Roy Grant, M.A., et al. conducted a review of family and childhood homelessness over a course
between a twenty five year span of the 1980 s to 2013. They reviewed journal articles, government
reports, and news stories to find any changes in conditions or the amount of family and childhood
homelessness. The review concluded family and childhood homelessness still exists but at a larger
scale than in the earlier years and a decrease in the attention given to childhood and family
homelessness. They also reported some of the factors leading to family and childhood homelessness
were the decline in economic conditions, increase of evictions, economic inequality, and domestic
violence. The review also noted a negative impact on a child s health and well being and a child s
behavioral health. Rent subsidies and shelter based programs have shown evidence to aid in
preventing childhood and family homelessness. They made suggestions to increase nutritional
programs as well as health and mental health services. This review supports my claim that

My Passion For A Graduate Degree
I was born in Inglewood, CA, the son of two immigrant parents. Growing up, I always knew the
importance of education; it was ingrained in me by my mother and father. They grew up in Mexico
where they both loved school until their economic hardships forced them to come to the U.S. and
work. I am the first person in my family to go to college and will be the first to pursue a graduate
degree. The passion for education that my parents instilled, as well as my cultural values, drives me to
pursue a graduate degree. Early in my undergraduate education I became interested in research and
statistics, specifically related to education. My passion for quantitative methods came after I enrolled
in my Psychological Methods class. This inspired me to expand my knowledge of statistics and go

Figurative Language In The Scarlet Ibis
It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in
the bleeding tree (James Hurst, The Scarlet Ibis ). This line of figurative language from Hurst s short
story shows the setting and how summer is gone, but autumn has not started yet. In literature, authors
use figurative language to emphasize setting or to add to characterization. In The Scarlet Ibis , Doodle
is a six year old disabled boy who is unable to walk. Brother , the narrator, works hard to get Doodle
to be able to things that normal kids do, but the pride he has for himself does not want to deal with the
embarrassment of having a disabled brother. In The Scarlet Ibis author James Hurst uses figurative
language to establish the theme of how pride can blind oneself from the things that really matter.
The metaphors used in the short story reveal to the reader the insecurity the brother has within
himself. The brother works hard with Doodle to try to get him to walk, and once they succeed he feels
great confidence in himself. Doodle struggles to move great distances, so getting him to walk further
develops the brother pride. After he succeeds in getting Doodle to walk, he learns something new
about his relationship with Doodle as well as learning that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed
that bears two vines, life and death (5). The pride Brother has for himself causes him to push Doodle
to work harder to achieve the goal of walking. He tells himself he is doing this for Doodle, that he
wants Doodle to feel good about himself. However, the brother wants to feel good about himself by
developing a non disabled brother. While Doodle does start to walk, the reader sees how the brother
disregards Doodles feelings in the process. Like seeds, which are the start of any vegetable, plant or
flower, pride is the start of a life, or a vine, that can lead to one of two outcomes, one that leads to a
more self confident life, and another that causes pain and suffering in others. Through the use of
metaphors the author reveals the narrator s own insecurity and how it causes him to make decisions
for the wrong reasons.

In John Keats s When I Have My fears and Henry Longfellow s Mezzo Cammin , the poets share their
outlook on death. Both writers filled themselves with the concern of dying before they created a
fulfilling life. Although Keats and Longfellow both portrayed their similar theme using parallel
structures and language, the two works differ in the two poets rhyme schemes and tones. In the
beginning quatrain of When I Have My Fears , Keats begins by writing about his doubt that his insight
might not have time to reach other people. He worries his most important thoughts will not be written

However, the beginning of the sonnets follow a different rhyme scheme. Keats chose to follow the
ABAB pattern while Longfellow selected an ABBA arrangement. Both then continue to follow the
standard sonnet structure CDCD EFEF GG and use the break in between the second and third
quatrains to shift thoughts, otherwise known as the volta. At the volta of each poem is where we truly
see how each poet feels about death. Keats appears more accepting of death where Longfellow
struggles with the idea of letting it conquer him. Besides the similar structure, another way the poems
compare is in the language the poets create. Keats and Longfellow admit to the fear that they will pass
before they have the opportunity to make their mark on the Earth. They chose to view death as vast
and imminent. The poets also show comparison in their writing by connecting nature to their works.
Keats looks up at the starred sky and reflects on his theme and Longfellow looks up a mountain.
Despite using similar structure, language, and themes, Keats and Longfellow create different tones
that depict their attitudes about death. In When I Have My Fears , Keats recognized death as
inevitable, but includes these elements to create a reverent and accepting tone. However, Longfellow
feels as though he will never live up to the life he desired for himself and uses the language and
