This session will challenge participants to rethink the use of incentives and encourage them to look at ways to create the conditions for students to motivate themselves. The following will be discussed:
the long term issues that can be caused by incentives/rewards
ideas to create the conditions for long term (more intrinsic) motivation
how short term punishments can create further behaviour problems with students
how behaviour is often a result of an unmet need or lagging skill

Living near Railways: Discourses of Control, Choice and CompromiseJenna Condie
Presentation for Salford Postgraduate Annual Research Conference (SPARC) 2011.
Many people live near railways in the UK. Railways in residential environments have largely been researched in terms of the disturbance and annoyance they cause to residents, mainly vibration and noise. My research explores the wider context and residents experiences of living near railways.
The relationship between people and where they live is very complex. The places we live form part of who we are - our identity. Places say something about us therefore we have something to say about places and the things (e.g. railways) in them.
I have explored how people talk about living near railways, and how they position themselves as having choices and control over where they live, but also how living near the railway is a compromise: the compromise being living near a railway but finding a 'decent' and 'good' place to live.
LESSONS LEARNED FROM PAST NOTABLE DISASTERS: FLOODING. For centuries, china has enperienced record flooding associated with the rainey season or typhoons. Impacts of flooding in china during 2007: Floods alone killed more than 1,348 people in China during 2007. Economic losses from floods reached more than $10 billion USD. An estimated 139 million people were adversely affected by floods. As many as 2.7 million were evacuated in advance of a single potential flood event. Digital Ethnography For Social Interaction Design [Remix]Brynn Evans
I gave this talk at Bolt|Peters' User Research Friday. The talk covers the challenges for studying online communities, or what I refer to as "social interaction design". Social interaction design is relevant for anyone who is developing a social product. Whether for iPhone apps, Twitter knock-offs, recipe management software, online shopping services, or even Wrigley's gum, there are social motivators that drive many user behaviors. Unfortunately, it's not so easy to "shadow" someone’s day-to-day activities in a digital space like you can in a physical space, which is why needs-finding for social interaction design requires a new set of tools and methods. I'll talk about a few remote research tools that can be used to understand the design opportunities in social spaces.

As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
