This document describes the role of innovation as a key factor for cleaner production. It presents the case of Technical textiles and its role in reducing global pollution. The document was presented to a UN workshop organized in Damascus in Nov 2008
Mr Gurudas Aras, Director, A.T.E. Enterprises made a presentation on "Technological advancements in technical textiles" at the inaugural session of the Techtextil International Conference, Mumbai on 21 November 2019. The presentation mainly focused on the most relevant technological developments in technical textiles in the Indian context today and covered 'sustainability', 'durability', and 'functionality' aspects of the business. The presentation covered products like flushable and bio-degradable wipes, textile reinforced concrete, thermoplastic UD tapes for automobiles and coating and lamination for special applications respectively. Product success depends on a mix of user psychology, design creativity and engineering execution. Learn how technology entrepreneurs integrate these disparate areas to bring a desirable product to market. This presentation will explore the roles of consumer and designer, cover steps and strategies to create a holistic product experience and discuss the importance of prototyping correctly. Emphasis will be placed on identifying development gaps as well as practical approaches for product development teams. Lessons and examples of design and engineering in the product creation process will be covered.

18. Technical textiles innovations to reduce global pollution
- Case of 3D woven based composites in aerospace
Environmental Benefits of 3D woven based composites
Decrease the total mass of aerospace equipments and reduce fuel
consumption. Boeing 787 consumes 20% less fuel compared to other
airplanes of its category.
Reduce the energy needed to produce the airplane. Composites
manufacturing technologies versus metallic based technology
Reduce the amount of scrapped materials to make pieces in the case of
woven composites compared to metallic pieces which needs to be tooled.
Reduce the consumption of spare parts due to higher lifetime and higher wear
resistance.

19. Innovation Efforts of technical textile producers to obtain Eco labels
Technical textile industry has also its own ambitions to obtain Eco-
labels. Many development projects are initiated in this area:
- Develop new yarns using recyclable materials.
- Introduce new resins based on bio materials or with better
recyclability (at least better than Epoxy for composites).
- Increase the life time of fabrics and composites.
- Reduce the waste issued by the process by the introduction of new
control technology to reduce scrapping.

20. Conclusions
Obtaining Eco-labels is a vital issue for all industries today to meet
customer and society attempts
This trend is a real innovation motor for technical textiles sector:
- To introduce and to develop new technologies to get its own Eco labels
- To develop new products to help customers to obtain their own Eco
labels and to make environment friendly products.
- Technical textiles sector shows how Eco labeling is a real motor for
modern economies to create more values and to ensure sustainable
development
