Digital Literacy and Professional Development #heieBernard Goldbach
This document discusses digital literacy and professional development from a multimedia perspective for teaching and learning forums in Ireland. It provides tips on managing information and events using tools like Evernote, and outlines various conferences and chats for connecting and collaborating online. It emphasizes lifelong learning and sharing, and how new literacies around research, publishing, and rich media production need to be incorporated more fully into classrooms and learning workflows. The document advocates embracing mainstream technologies now available and connecting and collaborating through professional learning networks to help bridge digital divides.
Digital learners like Diana, Blanca, Doris and Louis are part of a generation exposed to digital media from a young age. Over 70% of 4-6 year olds and 68% of children under 2 use digital devices for at least 2 hours a day. Younger learners have developed multi-tasking skills from infancy and can extensively process information in parallel. Schools are incorporating technologies like document cameras, digital projectors, and interactive whiteboards to engage students and help improve writing skills while balancing structured learning with open access to knowledge.
Digital natives born in the digital age are adept at multitasking such as doing homework while listening to music or watching TV and using cell phones. They are more connected through technology and engaged in self-directed learning, creativity, and empowerment by hyper-connecting with friends and family online. Using projectors and document cameras in the classroom can help motivate students through varied teaching methods, ease engagement, rely less on textbooks, and encourage more student collaboration on projects to revolutionize learning.

Tablets are an important tool for teaching and learning through collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and character education. The document outlines health concerns around digital learning and provides tips for parents.
This document discusses the implications of multiple intelligences theory for education and provides examples of how educational technology can be used to engage students with different intelligences. It recommends that teachers differentiate instruction so each student can learn in their optimal way and that any topic should be taught through multiple methods activating different intelligences. Examples are given of digital storytelling, simulations, games, design tools, web tools, and adaptive programs that align with different intelligences. The benefits are seen as leveling opportunities, engagement, and fostering 21st century skills like critical thinking.

This document discusses the need to update education for the 21st century. It makes three key points:
1) Education needs to match the rapidly changing world where paper is obsolete and information becomes outdated quickly. Curriculums must be rethought and practices that weigh things down need to be cut or changed.
2) Assessments are where changes need to begin, with teachers committing to integrating technology, reviewing resources, and revising at least one unit with 21st century skills.
3) Technology overuse can disconnect people from real relationships. While connections are preferred over conversation, this leaves people emotionally vulnerable. Face-to-face conversations are still important. Schools must teach solitude and being alone
