Why manage research data and write a
data management plan (DMP)?
• It is good research practice!
• It helps you save time and money.
• You will reduce the risk of losing your data.
• You will be able to anticipate complex ownership and user
rights issues in advance.
• It helps you support open access to create productive future
collaborations.
• You will meet your funder’s requirements.
• Your DMP reflects your managerial skills as a project leader.

• General description of the data used and produced
• Ethical and legal compliance
• Documentation and metadata
• Storage, backup, data transfer and access control
during the research project
• Opening, publishing and archiving the data after the
research project
• Data management responsibilities and resources

Take a moment to think about the data you use and produce
during research…
- “Can you see the huge value of the data?”
- “No? Please, think harder!”

For data management planning you need
• Knowledge of the best practices on research data
management
• A current data management plan template from
https://www.dmptuuli.fi/public_templates
• Current reseach data management guidance of the
university https://www.helsinki.fi/fi/tutkimus/palvelut-

training
• Discuss about your data management plan with a data
management expert
• 30 min time slots
• Pick the time for the meeting from the table:
