1) Ionizing radiation is any electromagnetic or particulate radiation capable of producing ion pairs by interacting with matter. This includes alpha particles, beta particles, gamma rays, x-rays, and neutrons. 2) Different types of ionizing radiation have varying penetration depths and biological impacts depending on their linear energy transfer and quality factor. Alpha particles can be stopped by paper but are very damaging if inside the body. Neutrons must be slowed through collisions before being captured. 3) Radioactive materials undergo decay to become more stable, emitting ionizing radiation such as alpha or beta particles and gamma rays. Decay chains involve a parent nucleus decaying into a daughter nucleus which may also be radioactive.
