Architectures for Cyber-Physical Systems, or Why Ivan Doesn’t Want to GraduateIvan Ruchkin
A fresh multidisciplinary research and engineering area of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) lies on an intersection of more traditional fields, like mechanical and electrical engineering, and newer approaches from AI, ubiquitous computing, and software engineering. Although modeling is a core method in these areas, the concrete mindsets and methods for it are very diverse, which makes system-level reasoning across models more complicated. For instance, it is difficult to predict how smoothing a control algorithm represented in Simulink would affect schedulability guarantees provided by a rate-monotonic analysis model. Conveniently, software architecture is well-known for reconciling concerns by loosening up model semantics, which makes it a promising tool for model-based design of CPSs. This talk discusses several examples from the automotive and robotics domains to expose the challenges of using heterogeneous models and how software architecture might help alleviate those. All these considerations will be linked to the mysterious second part of the title.

Wireless Networked Control Systems (WNCSs) are spatially distributed systems in which sensors, actuators, and controllers connect through a wireless network instead of traditional point-to-point links. WNCSs have a tremendous potential to improve the efficiency of many large-scale distributed systems in industrial automation, building automation, automated highway, air transportation, and smart grid. Transmitting sensor measurements and control commands over wireless links provide many benefits such as the ease of installation and maintenance, low complexity and cost, and large flexibility to accommodate the modification and upgrade of the components in many control applications. Several industrial organizations, such as International Society of Automation (ISA), Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (HART), and Wireless In- dustrial Networking Alliance (WINA), have been actively pushing the application of wireless technologies in the control applications. Building a WNCS is very challenging since control systems often have stringent requirements on timing and reliability, which are difficult to attain by wireless sensor networks due to the adverse properties of the wireless communication and limited battery resources of the nodes. We provide a framework for the joint optimization of controller and communication systems encompassing efficient abstractions of both systems.

First Steps Toward Scientific Cyber-Security Experimentation in Wide-Area Cyb...DETER-Project
Abstract: Steps towards an environment for repeatable and scalable experiments on wide-area cyber-physical systems. The cyber-physical systems that underlie the world's critical infrastructure are increasingly vulnerable to attack and failure. Our work has focused on secure and resilient communication technology for the electric power grid, a subset of the general cyber-physical problem. We have demonstrated tools and methodology for experimentation with GridStat, a middleware system designed to provide enhanced communication service for the grid, within the DeterLab cyber-security testbed. Experiment design tools for DeterLab and for GridStat will ease the creation and execution of relatively large experiments, and they should make this environment accessible to users inexperienced with cluster testbeds. This abstract presents brief overviews of DeterLab and of GridStat and describes their integration. It also describes a large scale GridStat/DeterLab experiment.

Interference Revelation in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks and Confrontationirjes
In this paper, we utilize the Several interference revelation techniques proposed for mobile ad hoc
networks rely on each node passively monitoring the data forwarding by its next hop. This paper presents
quantitative evaluations of false positives and their impact on monitoring based interference revelation for ad
hoc networks. Experimental results show that, even for a simple three-node configuration, an actual ad-hoc
network suffers from high false positives; these results are validated by Markov and probabilistic models.
However, this false positive problem cannot be observed by simulating the same network using popular ad hoc
network simulators, such as ns-2, OPNET or Glomosim. To remedy this, a probabilistic noise generator model
is implemented in the Glomosim simulator. With this revised noise model, the simulated network exhibits the
aggregate false positive behavior similar to that of the experimental tested. Simulations of larger (50-node) ad
hoc networks indicate that monitoring-based interference revelation has very high false positives. These false
positives can reduce the network performance or increase the overhead. In a simple monitoring-based system
where no secondary and more accurate methods are used, the false positives impact the network performance in
two ways: reduced throughput in normal networks without attackers and inability to mitigate the effect of
attacks in networks with attackers.
Cyber-Defensive Architecture for Networked Industrial Control SystemsIJEACS
This paper deals with the inevitable consequence of the convenience and efficiency we benefit from the open, networked control system operation of safety-critical applications: vulnerability to such system from cyber-attacks. Even with numerous metrics and methods for intrusion detection and mitigation strategy, a complete detection and deterrence of internal code flaws and outside cyber-attacks has not been found and would not be found anytime soon. Considering the ever incompleteness of detection and prevention and the impact and consequence of mal-functions of the safety-critical operations caused by cyber incidents, this paper proposes a new computer control system architecture which assures resiliency even under compromised situations. The proposed architecture is centered on diversification of hardware systems and unidirectional communication from the proposed system in alerting suspicious activities to upper layers. This paper details the architectural structure of the proposed cyber defensive computer control system architecture for power substation applications and its validation in lab experimentation and on a cybersecurity testbed.

A Defense-in-depth Cybersecurity for Smart SubstationsIJECEIAES
The increase of cyber-attacks on industrial and power systems in the recent years make the cybersecurity of supervisory control and data acquisition and substation automation systemsa high important engineering issue. This paper proposes a defense in depth cybersecurity solution for smart substations in different layers of the substation automation system. In fact, it presents possible vulnerabilities in the substation automation system and propose a multiple layer solution based on best practice in cyber security such as the hardening ofdevices, whitelisting, network configuration, network segmentation, role-based account management and cyber security management and deployement.
In this paper, we examine WiMAX – based network and evaluate the performance for quality of service (QoS) using an idea of IEEE 802.16 technology. In our models, the study used a multiprocessor architecture organized by the interconnection network. OPNET Modeler is used to simulate the architecture and to calculate the performance criteria (i.e. throughput, delay and data dropped) that
slightly concerned in network estimation. It is concluded that our models shorten the time quite a bit for
obtaining the performance measures of an end-to-end delay as well as throughput can be used as an
effective tool for this purpose.

CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

Integrated Security Analysis on Cascading
Failure in Complex Networks
Abstract:
The security issue of complex networks has drawn significant concerns
recently. While pure topological analyzes from a network security perspective
provide some effective techniques, their inability to characterize the physical
principles requires a more comprehensive model to approximate failure behavior
of a complex network in reality. In this paper, based on an extended topological
metric, we proposed an approach to examine the vulnerability of a specific type of
complex network, i.e., the power system, against cascading failure threats. The
proposed approach adopts a model called extended between’s that combines
network structure with electrical characteristics to define the load of power grid
components. By using this power transfer distribution factor-based model, we
simulated attacks on different components (buses and branches) in the grid and
evaluated the vulnerability of the system components with an extended topological
cascading failure simulator. Influence of different loading and overloading
situations on cascading failures was also evaluated by testing different tolerance
factors. Finally, potential extensions of the approach were also discussed to exhibit
both utility and challenge in more complex scenarios and applications.

3. Existing System:
It is notable that the threat of cascading failures, which is usually
caused by extreme random events in the past, can be intensified by the
growing integration and utilization of computer-based control and
communication networks.
Increasing interconnection of local networks, growing communication
traffic and user demand, as well as diversifying services and emerging
new technologies, the complex systems are becoming increasingly
sophisticated to operate coordinately.
In power system, the power does not follow the geodesic shortest path
from a generation bus to a load bus.
4. Proposed System:
Secure a complex network system like power grid against cascading
failures has been motivating development of models and
methodologies to simulate potential selective attacks that result in
cascading failures in a power system with the consideration of specific
network physical properties.
Malicious attackers can take advantage of the potential open access
from smart meters in the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) to
plan the attack with intelligence collected from their penetration, so
that they can maximize the impact of their attacks.
