Insulin resistance occurs when the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, which is produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar levels. The pancreas produces insulin which is released into the bloodstream to travel throughout the body and perform important functions. Several factors can contribute to insulin resistance, including genetic components, certain medications, and conditions related to metabolic syndrome involving excess weight, high blood pressure, and abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
