Instructional Design
THE ADDIE MODEL versus THE DICK & CAREY MODEL
by: Chedville D Adams
Instructional Design
Instructional
Design is the
innovative use of
materials and
experiences which
allow for the
learning of certain
knowledge and
skills.
There are two
models which
support this; The
ADDIE MODEL and
THE DICK AND
CAREY MODEL

“As we can see
both models
basically offer the
same information
when it comes to
Instructional

Very Specific
Evaluation is at The
End
Evaluation is Two

the Model
“One of the main
differences
between the two
models is the
specifics in which
Dick and Carey
offer over The
Addie Model.
Also note the
different approach
in the evaluation
process”
Advantages and Disadvantages
The advantage to the
ADDIE model is it’s
simplicity and five
easy steps. The
disadvantage
however is it’s ability
to only evaluate once
throughout the
learning process.
• The advantage to
the Dick and Carey
Model is it’s
continuous
evaluation
procedure
throughout the
model. The
disadvantage I see
is it’s lengthy
procedure which
may seem complex
to some.
