3. Abstract
Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) uses a conventional classroom teaching system at
which it was still not enough to make students to have a deep understanding on a subject and
thus influenced the academic performances of the students. The conventional classroom teaching
involves the use of the projectors and whiteboards for the sole purpose of teaching students. So,
we proposed this approach regarding the introduction of the online teaching and learning system
that allows for better student learning. UTeM students were asked to give their thoughts about
current learning methods and implementation of online learning replacing mainstream learning
process on UTeM. The first objective of this report was to investigate the problem that faced by
UTeM students with the current teaching and learning system. The second objective of this
research was to identify students‟ opinions on introducing the new teaching and learning system
through online. The scope of this research was primarily on the benefits of the online teaching
and learning system to allow for better student learning and will not focus on the use of the
availability of the internet connection. All the data were collected by distributing the survey. The
distributed survey was made in the form of Google.doc. This survey was held up to a week and
distributed among UTeM students regardless of their backgrounds. The survey was handled to
find out students‟ thoughts on the online teachings. Based on the result of this survey, the
majority of the respondents answered that they were not satisfied with the current teaching
system in class. Furthermore, most students were also agreed that they can receive some
additional knowledge by watching these videos. As a conclusion, it was safe to say that with all
the evidence from the survey, the current teaching style failed to grasp the heart of the student
especially the Generation Y students who were exposed with various forms of information
sharing making the classic lectures lecturing in a lecture hall looked dull. The goal of this
research was to improve the teaching and learning method of UTeM students so that they can
have fun and have a deep understanding on a particular subject. And this may help students to
improve their grades or academic performances.

4. INTRODUCTION
Today are the days of the advanced world at where most of the civilized people lived
with a comfort and accommodate life with daily use of the technologies for social, research or
learning and living purposes. People in this era especially those who had born in generation Y,
really attracted and loved to use anything involving the electronic gadgets like smartphones that
can boosts their morale on doing something productive.
Currently, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia, Melaka (UTeM) uses a traditional classroom
teaching at which it was still not enough to help students to understand a particular subject and to
improve their grades and performances. The conventional classroom teaching involves the use of
the projectors and whiteboards to deliver the lecturers‟ knowledge to their students. Since the
typical classroom teaching had been carried for more than a decade, it has been proven that this
method was still not enough to make students to understand better, and this has to be changed.
So, we proposed this approach regarding the introduction of the online teaching and learning
system that allows for better student learning.
According to Stern (2003), online learning is education that takes place over the internet.
It is often referred to as “e-learning” among other terms. However, online learning is just one
type of “distance learning”, the umbrella term for any learning that takes place across distance
and not in a traditional classroom.
The main objective of this research was to investigate the problem and difficulties faced
by UTeM students with the current teaching and learning system. One of the problems that faced
by the students when attending the traditional classroom teaching was that they cannot
concentrate during the learning processes because of the unsuitable or uncomfortable
surroundings or may be due to the way the teachings delivered. This is because sometimes
lecturers tend to forgot to deliver all of their knowledge to their students and as for students, they

5. might be not comfortable or fully-adapted with the way the lecturer teaches. The second
objective of this research was to identify students‟ opinions on introducing the new teaching and
learning system through online. This was needed in order to know whether the proposed
approach was favorable or not for students. The focus of this research was primarily on the
benefits of the online teaching and learning system to allow for better student learning and will
not focus on the use of the availability of the internet connection or the solid medium to display
the online teaching and learning. The goal of this research was to improve the teaching and
learning method of UTeM students so that they can have fun and have a deep understanding on a
particular subject. And this may help students to improve their grades or academic performances.

6. Background
The online learning phenomenon has become more widespread in recent years with many
learning institutions adapting ways of incorporating modern technology into learning skills and
objectives to facilitate students learning.
Online Learning is becoming an ever-increasing way of facilitating education to students
who are unable to attend a traditional on-campus university as well as supporting on-campus
teaching. The most common systems used by educational establishments are asynchronous
learning systems (online learning systems) (Lewis, Snow, Farris, & Levin, 1999).
Online learning does not just denote how learning is conducted but is “an educational
philosophy for designing interactive, responsive and valid information and learning opportunities
to be delivered to learners at a time, place and in appropriate forms convenient to the learners”
(Boettcher, 2004) or, even more simplistically put, learning conducted using the web and a
personal computer (Petrova, 2004).
Clark (1991) suggested that teaching and studying at a distance can be as effective as
traditional instruction provided: (a) the methods and technologies used are appropriate to the
instructional tasks, (b) there is student-to-student interaction, and (c) there is timely teacher-to-
student feedback.
After a review of relevant educational literature it was found that there is no one specific
method for the analysis of online teaching and learning systems. Also often the strategies
presented are not student driven , hence the requirement of an alternate student focused method.

7. Methodology/Procedure
1: Data collection
The first phase of the study focused on identifying the problem that have been faced by the
students and the factors contributing to or impending students in online teaching and learning
system. The cross section survey design, which implies that the data were collected in
(Google.doc) was used. The primary technique for collecting the questionnaire, containing items
of different formats: multiple choice questions, dichotomous answer like “Yes” and “No”, the
linked type and the open ended questions. The online survey has been distributed to UTeM
student for duration of two weeks.
2: Analysis Procedure
For the survey that have been distributed, about 51 respondents that have answered our
questionnaires. Of 51 respondents, 31 of them were males meanwhile the remaining 20
respondents were females. All of them were UTeM students form the various faculties. Majority
respondents were come from Faculty of Manufacturing Engineering (FKP) which about 25
respondents. The survey is distributed regardless of the respondents‟ backgrounds. The survey
separated into 3 parts:
Part one is demographic
 This part consist five questions and it is all about the respondents‟ information.
Part two is to identify the problem and difficulties faced by UTeM students with current teaching
and learning system.
 This part consist seven questions, the questions were more to dichotomous answers like
“Yes” and “No” and one open-ended question.

8. Part three is to investigate students‟ opinions on introducing the new teaching and learning
system through online.
 This part consist of only two questions, the first question is linked type questions. For the
second question is open ended question.

9. Results and Discussions
Part 2 : Problems and difficulties faced by UTeM Students with current teaching and
learning system
1. Rate your understanding level of any subjects with the current teaching system in class.
The first question given to the respondents is to rate their understanding level of any subjects
with the current teaching system in class. This question is asked to know the level of
understanding in class for the student that used the conventional teaching system (lectures in
lecture hall). As this system had been used for a long time, so it‟s not a shocking result that
23 of the respondents or 45% of them which is almost half of the respondents answered that
they have a good understanding with the current teaching system or technique. Of course
their level of understanding differs greatly with the subjects taught, but 2 respondents stated
that they have poor level of understanding with the current teaching system. Maybe it was
due to the use of English language in class or the hectic life of a university student.

10. 2. Are you satisfied with the current teaching system in class?
From the question asked, 59% of the respondents or 30 respondents were not satisfied with the
current teaching method. Maybe this dissatisfaction came from the teaching system in UTeM
that applied the weekly change of lecturer. The system have its own advantages and
disadvantages where it can allow students to get a lecturer that specialize in each chapter, but this
intermission of different lecturer gave the student no time to familiarize themselves to the
method of teaching of different lecturer which have its own perk. So it‟s not a shocking result
where most of the respondents were not satisfied with the current teaching system. The rest 41%
of the respondents were satisfied with the teaching system maybe because they were comfortable
with the changes of lecturer or they can adept easily to the situation.

11. 3. Do you think the classroom environment is comfortable for you to learn something
new?(Air-conditioned, Quiet, Safe)
Based on chart 3, most of the respondents which were about 67% which is 34 respondents do not
think that the classroom environment is comfortable for them to learn something new. This may
be due to the number of respondents from the Faculty of Manufacturing (FKP) was the majority
of the respondents. The Faculty of Manufacturing have no class where it can fit their student as
their faculty is basically a factory hosing several different machines. So the faculty have to book
their class from other faculty. As they were booking other faculty class it‟s not weird that they
were given class at odd times like 8.00 in the morning or even 5.00 pm where sometimes the air
conditioner eventually will stopped working making the class uncomfortable. The rest of the
respondents which make up of 33% thought that the classroom environment is comfortable
maybe due to most of the time the class or lecture hall have no problem.

Chart 4 explains about the certainty of respondents on the well-equipped classroom environment.
26 respondents or 51% of the respondents think that the classroom is well equipped. This can be
seen from all class or lecture halls in UTeM that is well equipped with all the latest teaching aids
such as projectors and whiteboard so it is not a shocking result when the respondents think that it
is well equipped. The 49% of the respondents answered no, as maybe their faculty or the class
they enter is not maintained properly.

13. 5. Do you think that the classrooms are sufficient and available for all day to replace your class?
From chart 5, 42 respondents answered „No‟. They think that the classroom were not sufficient
and available for all day to replace their class. This was not weird as it had been analysed before,
most of the respondents who answered the survey were from the Faculty of Manufacturing
(FKP) which don‟t even have their own class or lecture hall. Most of the time, these students
have to go to different faculty to attend to their classes. The frequency that the students from this
faculty to have a sufficient or available class during peak or suitable hours are minimal as those
classes are prioritize towards the lecturers from their own faculty and due to that most of the
classes are postpone or even cancelled. The rest 18% of the respondents thinks that the classroom
were sufficient and available for them maybe due to their faculty have enough class to fit all their
students.

14. 6. Do you often ask questions on something that you can‟t understand to your lecturer?
The chart 6 shows the respondents‟ feedbacks on how or to whether they asked questions to the
lecturer when they don‟t understand the content of the lecture. Well, 55% of the respondents,
which comprises of 28 peoples answered „No‟ to the question. As the data stated, most of the
student don‟t ask question to their respective lecturer as maybe they were shy to voice their
question. This is not a weird situation as most of the students nowadays don‟t have enough
confidence in themselves to voice their thoughts. This may be due to their low self-esteem or
their low mastering of English language to ask the question as in UTeM most of the subjects
were taught in English. There were also some students who were shy to ask question from their
lecturer as they may be made fun of from their classmates. The remaining 45% respondents
stated that they asked question if they don‟t understand which was made up from the minority of
the group which have a high confidence and not shy to ask the questions.

15. 7. Have you ever came late to the class or missed a subject unintentionally? If yes, please
comment why.
This was an open-ended question. This question was used to know the biggest reason why that
most students came late or missed a class unintentionally. Most of them complaints that they
couldn‟t make it in time to class because they woke up late. The result was as expected after all.
As an engineering student, they definitely were constantly busied with the reports and projects
till they familiarize on sleeping late pass the midnight and this situation had become a very
common thing for them. Due to that, most of them woke up late the next day making them late to
class. The second reason is that the respondents were hindered by the unwanted events, weather
or in general the „Mother Nature‟ itself. Most likely the respondents who answered that use of
motorcycles or bike to go to class can save money in terms of fuel consumption rather than using
cars. So when Mother Nature decided to rain they will be most likely have to take shelter and be
late for class or miss their class.

16. PART 3 : STUDENTS OPINION ON INTRODUCING THE NEW
TEACHING AND LEARNING SYSTEM THROUGH ONLINE
1) From this question student were advised to choose only one answer from 7 statements as given
Bar graph 1 shows the first 4 questions that had been asked in the form of linked styled
questions. For this part, the information were collected regarding what UTeM students think
about this online learning system. Based on above graph, about 22 students agreed that online
learning system can be saved for them to watch it offline at later time, whenever they feel like to
re-watch it again. It was probably because some students only have internet connection when
they went to the campus, so they can watch it anytime and anywhere when they don't have an
internet connection. Next, about 18 respondents agreed that they had better understanding when
they learned something through online. This situation can be proven that, most of the students
especially the generation Y were really interested to use this platform since it was more attractive
and fun to use and learn. Furthermore, another 18 students also agreed that online learning
system was less stressful and more comfortable than conventional learning. Sometimes, some
students may have another replacement class at the same time and this may influence them to
skip one class quite often. This may leads to the drop of the students‟ academic performances. To
further, there were about total of 17 students agreed that they can ask any questions via the
online teaching platform with having to face the lecture. From my observation, students agree
with this statement because some of them were embarrassed to ask their lecture face-to-face.

17. Bar graph shows another 3 remaining questions in linked table chart. About 21 students agreed
that online learning can give them an or some additional knowledge. This was because online
learning system was not limited to only one type of subjects. More than 18 students think this
system can save their energy and space because they do not have to attend the class to receive the
lecture. About 31.3% students agreed that it was more flexible in terms of time. Thus, students
can replayed, paused and bookmarked the lecture video whenever they felt like to re-watch.

2) Do you prefer online teaching system more than the conventional teaching style? Why?
This was open ended questions that were distributed among UTeM students. Most of the students
preferred the use of online teaching system rather than conventional teaching style. Most of the
reasons that were collected were about how easy it was for student have better understanding on
that particular subject. In addition, they no need to feel shy to ask the question because they were
not directly asked the question face-to-face. Some of the students also state that, if they miss the
lecture because of personal matter they can referred this video of the lecture to watched it again.
Although most of the students agreed with this question, some of the students also disagreed with
this statement because they think if this online teaching system was introduced to the world,
students will become more lazy. If this is how students are educated, when they work anywhere
in the future they will be fired in the end.

18. CONCLUSION
In this 21st
century, at where information and knowledge is just at the tip of your finger,
the things we can do online have increased in repertoire. Online learning where students can
interact with many people from all walks of life was not only just a wishful thinking but it‟s a
reality in virtual form. This report had been prepared to see whether online teaching and learning
allows for better student learning. The survey with 51 respondents from the students of
Universiti Teknikal Malaysia, Melaka (UTeM) were taken as a data and a conclusion were
drawn. In the survey, the question asked about the problem and difficulties with the current
teaching system in UTeM to know what the student think of the current method and another part
asked about the student‟s opinion about the online teaching and learning system. As a
conclusion, it is safe to say that with all the evidence from the survey the current teaching style
failed to grasp the heart of the student especially these Gen-Y student who were exposed with
various forms of information sharing making the classic lectures lecturing in a lecture hall looked
dull. Even though the level of understanding for most of the student is higher than average but
there are various reasons that can make some students lose motivation or struggle with the
current teaching system and even the environment. The current learning system that utilize the
weekly change of lecturers and the environment that have various issues technical or more will
be one of the reasons that contribute to the failure of this classic method to grasp the heart of the
generation nowadays. For this Net-Generation, the idea of using their gadget to do everything is
a heaven on earth, so the online learning and teaching system is like a dream come true and
supported by the survey, these method have gain positive feedback. Disregarding the net-
addiction, by introducing this online learning and teaching method the students can also use the
net for something beneficial. The online learning can also solve some of the problem that the
student faced nowadays such as the weather condition that can be unpredictable making the
student miss class and the environment which is conducive for learning.

19. Recommendations
There are some recommendations on how online learning should be implemented.
1. UTeM can collaborate with other universities by using a website that all students can
access all slides and videos for learning. By doing so, students can understand a subject
even better.
2. We strongly encourage each campus to review the data to identify the needs and
challenges voiced by their respondents, and seek appropriate means to address them
accordingly.
3. An increase in resources focused on advocating and supporting technology in teaching
and learning is required at the campus level to meet the demands of instructors and
students. The necessity for additional support resources continues to be a pressing need
on the campuses. As the use, demand, and sophistication of technology increases, more
staff support resources are needed to keep pace. A review of the number of staff in the
instructional design and technologist roles, as well as the campus organization units, may
reveal strategies to achieve more effective and efficient support for teaching and learning
needs.
4. Add few other features like Dropbox, Discussions box, Quizzes, and Calendar to make
the online teaching platform to be more interesting and resourceful.
5. Online platform or website can be used to upload teaching videos for students to view.
The website can contain live stream of lecturers teaching and comment section for
students to ask question. There is also video download functionality for students to save
and download for offline viewing. ULearn system should be upgraded to support online
video functionality and contain all the functionality above.
