[object Object]
Two Major Groups of Plant Health Problems ,[object Object],[object Object]
Diagnosis is a systematic process ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Systematic Steps to Diagnosis ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
1. Accurately identify the plant.
So, is this “normal?”
2. Look for a pattern of abnormality.
Non uniform usually = living causal agent
Uniform usually = non-living causal agent
3. Carefully examine the site.
Never underestimate site factors!
4. Note the color, size, and thickness of foliage.
Various leaf irregularities may give you a clue…
5. Check the trunk and branches.
What caused this damage?
6. Check the roots and root collar.
This frequently overlooked area is often the “root of the problem.”
Healthy roots and dead roots
What root/soil investigation can show you…
As you go through the process, try to eliminate certain possibilities… pH? pH!!! X X ??? ???
… and an opportunistic leaf spot. Poor tree health is rarely the result of one condition, but rather a complex [a combination of factors that lead to the stress of decline of a tree] of abiotic and biotic contributors. Stress this to the tree owner!
In Diagnosis, practice makes perfect…well, better. ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Diagnostic Process – Questions?
Symptom vs. Sign ,[object Object],[object Object]
Symptom or Sign?
Symptom or Sign?
Symptom or Sign?
Leaf spot – patches of disease or other damage on plant foliage ,[object Object],[object Object]
Leaf blotch – irregularly shaped areas of disease on plant foliage ,[object Object],[object Object]
Blight – any disease, regardless of causal agent, that kills young, plant growing tissues ,[object Object],[object Object]
Scorch – browning and shriveling of foliage, especially at the leaf margin ,[object Object],[object Object]
Wilt – loss of turgidity and subsequent drooping of leaves ,[object Object],[object Object]
Canker – localized diseased area, often shrunken and discolored, on stems and branches ,[object Object],[object Object]
Stunting – growth reduction of organisms, in this case, plants ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Gummosis – exudation of sap or gum, often in response to disease or insect damage ,[object Object],[object Object]
Rust – disease caused by a certain group of fungi and characterized by reddish brown spots ,[object Object]
Gall – swelling of plant tissues; frequently caused by insects nematodes, fungi, or bacteria ,[object Object]
Chlorosis – whitish or yellowish discoloration caused by lack of chlorophyll; often used in referring to a plant’s foliage ,[object Object]
Necrosis – localized death of tissue in a living organism
Dieback – condition in which the ends of the branches are dying
Powdery Mildew – white or grayish fungal growth on the surface of stems or foliage
Vascular discoloration – darkening of the vascular tissues of woody plants in response to disease
Witch’s broom – plant disorder in which a large number of accessory shoots develop ,[object Object]
Symptoms can be non-specific ,[object Object],[object Object]

Signs and Symptoms Questions?
Tree stress ,[object Object],[object Object]
Acute stress ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Chronic stress ,[object Object]
How stress exhibits itself ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Common causes of stress ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Can you “save” my tree?
Stress Questions?
Break???
Abiotic Disorders ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Types of abiotic disorders ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Soil and Site Problems ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Physical and Mechanical Injuries ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Competition and Allelopathy ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Pollution Damage ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Chemical Injury ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Biotic Disorders ,[object Object],[object Object]
What is an insect?
NOT an insect!
Insects… ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Feeding damage is characterized by the mouthparts ,[object Object],[object Object]
Chewing Insects ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

“Marginal” feeders

Piercing-sucking Insects(?) ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Insects… ,[object Object]
Nematodes ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Diseases ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Fungi ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Diseases that cause defoliation – loss of leaves from a tree or other plant by biological or mechanical means
Vascular Diseases
Bacteria ,[object Object],[object Object]
Phytoplasmas and Viruses ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
How can I be learn more? ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]

Isa diagnosis and plant disorders

Editor's Notes

  1. Not specific disorders but what to look for to be able to tell Best part of this class is to learn this process (nothing) What is a physiological disorder? however…
  2. I cannot stress this enough. Take time to investigate! It’s my experience that most arborists/ horticulturists do NOT do this. When that’s completed you must make the appropriate recommendations.
  3. Think like a non-arborist – like you know nothing about trees
  4. I like to define my terms – in most cases this evening disease will mean the following: EPA’s experiment to test emissions from trees – wrongfully thought of as “pollutants.”
  5. Following are a few slides of a disorder…can you guess what happened from these clues?
  6. It’s more than just identification. Anyone know what this is?
  7. You must know the species and everything about the plant. Think Michael Dirr!
  8. Do comparisons with other plants on the site, especially of the same species. Look for differences in color or growth.
  9. Often cross species lines – this can be a huge help
  10. As we’ll discuss later, various foliar symptoms can give clues as to the disorder involved. Look at the location of the affected foliage as well. Leaves at the top of the tree that are affected usually indicate a vascular disruption. pH problems may appear only on one side.
  11. The severity of trunk damage is almost always more than what is usually considered. ISA formula.
  12. .
  13. Consumer confidence in the industry is poor. “Flip” diagnoses can make you look bad – who does the consumer trust? Usually, (unfortunately) someone on TV.
  14. Example of borer holes vs. the causal factor. Questions on the diagnostic process?
  15. Rust as a symptom
  16. There can be many causes for a specific symptom. Ash rust. Don’t have a narrow focus.
  17. Questions on signs and symptoms?
  18. Barrel example
  19. Insect defoliation, some herbicide damage, freeze damage
  20. Nutrient deficiency, drought, pH, improper light intensity
  21. Heavy fruit production; most common causes of tree stress are site and/or environment related: inadequate water, extreme cold, adverse soil conditions – compaction, mechanical injury Stress is NOT irreversible. If the stress factor(s) can be identified, it is possible to alleviate the condition and improve the health of the tree. If only secondary facors are identfied and treated, the tree will likely continue to decline.
  22. Stress may be reversible if you correctly identify the primary cause. Borer example. Questions on stress?
  23. Book’s construction damage example; borers again
  24. A reason not to over plant. Treatment: reduce competition.
  25. Usually inhibition is minor and of importance on young plants. Most every plant has some capacity to produce an allelopathic reaction. Juglone. Tall fescue and other grasses have strong influence on young trees.
  26. Treatments – remove the source or wash the foliage
  27. Show sample of damage; odd curl or “cupping”, parallel venation; others may “bleach” leaf of chlorophyll (chlorosis). Soil sterilants will have long term effects. Apply herbicides according to label and keep them away from trees! Temperature effects.
  28. Questions on the abiotic disorders?
  29. Three body parts, 6 legs, antennae
  30. Why is this important?
  31. Bagworm, gypsy moth, tent caterpillar NOT WEBWORM
  32. Asian longhorn beetle, emerald ash borer
  33. Oak wilt – sap feeding beetle, pine wilt -
  34. Questions on insects/nematodes?
  35. Tobacco mosaic. Questions about diseases?
