INTERNSHIP REPORT

Introduction
VE Commercial Vehicles Limited is a joint venture between the Volvo Group (Volvo)
and Eicher Motors Limited (EML), headquartered at New Delhi since July 2008. It is
a partnership that brings together global leadership in technology, quality, safety,
and environmental care, and aims at driving modernization in the commercial
transportation, both in India as well as other developing markets.
The first Eicher truck was rolled out from its manufacturing plant at Pithampur,
Madhya Pradesh in 1986, and after completing 33 years of operations in June 2019,
the products have got endorsement from happy customers of over 7,41,786 vehicles.
Eicher’s 12-69 seater buses have a growing presence in the LMD school bus, staff
and route-permit segments. ETB has also made strong inroads into heavy-duty trucks
segment of 16T-49T with their "VE" series of Fuel-Efficient heavy-duty trucks, and
the next generation Eicher Pro Series of heavy-duty trucks.
SHOP FEATURE
 MACHINE SHOP
• Overall capacity to manufacture 80000 sets of cylinder block €
head per annum
• Machine shop is compatible to produce 2/4 Valve and 4/6
cylinder variants.
• Key machining operations are done with 4 axis horizontal
machining centres,
special purpose machines volve seat guide machine, Cam bore,
Crank bore, Piston bore € joint face finish machine.
• Robotic high pressure washing machine for cylinder block
cleaning.
• New dry type leak testing machine to ensure leak free
components.
 ENGINE ASSEMBLY SHOP
• Overall capacity to manufacture 100000 engine per annum. (
Include 2/4 Valve and 4/6 cylinder engine for auto and non auto
applications ).
• Engine line capability to assemble engines for BS-II/ BS-III/
BSIV-CRDi/ BS-VI/ CNG.
• 100% engine are passed through hot test.
• All critical fastening torque are ensure through DC nut runners.
• Key in process verification( IPV )- leak testing, torque to turn,
valve oscillation etc.
• Engine assembly is done on the combination of powerised and
slat conveyor to take care of multi models.
 CABIN WELDING SHOP
• Overall capacity to produce 100000 cabinet per annum for both
legacy and new cabin.
• 22 + high tech robots and integrated transformer guns are used
in Welding cabin to ensure all critical weld joineries to maintain
overall spot quality.
• Main farmer concept used for maintaining overall cab accuracy.
• Door assembly and fornt lid hemming is done by robotised roller
hemming.
• All key assemblies are handled through grippers.
• Cabin handling is done through - automated conveyor, storage
and supply of cabin to paint shop by automated retrieval and
storage system.
 PAINT SHOP
• State of the art CED paint shop with capacity to paint 72000
cabin per annum,
expandable to 100000 per annum.
• For better cabin corrosion protection and enhanced cabin life
through Ro-Dip Electro-Dip mechanism.
• World's best paint technology used at a very optimal cost with
Volvo's expert supports.
• Cabin exterior painting by robots and banking with energy
efficient ovens.
• Lead free, water based paint, eco-techanology.
• 100% in process quality check and controlled E-mos system.
• Cabin handling
 DRIVE AXELASSEMBLY
• Overall capacity to manufacture 100000 per annum (to cater all
variants –LMD/HD/MAV/NON-AUTO).
• All critical fastening torques are ensured through dc nut runners.
• Key is process verification (IPV)- shim selection, end- play check
etc.
• Axel assembly is done on fully automatic “Toe chain with bottom
trolley return” system.
 CABIN TRIM SHOP
• Overall capacity to manufacture 100000 cabins per annum .
(both legacy and new cabin in LMD & HD segments ).
• State of the art cabin trim line conveyorised assembly of cabin by
taking care of efficient ergonomics.
• In process verification through key electrical checks and vehicles
ECU flashing.
• Key torque tightening with use of battery operated tools,
assembly and handling of cockpit through ergo device.
• Ensured 100% fit finish and gaps through quality gates.
• Supply of trimmed cabins to chassis line by overhead
conveyorised system.
VEHICLE ASSEMBLY
• Separate chassis lines of LMD with capacity of 60000
vehicles and HD with
capacity of 40000 vehicles per annum.
• Each line has a preparatory and final assembly
• Key torque tightening is ensured with DC nut runners –
U-bolt, wheel nut etc.
• All key aggregates are supplied through overhead
conveyorised system and AGV(
Automated Guided Vehicles).
• 100% functional, routing , clamping and leakage checking
as ensured through
quality gates.
• 100% verification of vehicles are checked dynamically at
end of line
tester(EOLT) and all key alignment through truck cam
machine before delivery to
customer.
• Quality verification is done at FVI & CSVES.

Good service and customer satisfaction are very important for companies for both
small and big companies, but especially so for small companies. Today competition
between companies is growing all the time and that is why good service is becoming
more and more important.

CONCLUSION
On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have
gained new knowledge, skills and met many new people. I achieved
several of my learning goals, however for some the conditions did
not permit. I got insight into professional practice. I learned the
different facets of working within a automotive company. The
internship was also good to find out what my strengths and
weaknesses are. This helped me to define what skills and knowledge
I have to improve in the coming time. It would be better that the
knowledge level of the language is sufficient to contribute fully to
projects. After my master I think that I could start my working
career. However I could perform certain tasks in research better if I
practice/know more the research methodologies applied in
cetacean studies. It would also be better if I can present and
express myself more confidently.

Internship report

  • 2. Introduction VE Commercial Vehicles Limited is a joint venture between the Volvo Group (Volvo) and Eicher Motors Limited (EML), headquartered at New Delhi since July 2008. It is a partnership that brings together global leadership in technology, quality, safety, and environmental care, and aims at driving modernization in the commercial transportation, both in India as well as other developing markets. The first Eicher truck was rolled out from its manufacturing plant at Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh in 1986, and after completing 33 years of operations in June 2019, the products have got endorsement from happy customers of over 7,41,786 vehicles. Eicher’s 12-69 seater buses have a growing presence in the LMD school bus, staff and route-permit segments. ETB has also made strong inroads into heavy-duty trucks segment of 16T-49T with their "VE" series of Fuel-Efficient heavy-duty trucks, and the next generation Eicher Pro Series of heavy-duty trucks.
  • 3. SHOP FEATURE  MACHINE SHOP • Overall capacity to manufacture 80000 sets of cylinder block € head per annum • Machine shop is compatible to produce 2/4 Valve and 4/6 cylinder variants. • Key machining operations are done with 4 axis horizontal machining centres, special purpose machines volve seat guide machine, Cam bore, Crank bore, Piston bore € joint face finish machine. • Robotic high pressure washing machine for cylinder block cleaning. • New dry type leak testing machine to ensure leak free components.  ENGINE ASSEMBLY SHOP • Overall capacity to manufacture 100000 engine per annum. ( Include 2/4 Valve and 4/6 cylinder engine for auto and non auto applications ). • Engine line capability to assemble engines for BS-II/ BS-III/ BSIV-CRDi/ BS-VI/ CNG. • 100% engine are passed through hot test. • All critical fastening torque are ensure through DC nut runners. • Key in process verification( IPV )- leak testing, torque to turn, valve oscillation etc. • Engine assembly is done on the combination of powerised and slat conveyor to take care of multi models.
  • 4.  CABIN WELDING SHOP • Overall capacity to produce 100000 cabinet per annum for both legacy and new cabin. • 22 + high tech robots and integrated transformer guns are used in Welding cabin to ensure all critical weld joineries to maintain overall spot quality. • Main farmer concept used for maintaining overall cab accuracy. • Door assembly and fornt lid hemming is done by robotised roller hemming. • All key assemblies are handled through grippers. • Cabin handling is done through - automated conveyor, storage and supply of cabin to paint shop by automated retrieval and storage system.  PAINT SHOP • State of the art CED paint shop with capacity to paint 72000 cabin per annum, expandable to 100000 per annum. • For better cabin corrosion protection and enhanced cabin life through Ro-Dip Electro-Dip mechanism. • World's best paint technology used at a very optimal cost with Volvo's expert supports. • Cabin exterior painting by robots and banking with energy efficient ovens. • Lead free, water based paint, eco-techanology. • 100% in process quality check and controlled E-mos system. • Cabin handling
  • 5.  DRIVE AXELASSEMBLY • Overall capacity to manufacture 100000 per annum (to cater all variants –LMD/HD/MAV/NON-AUTO). • All critical fastening torques are ensured through dc nut runners. • Key is process verification (IPV)- shim selection, end- play check etc. • Axel assembly is done on fully automatic “Toe chain with bottom trolley return” system.  CABIN TRIM SHOP • Overall capacity to manufacture 100000 cabins per annum . (both legacy and new cabin in LMD & HD segments ). • State of the art cabin trim line conveyorised assembly of cabin by taking care of efficient ergonomics. • In process verification through key electrical checks and vehicles ECU flashing. • Key torque tightening with use of battery operated tools, assembly and handling of cockpit through ergo device. • Ensured 100% fit finish and gaps through quality gates. • Supply of trimmed cabins to chassis line by overhead conveyorised system.
  • 6. VEHICLE ASSEMBLY • Separate chassis lines of LMD with capacity of 60000 vehicles and HD with capacity of 40000 vehicles per annum. • Each line has a preparatory and final assembly • Key torque tightening is ensured with DC nut runners – U-bolt, wheel nut etc. • All key aggregates are supplied through overhead conveyorised system and AGV( Automated Guided Vehicles). • 100% functional, routing , clamping and leakage checking as ensured through quality gates. • 100% verification of vehicles are checked dynamically at end of line tester(EOLT) and all key alignment through truck cam machine before delivery to customer. • Quality verification is done at FVI & CSVES.
  • 7. INTERNSHIP PROGRAM QAG & CUSTOMER SATISFACTION Good service and customer satisfaction are very important for companies for both small and big companies, but especially so for small companies. Today competition between companies is growing all the time and that is why good service is becoming more and more important.
  • 8. QAG PROCESS  FIELD INVESTIGATION REPORT ( FIR )  Uptime = Q&CS  Q&CS = DECISION FOR PART REQUIREMENT & ENTERING SOLUTIONS  ISSUE SHARE WITH CONCERNS AGENCY  ANALYSIS OF ISSUES  SOLUTION VALIDATION, IF DESIGN ISSUES  END TO END RESOLUTION WITHIN 60 DAYS FOR DESIGN/ 25 DAYS FOR PART & PROCESS ISSUE  CAMPAIGN DECISION BASED ON NATURE OF COMPLAINTS  ISSUE CLOSED WITH CUT OF CHASSIS FOR MONITORING

  • 10. CONCLUSION On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have gained new knowledge, skills and met many new people. I achieved several of my learning goals, however for some the conditions did not permit. I got insight into professional practice. I learned the different facets of working within a automotive company. The internship was also good to find out what my strengths and weaknesses are. This helped me to define what skills and knowledge I have to improve in the coming time. It would be better that the knowledge level of the language is sufficient to contribute fully to projects. After my master I think that I could start my working career. However I could perform certain tasks in research better if I practice/know more the research methodologies applied in cetacean studies. It would also be better if I can present and express myself more confidently.
