Intro to IoT
The IoT is the networking of any objects where the connectivity enhances the
usefulness of the objects.
Objects can be anything physical:
Ø  A Car
Ø  An Appliance
Ø  A Cow
Ø  A Honeybee
Ø  A Person
Once objects are enabled with connectivity, they become the Things of the IoT.
Things can be simple devices such as a wireless water detector for a sprinkler system
or they can be complex systems of devices such as mining dump trucks or factory
robots with many Things inside them that combine to make a system.

What is a Thing Made of?
© 2015 JVE Consulting 8
Elements:
The pieces inside Things that make them Smart, able to
connect, and able to sense or control their environment
Elements also include Software
Elements
  Most important
  Sensors/Actuators
  Connectivity
  Processors
  Software
  Why?
Sensors will be everywhere, they will be a huge volume of very low cost
pieces. Taiwanese can do this! Actuators will also be a big part, but not as
much as Sensors.
Connectivity is required. Certain types will do better than others.
Processors will be needed for the brains of Things and above
Software will be the thinking part of Things, the Analytics, the User
Interface, the basis of the User Experience, and the Security
Without the right path ahead the market may be making the wrong
products

Security
Will hackers see the home with IoT as a better target than
businesses?
© 2015 JVE Consulting 22
Security Threats
  To all IoT Categories
  Industrial, Commercial, Consumer
  External and Internal
External is being fought all the time, never know the success or failure
ratio
Internal is weakest link and how most major intrusions are occurring
today
The Home with IoT will have a substantial increase in internal threat
potential
  As of the IoT
Security is weaker in every aspect, there are millions more attack points,
and the number of networks inside a building increases dramatically,
meaning there are more ways of entry and then jumping from one
network to another

And realizing your
Smart Home is
against you…
Security & Consumer IoT
  Vendors sell:
FEAR! PAIN! ROBBERY! LOSS of PRIVACY!
It is true, these are real threats
Nothing available yet to truly secure the home network
and still be end user friendly, everything is complex
and may require an advanced degree
  Standards are coming
Innovative start ups working on a solution
(Disclaimer: JVEC is involved in this effort)

Who Wins, Who Loses
© 2015 JVE Consulting 29
Possible Winners
  Chips
  ARM
  Huge win and long term
  Intel
  Modestly initially but
have power to gain over
time
  MEMS Sensors
  ST Micro, Bosch, TI and
others
  Cisco, IBM, Bosch, Siemens,
Huawei, ZTE, Japanese, …
  Medical device companies
  Most equipment costs
more yet still disposable
(single patient use)
  Agri-business companies
  Monsanto and John
Deere, for example
  Security companies
  Those that can truly
secure the IoT
  Certain Alliances
  IIC, OIC, …
© 2015 JVE Consulting 30
Possible Losers
  Wired Networks?
PLC is a nice to have, but low volumes versus Wi-Fi, time running out?
Wired Ethernet disappears from the home for the most part
Z-Wave?
Missing market power, more defensively positioned than offensively
However, making efforts to grow and establish presence in gateways and bridges
ZigBee?
Not in smart devices is a substantial problem
Cost versus Wi-Fi, Z-Wave and BLE is an issue
Loss will not be immediate and may turn around
  Chips?
PowerPC – dead
MIPS
Concern over no long term utility for home IoT unless they do something dramatic

Security Threats   Toall IoT Categories   Industrial, Commercial, Consumer   External and Internal   External is being fought all the time, never know the success or failure ratio   Internal is weakest link and how most major intrusions are occurring today   The Home with IoT will have a substantial increase in internal threat potential   As of the IoT   Security is weaker in every aspect, there are millions more attack points, and the number of networks inside a building increases dramatically, meaning there are more ways of entry and then jumping from one network to another © 2015 JVE Consulting 23

Security & ConsumerIoT   Vendors sell: FEAR! PAIN! ROBBERY! LOSS of PRIVACY!   It is true, these are real threats   Nothing available yet to truly secure the home network and still be end user friendly, everything is complex and may require an advanced degree   Standards are coming   Innovative start ups working on a solution (Disclaimer: JVEC is involved in this effort) © 2015 JVE Consulting 28

Possible Losers   WiredNetworks? PLC is a nice to have, but low volumes versus Wi-Fi, time running out?   Wired Ethernet disappears from the home for the most part Z-Wave?   Missing market power, more defensively positioned than offensively   However, making efforts to grow and establish presence in gateways and bridges ZigBee?   Not in smart devices is a substantial problem   Cost versus Wi-Fi, Z-Wave and BLE is an issue   Loss will not be immediate and may turn around   Chips? PowerPC – dead MIPS   Concern over no long term utility for home IoT unless they do something dramatic © 2015 JVE Consulting 31
