This document summarizes a research paper that proposes a new method for diffeomorphic MRI brain registration using mean-shift algorithm. The method uses multiple brain structure segmentations derived from Freesurfer, in addition to MRI intensities, to drive a diffeomorphic registration algorithm. This provides anatomically guided registration that can more accurately align individual brain structures across images. The paper also describes extending the registration to a groupwise framework to build an average atlas without choosing a single template image. Evaluation of the registration for tasks like tensor-based morphometry is also discussed.
