Philosophical Foundations of Compassionate Nursing Care

My Personal Nursing Philosophy
My nursing philosophy is characterized by doing the act of nursing towards my patients
through providing care with compassion. These guiding principles/ personal philosophy are
products of my interactions with patients, their families and other health care professionals.
Through my philosophy in nursing, it affects the choices and decisions I make towards giving
the required nursing procedures and care to my patients. For 8 years of being a nurse, I was
able to realize that God made me a nurse with a purpose and not just merely reaching my own
dreams literally but to touch people’s lives in my own act of kindness most especially during the
times that they are sick and hopeless in the health care setting.
When I was a student we are oriented that nursing is a caring profession and can be
described as both heart and mind. For me, all knowledge and learnings regarding the ideal
patient medical interventions would be useless if we do not respect human dignity. Also, as a
nurse I must be a compassionate/empathetic enough to the suffering or present health
problem of the patient. When we show empathy, we can nurture a collaborative relationship
with our patients and it can help us to gather necessary information needed for their care like
the causes and explanations that would contribute in determining the right diagnosis of their
condition and the most effective treatment they require. Compassionate care makes patients
more comfortable with us. Still, it is from the care we provide that we can help the patients
recover from their present illnesses. Correspondingly, our expertise along with our passion and
strength must go hand in hand for the sake of our patients because our ultimate goal is the
safety of our patients. In addition, I always think of the golden rule” Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you”, I always sympathize with my patients and put their shoes on
mine so that I could understand their feelings. So, whenever I think I am a patient, I always
want to be treated with care and compassion since no one would love and like to cooperate
with a health care provider having negative attitudes because they can have a significant
negative impact on the patient's care.
Meanwhile, the progressing role of professional nurses is knotted with technology. Even
if technology is important to nursing, nurses must still provide care with compassion to the
patients because it will serve as the guiding principle of the profession. In spite of what type of
healthcare setting they work in, or what type of role they practice, among health care workers,
nurses have the most interaction with patients. Some of the few roles they play include patient
supporter, educator, supervisor, and leader. Specifically, providing support is often term to be
activity provided within the context of nurse-patient relationship. It is the role of the nurse to
support the patient and represent the patients best interests at all times, especially when
treatment decisions are being made (Smith, 2019).On the other hand, nurse promote
professional role development and growth from nursing novice to expert, help mitigate errors,
simplify processes, and identify opportunities to improve processes and mitigate risks to the
patient, nurse, and hospital (Walsh University, 2019).In contrast to, a nurse supervisor is
responsible for managing staff, overseeing patient care and ensuring adherence to
established policies and procedures (Thomson, 2020).Finally, nurse leader will incorporate a

healthy balance of managing people and processes into their daily routines by ensuring staff is
recognized for quality improvements, that feedback is encouraged to promote continued
success in improving patient care, and a physical presence is maintained to show support and
appreciation (Sadler & Vaughn, 2020).
Along with my personal nursing philosophy characterizes the discipline of nursing using
the four metaparadigms: nursing, person, environment, health and. First, I believe nursing is
the act of providing holistic care and compassion to the patients. It’s more than just
administering medication, performing nurse’s notes, doing different nursing procedures and
completing the task of the entire shift. For me nursing care not only caters the physical aspect
or need of the patients but also socially, mentally and spiritually. This makes a difference in the
patient’s recovery. Secondly, a person/human being is the core receiver of holistic nursing care.
I believe that a nurse must see the person beyond his physical aspect and considers the
spiritual, mental and social needs as well. Also, a person must be viewed as the most valuable
being, to be respected, understood, and cared regarding their health. Thirdly, the environment
is considered as the setting or atmosphere that affects the patient. According to the
environmental theory of Florence nightingale that the goal of nursing is “to put the patient in
the best condition for nature to act upon him” (Gonzalo, 2019). Thus, we must make the
patient’s environment a safe place to contribute to recovery from the health condition because
the environment plays a very significant role in maintaining health and recovery from illness.
Lastly, I consider health as the extent of wellness the person currently has which is synonymous
with the quality of life of a person. Nurses play vital role in reaching the optimum level of health
or the quality of life every person desires through acting the nursing care bounded by own
philosophy and by taking a sense of responsibility because nursing is a profession which deals
with life. Nurses should play or act the different nurse’s roles ideal for the current health
situation a person and family encounters.
Therefore, each nurse should have their own nursing philosophy because it helps us to
think more critically and reflect how our practice is influenced by our own values. A better and
positive understanding of the importance of our philosophy is essential to our professional
practice. More so, it gives us the direction of the discipline and makes every nursing act
meaningful and beneficial not only to our patients but also within ourselves wherein we can
feel the sense of satisfaction.
