This document discusses the optimization and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of different profile elements in a regenerative rotary air preheater. It begins with an introduction to rotary air preheaters and describes the various profile types used as heat transfer elements. Experimental measurements from a coal-fired power plant are presented. CFD models of five profile elements are analyzed to determine their outlet air and flue gas temperatures. The results show that the advanced clear element profile provides the best performance with higher air outlet temperature and lower flue gas outlet temperature compared to other profiles.
Thermal analysis of cooling effect on gas turbine bladeeSAT Journals
Abstract Performance of a gas turbine is mainly depends on various parameters e.g. ambient temperature, compressor pressure ratio, turbine inlet temperature etc. The most important parameter to increase the life of the turbine blade is the cooling of the blade, which is necessary after reaching a certain temperature of the gases passing through the blades. Various types of cooling models are available for a turbine blade cooling. The power output of a gas turbine depends on the mass flow rate through it. This is precisely the reason why on hot days, when air is less dense, power output falls off. This paper is to analyze the film cooling technique that was developed to cool gases in the initial stages of the turbine blades, where temperature is very high (>1122 K). It is found that the thermal efficiency of a cooled gas turbine is less as compare to the uncooled gas turbine for the same input conditions. The reason is that the temperature at the inlet of the turbine is decreased due to cooling and the work produced by the turbine is slightly decreased. It is also found that the power consumption of the cool inlet air is of considerable concern since it decreases the net power output of gas turbine. In addition, net power decreases on increasing the overall pressure ratio. Furthermore, the reviewed works revealed that the efficiency of the cooled gas turbine largely depends on the inlet temperature of the turbine and previous research said that the temperature above 1123K, require cooling of the blade. Abstract This paper is the first part of a two-part study aiming to introduce a new integrated approach to evaluate the techno-economic value of recuperator retrofit on existing gas turbine engines. The original gas turbines are designed for combined cycles so that the pressure ratios are moderate to secure suitable exhaust temperatures. One way to enhance the thermal efficiency of some gas turbines is by using recuperation to recover some of the exhaust heat. In this part, the developed model is described and implemented for two gas turbine engines so the obtained characteristics are evaluated against the actual data. The new approach will assist users to select the suitable gas turbine models with favorable recuperator characteristics based on a technical and economic prospective. Besides, the performance results are used to design an appropriate shell and tube heat exchanger. Moreover, a new technique has been established to define the typical heat exchanger parameters in order to ensure the highest possible improvements over the original cycles. One of the main features of this method is that it depends only on the velocity of hot and cold heat exchanger streams from which the rest of the heat exchanger design and performance characteristics were derived. Key Words: integrated approach, techno-economic value, recuperation, shell and tube heat exchanger, velocity

Enhancement of Heat Transfer Analysis and Optimization of Engine Fins of Vary...ijtsrd
The Engine cylinder is one of the major automobile components, which is subjected to high temperature variations and thermal stresses. In order to cool the cylinder, fins are provided on the cylinder to increase the rate of heat transfer. By doing thermal analysis on the engine cylinder fins, it is helpful to know the heat dissipation inside the cylinder. The principle implemented in this project is to increase the heat dissipation rate by using the invisible working fluid, nothing but air. As know, by increasing the surface area we can increase the heat dissipation rate, so designing such a large complex engine is very difficult. The main purpose of using these cooling fins is to cool the engine cylinder by air. The main aim of the project is to analyse the thermal properties by varying geometry, material, distance between the fins and thickness of cylinder fins. Parametric models of cylinder with fins have been developed to predict the transient thermal behaviour. The models are created by varying the geometry circular and also by varying thickness of the fins for both geometries. The 3D modelling software used is Pro/Engineer. Thermal analysis is done on the cylinder fins to determine variation temperature distribution over time. The analysis is done using ANSYS. Thermal analysis determines temperatures and other thermal quantities. In this thesis, using materials cast iron, Copper and Aluminium alloy 6082 are also for cylinder fin body. Thermal analysis is done using all the three materials by changing geometries, distance between the fins and thickness of the fins for the actual model of the cylinder fin body. K. Karthikeyan | C. Analysis and Design Methodology for Thermoelectric Power Generation System fr...Omkar Kamodkar
This paper combines heat transfer and
thermoelectric conversion techniques to create a
thermoelectric generator device for a single-cylinder, fourstroke petrol engine. The system is made up of heat absorbers,
thermoelectric generator, Thermoelectric Generator (TEG)
modules, and an external heat sink. To achieve the goal of
absorbing heat and increasing thermoelectric conversion
efficiently, the heat exchanger surface area and heat-exchange
time could be increased. Thermoelectric generators convert
waste heat into energy directly. This technology will also help
energy conversion systems work better overall. Despite the
fact that TEG production is limited by available technologies,
feasible electricity generation is possible from waste heat
generated by automobiles. The effect of using passive heat
sinks and heat absorbers made of a flat plate with fins of
various cross-sectional areas and materials with forced
convection heat transfer, as well as how current, voltage, and
power are varied, is investigated and presented in tabular
format in the current numerical analysis. By plotting the
results of the analytical and numerical method on relevant
graph, the results of both methods were compared

Improving boiler efficiency by using air preheaterNetha Jashuva
Abstract: Air pre-heater is a heat transfer surface in which air temperature is raised by transferring heat from other media such as flue gas .Hot air is necessary for rapid combustion in the furnace and also for drying coal in milling plants. So an essential boiler accessory which serves this purpose is air pre-heater. The air pre-heater are not essential for operation of steam generator, but they are used where a study of cost indicates that money can be saved or efficient combustion can be obtained by their use. The decision for its adoption can be made when the financial advantages is weighed against the capital cost of heater in the present paper we have taken up the operation and performance analysis of LJUNGSTROM AIRPREHEATER27VITM 1900 of 2x210 MW capacity Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant, Kalamala and compare with Rothemuhle air pre-heater. In analysis of performance preventive measures for corrosion of heating elements has been studied, and also air heater leakage, corrected gas outlet temperature and finally gas efficiency has been calculated.
Simulation Based Interpretation and Recent Trends on Performance Analysis on ...ijtsrd
The heat transfer system is of great importance in many commercial and domestic applications. Likewise, IC engine always maintained at the working temperature for good ex. The improper generation distribution of temperature affects the performance and reduces the efficiency of the engine hence to the vehicle automobile. The performance of automobile Radiators can be substantially improved by a number of augmentation techniques. Heat transfer can be increased by active and passive flow control techniques or either with the incorporation of Nanofluids. As in order to remove the excess temperature, we need some cooling system in the automobile. The cooling system can be of two types Air and Water cooling system. Air cooling system is generally used in two wheelers and airplanes. The air directly takes the heat from the surface of the engine through the fins available on them. In the water cooling system, a water jacket is provided around the engine which carries the heat of the engine and releases this heat to the atmosphere with the help of a component called a radiator. The radiator basically consists of the upper tank, lower tank, tubes, fins, thermostat, the inlet port and outlet port, pressure cap. In the present work, Simulation Based Interpretation and Performance Analysis on Automobile Radiator through NanoParticle Fluids on modeled setup will be done trying to incorporate the condition of the automobile by using Nanoparticle fluids of Al2O3 and CuO. Water will also be taken to compare the performance of the Nanofluids. Results of numerous experimental and Ansys CFD solvers will be illustrated. CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
