Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry with 3 lines containing 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively that focus on nature. It originated in the 17th century influenced by courtship rituals and Zen Buddhism. While famous poets like Basho wrote haiku, many authors remain anonymous. Haiku remain a popular form of poetry today with the subject matter now including modern urban life in addition to nature.
