Internet of Things (IoT) - We Are at the Tip of An IcebergDr. Mazlan Abbas
You are likely benefitting from The Internet of Things (IoT) today, whether or not you’re familiar with the term. If your phone automatically connects to your car radio, or if you have a smartwatch counting your steps, congratulations! You have adopted one small piece of a very large IoT pie, even if you haven't adopted the name yet.
IoT may sound like a business buzzword, but in reality, it’s a real technological revolution that will impact everything we do. It's the next IT Tsunami of new possibility that is destined to change the face of technology, as we know it. IoT is the interconnectivity between things using wireless communication technology (each with their own unique identifiers) to connect objects, locations, animals, or people to the Internet, thus allowing for the direct transmission of and seamless sharing of data.
IoT represents a massive wave of technical innovation. Highly valuable companies will be built and new ecosystems will emerge from bridging the offline world with the online into one gigantic new network. Our limited understanding of the possibilities hinders our ability to see future applications for any new technology. Mainstream adoption of desktop computers and the Internet didn’t take hold until they became affordable and usable. When that occurred, fantastic and creative new innovation ensued. We are on the cusp of that tipping point with the Internet of Things.
IoT matters because it will create new industries, new companies, new jobs, and new economic growth. It will transform existing segments of our economy: retail, farming, industrial, logistics, cities, and the environment. It will turn your smartphone into the command center for the both digital and physical objects in your life. You will live and work smarter, not harder – and what we are seeing now is only the tip of the iceberg.
Internet of Things (IOT) in simple terms we can describe the iot with a definition it is "A virtual world with a physical touch" it is connected with every thing that are related to the magnetic waves.
It is a new innovation in the era of technology that can change the face of technology and even we can see the change around us.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

3. Internet of Things
INERTNET THINGS
IT IS NETWORK OF NETWORK,IT IS A
MEDIUM THROUGH WHICH DEVICE IS
CONNECT.
IT IS ANY OBJECT WITH INTELLIGENCE TO
CONNECT WITH THE INTERNET. HERE,
OBJECT REFERS TO AN Y OBJECT
EMBEDDED WITH SOFTWARE OR
ELECTRONICS.
EXAMPLE: AIR CONDITIONER,COFFEE
MACHINE ,CAR etc.
4. What is IoT?
The era of the Internet of things (IoT) began to develop rapidly in 2008-2009 when the number of
devices connected to the Internet exceeded the world’s population. Although the first attempts to
define the concept of the Internet of things was developed 10 years earlier - in 1999, its well-
known content (household appliances and surrounding things, combined into a single network)
was formulated in 2004.
The Internet of things is a platform where regular devices are connected through the internet, so
they can interact, collaborate and exchange data with each other.
The concept behind IoT is about connecting just about everything in Internet in real-time which
directly improves our quality of life and experience.
5. NEED FOR IoT
Without IoT we have to run from machine to machine to telling them what to do for you.
With IoT device can INTERACT- COLLABORATE- SHARE EXPERIENCES; just like we humans
do.
It aims to reduce human intervention in a machine cycle. The machine here are in
continuous touch with each other and could be pre-instructed on what to do and when to
do it. This machine can adjust to our need modify how they function.
Example:In morning when your alarm goes off,
Iot system can open the window blinds
turn on the coffee pot and even turn on the water heater.
6. HOW INTERNET OF THINGS WORK?
Although all of this is fascinating , there’s a lot that goes on in the background to ensure
seamless functioning. From effective communication between devices to accurate processing of
data received. A lot of components are involved.
7. IOT DEVICES
General Devices
These are the main components of data hub
and information exchange. They are connected
by either wire or wireless interfaces.
Example: Home appliances such as AC, T.V. etc.
Sensing devices
It include sensors and actuators. They measure the
temperature, humidity, light intensity and other
parameters.
These IOT devices are connected to the network with the help of gateways. These gateways (processing
nodes) process the information collected from the sensors and transfer it to cloud.
Cloud act as both storage and processing unit, action are performed on collected data for further learning and
inferences.
Wire and wireless interferences (WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee and GSM) are used to provide connectivity to ensure
ubiquity.
9. INTERNET OF THINGS APPLICATIONS
1. IOT IN SMART HOMES
2. IOT IN HEALTH CARE
3. IOT IN SMARTCITIES
4. IOT IN AGRICULTURE
5. IOT IN INDUTRIAL
AUTOMATION
10. IOT IN SMART HOMES
The IoT based home automation consist of several smart devices for different
applications of lighting, security, home entertainment etc. All these devices are
integrated over a common network established by gateway and connected in a
mesh network. This means that it gives users the flexibility to operate one sensor
based followed by the action of the other. For e.g. you can schedule to trigger the
living room lights as soon as the door/windows sensor of your main door triggers
after 7pm in the evening.
11. IOT IN HEALTH CARE
IoT applications can turn reactive medical-based systems into proactive wellness-
based systems.
The resources that current medical research uses, lack critical real-world
information. It mostly uses leftover data, controlled environments, and volunteers
for medical examination. IoT opens ways to a sea of valuable data through analysis,
real-time field data, and testing.
Here’s how an IoT-enabled care device works.
12. IOT IN SMARTCITIES
The thing about the smart city concept is that it’s very specific to a city. The
problems faced in Mumbai are very different than those in Delhi. The problems in
Hong Kong are different from New York. Even global issues, like finite clean drinking
water, deteriorating air quality and increasing urban density, occur in different
intensities across cities. Hence, they affect each city differently.
Imagine an intelligent device such as a traffic camera. The camera can monitor the
streets for traffic congestion, accidents, weather conditions, and communicate this
data to a common gateway. This gateway also receives data from other such
cameras and relays the information further to a city-wide traffic monitoring system.
13. IOT IN AGRICULTURE
Statistics estimate the ever-growing world population to reach nearly 10 billion by the year
2050. To feed such a massive population one needs to marry agriculture to technology and
obtain best results. There are numerous possibilities in this field. One of them is the Smart
Greenhouse.
A greenhouse farming technique enhances the yield of crops by controlling environmental
parameters. However, manual handling results in production loss, energy loss, and labor cost,
making the process less effective.
A greenhouse with embedded devices not only makes it easier to be monitored but also,
enables us to control the climate inside it. Sensors measure different parameters according
to the plant requirement and send it to the cloud. It, then, processes the data and applies a
control action.
14. IOT IN INDUTRIAL AUTOMATION
This is one of the fields where both faster developments, as well as the quality of
products, are the critical factors for a higher Return on Investment. With IoT
Applications, one could even re-engineer products and their packaging to deliver better
performance in both cost and customer experience. IoT here can prove to be game
changing with solutions for all the following domains in its arsenal.
Factory Digitalization
Product flow Monitoring
Inventory Management
Safety and Security
Quality Control
Packaging optimization
Logistics and Supply Chain Optimization
16. Benefits of IoT in Business
•Understanding Customers
Many companies create products based on connected
technologies that directly link them to the behavior and
preferences of their customers. For example, Fitbit knows
our sleep mode and the number of hours of training. and
Rolls Royce is aware of how airlines use its jet engines.
Even those companies that do not produce these devices
can get data about users through IoT applications
installed on their tablet PCs and smartphones, and then
apply them to improve the efficiency of their business.
17. Benefits of IoT in Business
•Increase Business Profitability
As you know, information is the main resource of our
time. So the data generated by smart gadgets is of great
value for the business. In addition to direct income, the
data and the ability of the company to use them is one
of the most important assets of modern enterprises.
•Optimization of Production
Data from IoT-devices can improve the methods of company
management, automate production and improve the
efficiency of internal processes.
The service for carrying passengers, Uber with the help of
the applications for smartphones, has developed an
algorithm for monitoring traffic on the road in real time.
18. Scope of IOt
In just 1-year internet connected devices went
from 5 million to billions. Business Insider
Intelligence estimates that 24 billion IoT devices
would be installed by the year 2020, generating a
revenue of over 300 billion.
IoT iterates, improves and keeps building. Its
networks don’t arrive pre-assembled, they grow
over time. The Internet of Things (IoT) has
amalgamated hardware and software to the
internet to create a smarter world. It has been
growing at a significant pace and offers a
multitude of opportunities for government and
business. In fact, the number of openings for IoT
professionals is at an all-time high.
19. Challenges and Criticism
•As the number of connected devices increases and more information is
shared between devices, the potential that a hacker could steal
confidential information also increases.
•Enterprises may eventually have to deal with massive numbers -- maybe
even millions -- of IoT devices, and collecting and managing the data from
all those devices will be challenging.
•If there's a bug in the system, it's likely that every connected device will
become corrupted.
•Since there's no international standard of compatibility for IoT, it's difficult
for devices from different manufacturers to communicate with each other.
20. Conclusion
When we look at today’s state of technologies, we get a clear indication of
how IoT will be implemented on a global level in near future. Use of the
internet is increasing day-by-day. Commute and connectivity became easier
in the present scenario. In near future, the number of internet connected
devices would increase exponentially.
Although there are some issues in IoT. These issues can be removed in near
future. With such a rapid growth, the day is not too far that we can decide
our dinner even before reaching home on the way.
