This article discusses developing an art education curriculum to address contemporary social issues like discrimination, bullying, and violence. The researcher created an interdisciplinary art course for high school juniors and seniors that used artistic projects to examine these issues. Students devised and created individual and group projects both in and out of the classroom to bring awareness to these topics. The curriculum was developed with the belief that art can cultivate empathy and enable positive transformation. It emphasized socially engaged art over a sole focus on artistic techniques. Students participated in teaching and assessment to take responsibility for their learning. The researcher found this approach reduced problems and helped students understand course material through visual culture.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1. Overview
This article written by David Darts, he works as assistant professor in the
department of art and art profession in New York University. This article is talked about a
transformation of art education in contemporary issues and the visual arts.
This issue in this article is developing the curriculum for the contemporary issues
and the visual arts. Besides that, the researcher state that the part of growing movement
of teachers and students at the high school who were choosing up to against hate and
violence. Researcher also had discussion about discrimination and bullies. They had
planned series projects that relate to this research. The researcher makes a course that
will help students in this problem. Social psychology perspective is the learning theories
that researcher used in this research.
The researcher builds a series artistic project for this issue in the class. The
names of this project are interdisciplinary course for high school juniors and seniors that
co-developed and taught within the art department. This course had taught to devise and
created a number of individual and collective artistic investigation and creative culture
interventions both within the classroom and the larger school community and to
addressed and examined contemporary issues. This course included art installation to
showed and performed about the issues of bullying, violence and discrimination.
2. Researcher also develops the curriculum around the belief that arts can facilitate the
development of an ethic of care and enabling participants to positively transform.
In this article, researcher state that three points to reach their goal. Firstly, to
making “things” meaningful: socially engaged art education. This point is to recognize
the need of art education more to production of artistic objects. Author also said that, not
only emphasis to materials, technics, and object but its more focusing to concepts,
problems and ideas. The participation of art education it is not might change the style of
evaluation and interpretations of art that relate to sociocultural issues. Researcher also
said that arts can develop of an ethic of care and from this also students can established
their identities and make meaning from cultural material. Culture materials mean is an
interdisciplinary field telling of relationship between people and their things.
Secondly are pedagogical frameworks, contemporary artworks and developing
social networks. Student participates in research, planning teaching and evaluation
process. In this article, researcher showed that student in this school take responsibility
to make this teaching and lesson planning to they know the result of this method. The
lesson template comprised three basic component parts. For example, the hook
activities that include role play exercise, dramatic simulations, interactive games and
multimedia presentations. Maintain the sense of unity during the many students
presentation throughout the semester of the group of students will expect that have
activities at the beginning and end of every lesson. It also had designed assessment as
a collaborative process between the students and instructors.
Last but not least, art education for art education sake. There is a growing body
of research indicating the arts and art education are fundamentals to cognition, learning
and citizenship.
3. According to the author those of us working for meaningful social change within
and beyond our art classrooms join a long of art educators who have recognized the
transformation of art and connection between art, education and social change.
2. A description of methodology
The research was held at one of Canadian suburban high school which is eight
grade and junior students take as respondent to observe developing the curriculum for
the contemporary issues and the visual arts.
Purpose of this study was to learn that art can reduce the problem of
discrimination, violence and bullying among students in suburban schools. Besides,
putting art in a curriculum that is not only able to make something work, but can
understand the work done.
This research also can develop curriculum around the belief that arts can
facilitate the development of an ethic of care, thereby enabling participants to positively
transform themselves, their communities and the worlds in which they live.
The analysis contained the students experience towards problem that they had
faced and they experienced with their own.
3. Evaluation
This article is relevant because the author had related their issues with current
issues in that school.
I agree with this method that researcher used. It is because the researcher got
positive result and good evidence to make this research more strong and people
will believe on this research.
4. I agree because this study is to implement the moral values to students that have
problems. Researcher also focusing around the visual cultures of student’s
everyday lives.
The method used by the authors is suitable for this research because the
researcher can get through to respondent and get more variables data and
different perspectives of people about the issues.
This researcher makes this research with ethical concerns because the author
had mention and makes a citation all the data that found in this research.
4. Discussion of implications
In this article, the implementation of visual cultures in school curriculum is very
important to increase creativity in students. The author also explained that this method
helped the students in making decision positively.
Based on current issues, the development of visual culture has changed the way
of thinking process, which is describe by researcher and the researcher also highlighted
with some literature review of journals that related with the issues.
I agree with the statement by King Mcfee (1966) “if we believe that art is to be
produced and enjoyed only by an aesthetic and intellectual elite or subculture of our total
society, then we might have reason for believing in social isolation of the arts. If, on the
other hand, we consider art as phenomenon of human behavior to be found wherever
form, line, color are used to create symbols for communication and to qualitatively
change the nature of experience, then art is related in some degree to all of society. If
we accept this definition we, as art educator, become involved in problem of society and
social change; we recognize art as one of the major communication systems of social
interaction and of society in transition.”
5. Nowadays, many problems happened in our education system especially in
school. At least we can use this type of research in our suburban school in Malaysia.
From this method of learning we also can produce students by follow the national
philosophy of education.
