Abstract: Intel® QuickAssist Technology improves performance and efficiency across the data center and other computing platforms by handling the compute-intensive operations of bulk cryptography, public key cryptography, and data compression. In this course, we will give an overview of the technology along with the summary of resources to get started with integrating Intel® QAT into your platform solutions. We will also demonstrate using Intel® QAT with applications such as OpenSSL, NGINX, and HAProxy, with a hands-on lab.

Joel Auernheimer, a Platform Application Engineer at Intel, has been focused on enabling customers to integrate Intel® QuickAssist Technology in their platform solutions. Joel is a native of Phoenix, Arizona and enjoys hiking, basketball, soccer, singing, and spending time with friends and family.

Segment Routing over IPv6 (SRv6) is an architecture based on the source routing paradigm that seeks the right balance between distributed (network-wide) intelligence and centralized (controller-based) programmability. Using SRv6, network devices have complete control over the forwarding paths and the network functions to be applied to packets, by combining simple network instructions. Moreover, applications can become SRv6 aware and gain control over the network-wide forwarding and processing of packets. SRv6 technology has been implemented in hardware by different vendors (e.g. CISCO, Huawei, Barefoot), in software (e.g. Linux kernel networking) and in software with I/O acceleration (e.g. FD.io Vector Packet Processing using DPDK). Several large scale deployments of SRv6 have been rolled out in 2019 (including Softbank, Iliad, ChinaTelecom, China Unicom), see https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-matsushima-spring-srv6-deployment-status. This tutorial will provide a quick introduction to SRv6 architecture and protocols and will illustrate the design and implementation of SRv6 services with hands-on examples. The first step to solving this problem is lowering the cost of access. Sequitur Labs and Linaro have joined forces to address this problem by making a port of OP-TEE available on the Raspberry Pi 3. The presentation covers the value of TrustZone for securing IoT and how customers can learn more through this joint effort.
Embedded systems security remains a challenge for many developers. Awareness of mature, proven technologies such as ARM TrustZone is very low among the Maker community as well as among enterprises. As a result this foundational technology is largely being ignored as a security solution. Sequitur Labs and Linaro have taken an innovative approach combining an Open Source solution – OP-TEE with Raspberry Pi 3. The Raspberry Pi 3 is one of the world’s most popular platforms among device makers. Its value as an educational tool for learning about embedded systems development is proven.
Sequitur Labs have also enabled bare metal debugging via JTag on the Pi 3 enhancing the value of the Pi 3 as an educational tool for embedded systems development.

This presentation introduces Data Plane Development Kit overview and basics. It is a part of a Network Programming Series.
First, the presentation focuses on the network performance challenges on the modern systems by comparing modern CPUs with modern 10 Gbps ethernet links. Then it touches memory hierarchy and kernel bottlenecks.
The following part explains the main DPDK techniques, like polling, bursts, hugepages and multicore processing.
DPDK overview explains how is the DPDK application is being initialized and run, touches lockless queues (rte_ring), memory pools (rte_mempool), memory buffers (rte_mbuf), hashes (rte_hash), cuckoo hashing, longest prefix match library (rte_lpm), poll mode drivers (PMDs) and kernel NIC interface (KNI).
At the end, there are few DPDK performance tips.

Static partitioning is becoming increasingly common in embedded. A static hypervisor, such as Xen dom0less, is employed to split the hardware resources into multiple domains and run a different OS in each domain. For instance, Linux and Zephyr. Only the simplest static partitioning configurations don't involve any data exchanges between the domains. Often, communication and data exchanges between two or more environments are required to complete the data processing pipeline that implements the target application. However, the VM-to-VM communication mechanisms available in static partitioning configurations are typically more limited compared to general-purpose hypervisors. For example, PV drivers are not available to Xen dom0less domains. This presentation will discuss the need for communication in static partitioning setups and it will present the technical challenges involved in getting traditional communication methods to work, including Xen PV drivers and VirtIO. The talk will also provide simpler alternatives based on shared memory and interrupt notifications to set up domain-to-domain data streams: simpler techniques that are easily exploitable both by Linux and by tiny baremetal applications as well.
TRex is an open source, low cost, stateful traffic generator fuelled by DPDK. It generates L4-7 traffic based on pre-processing and a smart replay of real traffic templates. TRex amplifies both client and server side traffic and can scale to 200Gb/sec with one UCS.

Missing communication security is a common vulnerability in Internet of Things deployments. Addressing this vulnerability is, in theory, relatively easy: with TLS and DTLS, two widely used security protocols are available. They are used to secure web and smart phone apps.
In this talk Hannes Tschofenig explains how the TLS/DTLS 1.3 protocols work and how they differ from previous versions. Hannes also speaks about the performance improvements and how they help in IoT deployments.
Static Partitioning with Xen, LinuxRT, and Zephyr: A Concrete End-to-end Exam...Stefano Stabellini
Static partitioning enables multiple domains to run alongside each other with no interference. They could be running Linux, an RTOS, or another OS, and all of them have direct access to different portions of the SoC. In the last five years, the Xen community introduced several new features to make Xen-based static partitioning possible. Dom0less to start multiple static domains in parallel at boot, and Cache Coloring to minimize cache interference effects are among them. Static inter-domain communications mechanisms were introduced this year, while "ImageBuilder" has been making system-wide configurations easier. An easy-to-use complete solution is within our grasp. This talk will show the progress made on Xen static partitioning. The audience will learn to configure a realistic reference design with multiple partitions: a LinuxRT partition, a Zephyr partition, and a larger Linux partition. The presentation will show how to set up communication channels and direct hardware access for the domains. It will explain how to measure interrupt latency and use cache coloring to zero cache interference effects. The talk will include a live demo of the reference design.

The concept of service mesh is one of the new technologies that have grown up around the container and micro-service model over the last couple of years, and Istio is the latest entry into this space. As Istio was recently included as an incubated project in the CNCF, many companies are now looking to it to provide a set of key functions to accelerate their micro-service application management model. Istio enables bi-directional authentication and security of service communication via TLS based authentication and encryption, and at the same time is able to capture application level communication statistics, improving the application development team's visibility into the otherwise difficult to track communication patterns. In this way, Istio acts like an application level network, riding across the underlying capabilities of Kubernetes CNI based networks and network policy. We will implement Istio on a GKE kubernetes cluster, and instrument a simple application to get better insight into how Istio provides its capabilities.

Abstract: Although new non-volatile media inherently offers very low latency, remote access
using protocols such as NVMe-oF and presenting the data to VMs via virtualized interfaces such as virtio
adds considerable software overhead. One way to reduce the overhead is to use the Storage
Performance Development Kit (SPDK), an open-source software project that provides building blocks for
scalable and efficient storage applications with breakthrough performance. Comparing the software
paths for virtualizing block storage I/O illustrates the advantages of the SPDK-based approach. Empirical
data shows that using SPDK can improve CPU efficiency by up to 10 x and reduce latency up to 50% over
existing methods. Future enhancements for SPDK will make its advantages even greater.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code AnalysisAftab Hussain
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?
