THE ADDIE MODEL versus THE DICK & CAREY MODEL
by: Chedville D Adams
INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN
Instructional Design is the innovative use of materials and experiences which allow
for the learning of certain knowledge and skills.
There are two models which support this; The ADDIE MODEL and THE DICK AND CAREY
MODEL
THE ADDIE MODEL
THE DICK & CAREY MODEL
Similarities in
Models
THE ADDIE MODEL DICK AND CAREY MODEL
Analysis Conduct Instructional Analysis
Identify Entry Behaviors
Design Identify Instructional Goals and
Write Performance Objectives
Development Develop Instructional Strategy
Implementation Revise Instruction
Evaluation Summative Evaluation
Formative Evaluation
“As we can see both models basically offer the same information
when it comes to Instructional Design”
Differences in
Models
THE ADDIE MODEL DICK AND CAREY MODEL
Five (5) Steps Involved Ten (10 Steps Involved
Broad Spectrum in it’s Design Very Specific
Evaluation is at The End Evaluation is Two Fold and
throughout the Model
“One of the main differences between the two models is the specifics in which Dick
and Carey offer over The Addie Model.
Also note the different approach in the evaluation process”
Advantages and Disadvantages
ADDIE MODEL
The advantage to the
ADDIE model is it’s
simplicity and five easy
steps. The disadvantage
however is it’s ability to
only evaluate once
throughout the learning
process.
DICK AND CAREY MODEL
• The advantage to the
Dick and Carey Model
is it’s continuous
evaluation procedure
throughout the model.
The disadvantage I see
is it’s lengthy
procedure which may
appear complex to
some.
