5. INTRODUCTION :
Communication is a powerful way of conveying someone’s
feelings, opinions .
This relationship is based on trust, respect, empathy and
professional intimacy and requires appropriate use of the
power inherent in the care provider's role.
6. DEFINITION :
In the view of Hildegard Peplau, nursing should be considered
as a “significant, therapeutic, interpersonal process"
She defines that process as a “Human relationship between
an individual who is sick or in need of health services and a
nurse specially educated to recognize and to respond to the
need for help”
7. COMPONENTS:
There are five components to the nurse-client relationship-trust, respect,
professional intimacy, empathy and power.
Trust :- Trust has to be established in the nurse-patient relationship by
keeping promises and maintaining confidentiality.
Respect Respect is the recognition of the inherent dignity and
uniqueness of every individual, regardless of socioeconomic status,
personal attributes and nature of the problem.
8. Professional intimacy:-This component integrates itself in the type of care
and services that nurses provide. It may relate to physical activities of
carrying out nursing procedures or it may also involve psychological,
spiritual and social elements that are identified in the plan of care.
Empathy:- Empathy is the expression of understanding, validating and
resonating with the meaning that holds for the client.
Power :- The power inequality exists between the nurse and the patient
in the nurse-patient relationship.
