Project Management
Functions of Project Management
1) Forecasting
- Cost of Project
- Finance available
- Method of Payment
- Profit
- rate of Interest
- Government Subsidy and
Environmental Concern
Advantages
1) Overproduction and short supply of raw
material can be avoided if there is proper
production policy
2) It sets the sales target
3) Accurate forecasting reduces the cost of
reduction
4) Gives an idea about expansion of Existing
Unit, also helps to plan long term financial
requirement.
2) Planning
- It is the process by which manager anticipates the future and discovers alternative courses of actions opens to him.
- Proper planning is essential to utilise the available facilities
- Software based CPM and PERT used for planning of construction projects.
3) Organising
- it is the process by which the structure and allocation of jobs is determined
- Organising involves calculating activities, its grouping, people, materials, jobs, time etc.
- Establishing framework in which responsibilities are defined and authorities are laid
down.
Types - Formal Organisation
Informal Ogranisation
4) Staffing - It is the process by
which manager select, train,
promote and retire this
subordinate staffing is a
continuous process. Involves
developing and placing of
qualified people.
5) Directing - It is the process
by which actual performance of
subordinates is guided towards
common goal of company.
it involves Leadership,
Communication, Motivation
and Supervision
Elements of Project Management
Before Construction After Construction
PLANNING Scheduling Controlling
1) Identify the Goal
2) Defining the
Project
3) Timing of Project
4) Organising the
things
1) No. of activities
2)Available
resources
3) Inter activity
relationship
4) Time alloted for
different activity
1) Monitor activities
2)Revise dates
3) Updating the
activity
Classification of Construction Work
CONSTRUCTION
Minor Work Major Work Specific Projects
Original Works Repairs or Rehabilitation
works
Light Construction Heavy Construction Industrial Construction
Cost of Construction
In this Category, construction is
classified as belonging to minor works if
the amount of the contract is less than
Rs. 20,000.
It will classify as Medium works, if the
cost is between Rs. 20000 and Rs.
1,00,000.
Major works, if it is greater than Rs.
1,00,000.
Based on the life
requirements and
Nature of the Work
• In this grouping, if the construction is of a
Permanent nature with a long period of
life, then it is called a Permanent Work.
• If the life of span of construction is small
and can be dismantled and replaced, then
it is called semi-permanent.
• It will classified as temporary, if the
construction is of a temporary nature
using cheaper materials and can be
dismantled easily after use.
All new construction works – Original Work
Repairs of old Construction – Repair Work
Based on the Type of Structural
Members and Equipment used
 Light Construction is one which includes construction involving
light structural members, light foundations and not involving
heavy machinery and equipment.
Example – Residential and School building, Village and City road,
warehouses, light industrial shed, Village and town water supply and
sewage works etc.
 Construction is classified as Heavy, when it involves Heavy
structural members on massive foundations requiring the use of
Heavy plant and equipment.
Requirement – Large amount of Material, Labour and finance
Example – Tunnelling, Major irrigation works, Transportation projects
such as Railway, Highways and Harbour.
• Industrial Construction
This involves the use of specialist
plant and equipment and special
technology.
Example – Construction work for
Oil refineries, atomic power
plant, steel plants, fertilizer
plants etc.
Various Stages

Conceptual
Stage or
Initiation
Stage
Project identification.
Preliminary feasibility studies.
Setting project objectives and goals.
Initial stakeholder identification and
consultation.
Analysis and
Developement
of Ideas
Detailed feasibility study.
Site analysis and selection.
Preliminary design and layout.
Environmental and other regulatory assessments.
Budget estimation and financial planning.
Resource planning including labor, materials, and equipment.
Risk assessment.
Project timeline and scheduling.
Obtaining necessary permissions and licenses.
Design Stage
This is an important stage in the implementation of the project
Necessary field investigations and surveys are conducted
Then the design and drawings for the various elements of the projects are prepared. the final estimate
is then prepared.
Land acquisition is a tickish problem in many projects. Necessary efforts are to be initiated so that the
required area of land is obtained without much trouble
Appropriate designs are to be finalized during this stage iself. any changes made at a later stage will
affect the economy of the project.
Awarding the contract for construction
• Necessary tender documents are prepared, and the tender is finally
awarded to a contractor who has successfully executed similar major
projects in the past and his tender is also economically competitive.
Categories of Project
• As per new industrial policy resolution
1956, Government has accepted the
policy of socialistic pattern of society
and accordingly industries were
divided into following categories,
Schedule A :- These Industries are under
the control of regulation of Government
Example:- Atomic Energy, Railway and
Roads, Iron and Steel, Mineral Oils,
Irrigation etc.
Schedule B:-
These Industries are under government
control and progressively owned by
government.
Example:- Fertilizer, Road and Water
Transport, Automobiles, Alloys etc.
Rest of Industries were open for Private
sector, the various forms of Ownership are
given below
1) Individual Ownership
2) Partnership Firms
3) Joint Stock Companies
4) Co-Operative Industries and
Enterprises
5) State ownership Enterprises
Project Failure
Poor Planning: Inadequate time spent on
defining the project, understanding
requirements, or setting clear objectives.
Lack of Clear Objectives: Objectives are not
SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable,
Relevant, Time-bound).
Insufficient Resources: Not having the right
people, equipment, or budget allocated to
the project.
Inadequate Skills: The project team lacks
the necessary skills or expertise to complete
the project successfully.
 Poor Communication: Lack of clear communication
among team members, stakeholders, and other
relevant parties.
 Lack of Stakeholder Engagement: Key stakeholders
are not involved or consulted during crucial stages of
the project.
 Unresolved Risks and Issues: Risks are not
identified, assessed, or managed, leading to issues
that derail the project.
 Inadequate Change Management: Failure to
manage changes in scope, objectives, stakeholders,
or other essential project elements.
 Lack of Leadership: Ineffective project management
or lack of direction and support from senior
management.

  • 7. Classification of Construction Work CONSTRUCTION Minor Work Major Work Specific Projects Original Works Repairs or Rehabilitation works Light Construction Heavy Construction Industrial Construction
  • 8. Cost of Construction In this Category, construction is classified as belonging to minor works if the amount of the contract is less than Rs. 20,000. It will classify as Medium works, if the cost is between Rs. 20000 and Rs. 1,00,000. Major works, if it is greater than Rs. 1,00,000.
  • 9. Based on the life requirements and Nature of the Work • In this grouping, if the construction is of a Permanent nature with a long period of life, then it is called a Permanent Work. • If the life of span of construction is small and can be dismantled and replaced, then it is called semi-permanent. • It will classified as temporary, if the construction is of a temporary nature using cheaper materials and can be dismantled easily after use. All new construction works – Original Work Repairs of old Construction – Repair Work
  • 10. Based on the Type of Structural Members and Equipment used  Light Construction is one which includes construction involving light structural members, light foundations and not involving heavy machinery and equipment. Example – Residential and School building, Village and City road, warehouses, light industrial shed, Village and town water supply and sewage works etc.  Construction is classified as Heavy, when it involves Heavy structural members on massive foundations requiring the use of Heavy plant and equipment. Requirement – Large amount of Material, Labour and finance Example – Tunnelling, Major irrigation works, Transportation projects such as Railway, Highways and Harbour.
  • 11. • Industrial Construction This involves the use of specialist plant and equipment and special technology. Example – Construction work for Oil refineries, atomic power plant, steel plants, fertilizer plants etc.
  • 12. Various Stages in the Construction of a Project Construction Project CONCEPTUAL STAGE ANALYSIS AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE IDEA DESIGN STAGE TENDERING AND AWARDING OF THE DOCUMENT CONSTRUCTION OF THE PROJECT COMMISSIONING OF THE PROJECT
  • 13. Conceptual Stage or Initiation Stage Project identification. Preliminary feasibility studies. Setting project objectives and goals. Initial stakeholder identification and consultation.
  • 14. Analysis and Developement of Ideas Detailed feasibility study. Site analysis and selection. Preliminary design and layout. Environmental and other regulatory assessments. Budget estimation and financial planning. Resource planning including labor, materials, and equipment. Risk assessment. Project timeline and scheduling. Obtaining necessary permissions and licenses.
  • 15. Design Stage This is an important stage in the implementation of the project Necessary field investigations and surveys are conducted Then the design and drawings for the various elements of the projects are prepared. the final estimate is then prepared. Land acquisition is a tickish problem in many projects. Necessary efforts are to be initiated so that the required area of land is obtained without much trouble Appropriate designs are to be finalized during this stage iself. any changes made at a later stage will affect the economy of the project.
  • 16. Awarding the contract for construction • Necessary tender documents are prepared, and the tender is finally awarded to a contractor who has successfully executed similar major projects in the past and his tender is also economically competitive.
  • 17. Categories of Project • As per new industrial policy resolution 1956, Government has accepted the policy of socialistic pattern of society and accordingly industries were divided into following categories, Schedule A :- These Industries are under the control of regulation of Government Example:- Atomic Energy, Railway and Roads, Iron and Steel, Mineral Oils, Irrigation etc.
  • 18. Schedule B:- These Industries are under government control and progressively owned by government. Example:- Fertilizer, Road and Water Transport, Automobiles, Alloys etc. Rest of Industries were open for Private sector, the various forms of Ownership are given below 1) Individual Ownership 2) Partnership Firms 3) Joint Stock Companies 4) Co-Operative Industries and Enterprises 5) State ownership Enterprises
