SXSW - Diving Deep: Best Practices For Interviewing UsersSteve Portigal
While we know, from a very young age, how to ask questions, the skill of getting the right information from users is surprisingly complex and nuanced. This session will focus on getting past the obvious shallow information into the deeper, more subtle, yet crucial, insights. If you are going to the effort to meet with users in order to improve your designs, it's essential that you know how to get the best information and not leave insights behind. Being great in "field work" involves understanding and accepting your interviewee's world view, and being open to what they need to tell you (in addition to what you already know you want to learn). We'll focus on the importance of rapport-building and listening and look at techniques for both. We will review different types of questions, and why you need to have a range of question types. This session will explore other contextual research methods that can be built on top of interviewing in a seamless way. We'll also suggest practice exercises for improving your own interviewing skills and how to engage others in your organization successfully in the interviewing experience.
User Experience 3: User Experience, Usability and AccessibilityMarc Miquel
This presentation introduces the most important usability models among other concepts (affordances, heuristics, etc.).
These slides were prepared by Dr. Marc Miquel. All the materials used in them are referenced to their authors.

Facebook is putting serious efforts into making its Messenger (eco-) system way more than a way for friends to have chats. In fact there are features published all the time including payments via Messenger. Everything is geared heavily towards sales and supporting e-commerce in particular at the moment, end of 2016. There is a big opportuntiy for customer service as well which is not highlighted nearly as often. The presentation shall inspire you as to what to actually use chat bots for, and while Facebook's Messenger is all over it you could translate it easily into bots using Microsoft's bot framework, WeChat or anything that involves interactive machine driven chats. Lee Rainie, director of Internet, Science and Technology research at the Pew Research Center, discussed his group’s latest findings about the role of libraries and librarians on April 3 at Innovative Users Group conference. The latest work shows that many people struggle to find the most trustworthy information and they express a clear hope that librarians can help them. He explored recent research about how people are becoming “lifelong learners” and that library services are an element of how they hope to stay relevant in their jobs, as well as find ways to enrich their lives. He drew on Pew Research Center studies about the information and media sources people use and how they decide what to trust.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
