This patent describes a vehicle diagnostic system which diagnoses the state of the vehicle or the state of a
component of the vehicle remotely via wireless communication. Claim 1, the broadest independent system claim,
describes a vehicle diagnostic system arranged to diagnose the state of the vehicle or the state of a component of
the vehicle and generate an output indicative of the state. The diagnostic automatically establishes a
communications channel between the vehicle and a remote facility and wirelessly transmits the output to the
remote facility. The claim is well-written and fairly succinct with no unreasonable limitations. The overall scope
seems to be very broad. Claim 21 is an independent method claim with equivalent scope. This patent has two US
family patents.
This patent was cited by 729 patents. Several times of citations by major automotive manufactures including Ford,
Honda, and Toyotaindicate that many current (future) connected cars may (will be) implement the claimed system.
This patent actually used in 12 lawsuits. The defendants include Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Toyota, and Nissan.
Current patent owner is American Vehicular Sciences, which is an Acacia Research subsidiary. American
Vehicular Sciences holds over 300 patents relating to automotive safety, navigation, and diagnostics technologies.

This patent describes a vehicle communication system that remotely transmits the data from the vehicle subsystems
(e.g., tire pressure monitor, vehicle identification, brake system, lighting system, and fuel system) via wireless
communication. Claim 15, the broadestindependent method claim, describes a method of data communication
associated with a vehicle. The data communication includes the steps of converting the data from the vehicle
subsystems into the first data using the first communications protocol(e.g., SAE J1708) and converting the first
data into the second data using the second communications protocol(e.g., IEEE 802.11). The claim is well-written
and fairly succinct with no unreasonable limitations. The overall scopeseems to be very broad. Claim 1 and 8 are
an independent apparatus claim with equivalent scope.
This patent was cited by 32 patents. Progressive Casualty Insurance cited several times. This patent actually used
in 7 lawsuits. The defendants include Progressive Casualty Insurance and GM.
Current patent owner is Innovative Global Systems, which is an Intellectual Propertyholding company formed in
2009. Innovative Global Systems initiated total of 106 patent litigations.

This patent describes a vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication system which remotely transmits the sensordata
that is generated for detecting objects around a vehicle. If it is likely that a collision will occurbetween the
detected objects and the local vehicle, a warning is automatically transmitted to other vehicles so that the other
vehicles are notified of possible collision conditions. Claim 1, the broadestindependent system claim, describes an
inter-vehicle communication system that includes a local vehicle, objects, and other vehicles. The local vehicle
transmits sensor data around the local vehicle and receives sensor data from other vehicles. A processor in the local
vehicle displays the sensordata gathered from both the local vehicle and from the other vehicles. The processor
then determines the kinematic state for boththe local vehicle and for objects detected in the sensor data. The
kinematic state data is transmitted to other vehicles. The claim is well-written and fairly succinct with no
unreasonable limitations. The overall scopeseems to be broad. But, the claim element “a processor in the local
vehicle displays the sensordata” can be acted as a limitation that can provide a design around without infringing
claimed system.
This patent was cited by 290 patents. Several times of citations by major automotive manufactures including Ford,
GM, Honda, Hyundai, and Toyotaindicate that many current (future) connected cars may (will be) implement the
claimed system. This patent actually used to sue Ford.

Claim 1, the broadest independent system claim, describes a vehicle diagnostic system arranged to diagnose the state of the vehicle or the state of a component of the vehicle and generate an output indicative of the state. The diagnostic automatically establishes a communications channel between the vehicle and a remote facility and wirelessly transmits the output to the remote facility. The claim is well-written and fairly succinct with no unreasonable limitations. The overall scope seems to be very broad. Claim 21 is an independent method claim with equivalent scope. This patent has two US family patents. This patent was cited by 729 patents. Several times of citations by major automotive manufactures including Ford, Honda, and Toyotaindicate that many current (future) connected cars may (will be) implement the claimed system. This patent actually used in 12 lawsuits. The defendants include Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Toyota, and Nissan. Current patent owner is American Vehicular Sciences, which is an Acacia Research subsidiary. American Vehicular Sciences holds over 300 patents relating to automotive safety, navigation, and diagnostics technologies.

Claim 15, the broadestindependent method claim, describes a method of data communication associated with a vehicle. The data communication includes the steps of converting the data from the vehicle subsystems into the first data using the first communications protocol(e.g., SAE J1708) and converting the first data into the second data using the second communications protocol(e.g., IEEE 802.11). The claim is well-written and fairly succinct with no unreasonable limitations. The overall scopeseems to be very broad. Claim 1 and 8 are an independent apparatus claim with equivalent scope. This patent was cited by 32 patents. Progressive Casualty Insurance cited several times. This patent actually used in 7 lawsuits. The defendants include Progressive Casualty Insurance and GM. Current patent owner is Innovative Global Systems, which is an Intellectual Propertyholding company formed in 2009. Innovative Global Systems initiated total of 106 patent litigations.

If it is likely that a collision will occurbetween the detected objects and the local vehicle, a warning is automatically transmitted to other vehicles so that the other vehicles are notified of possible collision conditions. Claim 1, the broadestindependent system claim, describes an inter-vehicle communication system that includes a local vehicle, objects, and other vehicles. The local vehicle transmits sensor data around the local vehicle and receives sensor data from other vehicles. A processor in the local vehicle displays the sensordata gathered from both the local vehicle and from the other vehicles. The processor then determines the kinematic state for boththe local vehicle and for objects detected in the sensor data. The kinematic state data is transmitted to other vehicles. The claim is well-written and fairly succinct with no unreasonable limitations. The overall scopeseems to be broad. But, the claim element “a processor in the local vehicle displays the sensordata” can be acted as a limitation that can provide a design around without infringing claimed system. This patent was cited by 290 patents. Several times of citations by major automotive manufactures including Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, and Toyotaindicate that many current (future) connected cars may (will be) implement the claimed system. This patent actually used to sue Ford.
