The kidneys play a vital role in regulating fluid and electrolyte balance, filtering waste from the blood, producing hormones, and controlling blood pressure. When kidney function declines, waste builds up in the blood and patients may develop complications. Chronic kidney disease is staged based on glomerular filtration rate, with later stages characterized by increased waste levels, electrolyte imbalances, and other systemic effects. Treatment options for kidney failure include hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and transplantation. Hemodialysis involves filtering blood through a dialysis machine, while peritoneal dialysis uses the peritoneal membrane to filter waste from the blood. Both require dietary and medication modifications.

The Dr Richard Maponya Institute for Skills and Entrepreneurship Development was established in 2014 and is inspired by the Brazilian SENAI model. The Institute aims to (1) provide technical skills training, business administration skills, and entrepreneurship development, (2) contribute to reducing unemployment in South Africa, and (3) inculcate an entrepreneurship culture. It plans to achieve this through identifying and training potential entrepreneurs, providing skills development programs, and supporting entrepreneurs to access markets and opportunities. The Institute envisions partnering with other organizations and delivering certificate to post-graduate level programs to contribute to industrialization, global competitiveness, and local economic development in South Africa.
Dr Richard Maponya Institute for Skills and Entrepreneurship Development - NPCSam Tsima
The Institute is inspired by the Brazilian National Service for Industrial Apprenticeship, SENAI Institute, whose mission is “To promote vocational and technological education, the innovation and transfer of industrial technologies, contributing to increase the competitiveness of Brazilian industry.”
Dr Maponya was introduced to SENAI Institute during his business visit to Brazil, as a member of the delegation of the South African President, Hon. Jacob Zuma. He remained behind in Brazil, and was introduced to the SENAI Model.
This trip to Brazil and the discussions he held with the Brazilians gave birth to the idea of establishing the Dr Richard Maponya Institute for Skills and Entrepreneurship Development.
