Charley Harper was a wildlife artist born in 1922 in West Virginia. He studied art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he met his future wife Edie. Harper taught at the Art Academy and also worked for commercial firms. He illustrated books and magazines and created prints focused on natural subjects like birds. Harper developed an appreciation for nature and animals growing up on a farm in West Virginia. He moved away from realism in his work to focus on flat, simple designs that emphasized shapes and patterns over realistic details.
