This document discusses introducing liver surgery to a regional hospital in Port Macquarie, Australia. It outlines that there is a need for liver surgery due to common cancers like colorectal cancer that often metastasize to the liver. While liver surgery poses risks like bleeding and infection, the regional hospital has the local expertise, equipment, imaging capabilities and postoperative care needed to perform it safely. Preliminary results from 21 major and 4 minor liver resections over the past year were encouraging, with only one mortality and morbidity rates consistent with expectations. The introduction of liver surgery was seen as a challenging but exciting development that could help many cancer patients.
