Assemblage is an art form that involves transforming everyday objects into art through non-traditional techniques. The presentation provided examples of assemblages created by various artists like Joseph Cornell, Michael DeMeng, and Lynne Whipple that incorporated found objects like photographs, dolls, bottles, and maps. Students were encouraged to be inspired by the examples but develop their own visions, and to collect materials with permission for their own assemblage focusing on possible themes of mythology, relationships, self-portraits, or memories.
This PowerPoint Presentation features the work of varied assemblage (including myself) which I put together for a ceramics and sculpture class last year.
Value painting assignments- posterized or monochromatic Joe Turek
These are my value assignments, they are purposefully easy, as they are the first real paintings my students complete. They practice making mixtures of color at different values, projecting images, tracing, using a grid, and free-handing. A good simple first set of assignments that they can choose between.

“Train of Thought” by Leo Bridle
Simple Outline
“A Journey for Love”
I. Leo Bridle and Ben Thomas were the film makers.
a. I believe they are in their late 20s and early 30s, and they graduated from the Arts Institute at Bournemouth.
b. From the United Kingdom.
II. The basic structure of the artwork is Film.
a. Material used was digital compositing software and all the animations were done by hand and not the compositing software.
b. The subject of the seemed to be the young artist and he seemed to have been in search of someone. Everything seemed to be between and a gray/sepia scale with a design using cut outs and wooden toys.
III. I think this whole film was based on love.
a. My 1st idea is that he is trying to find the woman he loved. He may have seen her before at the station and drawn her out of memory and may have come back to find her there. When he didn’t, he hopped on the train in search for her only to come up empty. I believe he used his drawing pad as some sort of map as to where she may have been. When he doesn’t find her, he returns to the station once again and this time, he finds her. He then realizes that she may be an artist as well and may have gone through the same processes to find each other.
b. My 2nd idea is that he may have drawn her as well as the other drawings in his book subconsciously and realized this was a woman he had to meet. He then returns to the train station, which is the setting of his drawing. When she doesn’t come, he hops on the train and then goes in search for the woman that he loves. When he doesn’t find her he returns back to the station and that is where he finally sees her. They go towards each other and hold hands, seeming like they both went through the same measures to find each other.
I think the way the film makers used photography and film made this a very interesting form of media. Everything looked cartooned and real at the same time. The train station and the train themselves looked like they were made out of wooden toys and the people all looked like cut outs that were animated to look like they were moving, inside of their cut out frames. This was a well done film and they filmmakers did a wonderful job. I must say it sure caught my attention.

"A Maiden in Born"
My color is milky white and thus a maiden is born... I was created by the great sculptural artist Ernst Wenck in 1901. He created my soft white body by using his strong meticulous hands. He is indeed an artist. I was created in a time when conservatism was not very popular. Because of my intricate detail and the delicate image I carry I became a model for porcelain miniatures.
If you study my structure you see the qualities that may have lead to my continued popularity. I lean forward and you see the muscle tone of my leg by the light tha ...

2. Assemblage
Pronounced {a-SAM-blaj}
Assemblage is an artistic process in which a
three-dimensional object has been transformed
into a work of art through the use of both
traditional and non-traditional techniques.
Doesn’t require traditional fine art skills such as
drawing, painting or sculpting but if you have
those skills it can be utilized and add your own
unique touch!
3. Model Examples
In the following slides, you’ll see many
approaches to this art form. You should
not try to copy any one assemblage, but
by all means allow them to inspire your
own vision.
As slides are shown, take note of the
materials used and write down at least
three different kinds of materials you can
identify from each.
4. Materials?
Take notes outlining the kind of objects
you see.
As you write, put stars next to objects you
think you might be able to collect and use
in your own piece…

Leviathan: is a sea monster referred to
in the Tanakh and the Bible. In
Demonology, Leviathan is one of the
seven princes of Hell and its gatekeeper
(see Hellmouth). The word leviathan
has become synonymous with any large
sea monster or creature.
9. In Islamic traditions, it is
said that four angels were
sent to gather dust from the
four corners of the world,
but only Israfel succeeded;
it was from this dust that
Adam was
created. According to
legend he waits century
after century prepared to
blow his trumpet to
announce the Last
Judgment. -Michael

an idea for a piece. Ideas
come from materials,
photos, music, drawings,
conversations, deadlines,
dreams, found objects,
nature, writing, accidents,
traveling or just playing

17. Becki Smith
At the heart of my activity as an assemblage artist is the appeal of
recycling things to inspire new insights, reflecting the alchemy that
occurs as spirituality and humor are invoked and combined with
different words, choices and perspectives. What I find appealing
about using a mixed media palette are the infinite possibilities for
expression and combination. Based on observation & reflection, I
meticulously compose three dimensional commentaries on human
nature, examining stereotypes, gender roles, quotes and clichés. My
own values and beliefs distill and clarify during the process. Healing
is a theme I return to again and again. Other themes that recur and
overlap throughout my work are values, choices, spirituality,
relationships, politics, the environment, domesticity, sexuality and
humor. My visual language has evolved as marks and objects are
used in many ways: functionally, decoratively and symbolically

Frozen
“Frozen" The idea behind this piece is
the occasional desire to sometimes
freeze time and hold your children in
one special moment... The
photographs I used in this piece were
taken last spring on a particularly nice
NE day... It was one of those
aforementioned days. ♥ To represent
Ryan and Kayleigh, I used both
photographic representations and
antique dolls to which I applied metallic
paint and a patina, turning them into
"monuments".
