FMP YEAR 1

INITIAL IDEAS
IDEA 1
My first idea is to create a gender fluid fashion magazine that is inspired heavily by vogue. It will feature a male
on the front cover dressed in clothing pieces such as; a skirt, flares, blouses, necklaces and earrings and other
things that are stereotypically worn by women. I will include a double page spread dedicated entirely to the
gender fluid fashion movement. In this double page spread there will be personal experiences from people and
how they are now able to feel like they can wear gender fluid fashion confidentley. The aim of this magazine is
to have a positive effect on people and to take gender out of fashion.
IDEA 2
Another idea I had was to create a magazine on the cyclical process of vintage and reclaimed fashion. This will
cover how fashion trends never really die and they will be rediscovered years on. I would probably cover
different decades and what fashion pieces were very in at the time such as;
70s- cowl neck, bell bottoms and flares, velour shirt
80s- mullets, ripped knees, cut off sweatshirts, leg warmers
90s- corset tops, slit dresses, layers, chokers
00’s- tank tops, low waist jeans, denim mini skirts
Strengths and weaknesses
For my FMP I have decided to create a fashion magazine the reason behind this is because I think my
strongest practical product is print and since it is my FMP I wanted to choose my strongest sector in order
to achieve the highest grade possible. I decided do a fashion magazine inparticular as I am very passionate
about fashion and feel like I have a lot of knowledge in fashion. Having knowledge in the particular genre of
magazine I will be doing will help me add maximum detail and make sure it is 100% accurate. I wanted to
create a magazine all about gender fluid fashion as it is something I am very interested in and follow a few
gender fluid fashion icons including Harris Reed and Harry styles therefore I had read and seen a lot of it so
I am confident in making my own.
I knew straight away that for my FMP I didn’t want to do an animation. Firstly because I thought that If I did
It would be very difficult for me to stay on time and I think my time management would not be the greatest
as I learnt from my adventure project that animation requires a lot of drawing and detail which is not my
strongest point.
KEY INFLUENCES
One Key influence of my idea for my magazine is singer/songwriter Harry Styles. Harry
has a very ‘feminine’ and Androgynous style that has inspired many of his fans to dress
the same. Harry once said in an interview for the guardian “If I see a nice shirt and get
told, ‘But it’s for ladies.’ I think: ‘Okaaaay? Doesn’t make me want to wear it less
though… I think the moment you feel more comfortable with your self, it all becomes a
lot easier.” That whole statement defines harry styles ‘fine line’ aesthetic perfectly
featuring an album cover shot by Tim Walker, in which Harry Styles wears custom Gucci
chosen by his long-term stylist Harry Lambert. in the music video for styles single
“Lights Up”, which sees him appear in looks ranging from a bespoke periwinkle suit
from Harris Reed to a chiffon rose shirt from queer Swedish brand Lazoschmidl. ““I
think it’s a very free, and freeing, time,” Styles continued. “I think people are asking,
‘Why not?’ a lot more. Which excites me.” I think this is a very positive message for
young fans of his and will have a positive effect on the way they think about gender
fluid fashion especially when it is coming from their ‘icon’ so to say. Harry started to
explore his fashion whilst he was in the hit boyband ‘one direction’. It was in early
2013, at the age of 19, that Harry began to break the mould and started wearing pieces
such as ; a printed Burberry shirt here, a skinny-jean-and-boots combination there, all
enhanced by his scrapbook-esque collection of tattoos. As the year ended, Harry had
collected a British Fashion award for his personal style.
Another key influence for this project is Harris Reed. Harris Reed is a British-American
Fashion designer, fighting for the beauty of fluidity. While still studying at Central
Saint Martins, Reed caught the attention of the likes of Harry Styles, Solange,
Alessandro Michele and Ezra Miller to name a few, resulting in high-profile press and
interviews placed with Vogue, GQ and Dazed, Another Man, Harper’s Bazaar to name
a few. The overall DNA of the Harris Reed brand and personal identity, is best
described as Romanticism Gone Nonbinary. It puts the wearer and their fluidity.
Personally, Reed dresses themselves to invite the looks and stares, to blur the
preconceived lines people have about gender and sexuality. Aside from fashion, Reed
is also well known for their campaign and relationship with Gucci, as well as being an
innovative key figure within the new generation of young creatives, whose work
marries genres from fashion, film, beauty, culture and the digital world through a
gender fluid lens. For Reed, fashion is truly revolutionary and has a huge role to play
in pushing the world to a more expressive and accepting place - using their platforms
to share their personal visionary values, to help those seeking acceptance and self-
love. Fans of people such as Harry styles, Alessandro Michele and Ezra Miller will also
follow and support Harris reed as they are helping their favourites celebrites express
and be themselves.
American actress, singer and producer Zendaya has also influenced my project.
Zendaya has just recently brought out her own clothing line Daya by Zendaya
which features all gender fluid clothing. Zendaya recently stated in an interview “I
just felt that if I’m going to do a clothing line, that’s the only way I see it being
done,” she also stated that gender fluidity is the future of fashion. Also in a
glamour interview Zendaya explained the importance of inclusiveness in the
fashion community. "I was lucky to have parents who let me wear what I wanted
to wear and let me shop where I wanted to shop. Nine times out of 10 I was
shopping in the boys section. Zendaya is proving every day that women are
limitless. Her fashion line promotes diversity in size, race and gender
with sizes from 0 to 22, website models of various ethnicities and absolutely no
gender categories. Zendaya, just like Harry Styles and Harris reed, are perfect
people to promote gender fluid fashion as they are lucky enough to have a huge
platform and fan base that look up to celebrities like this and follow in their
footsteps and support gender fluid fashion.
Visual ideas
MOOD BOARD ANALYSIS
These images that are on my mood board give me a very good idea
about what types of images and style of clothing I am going to
include in my magazine. For example in almost every single image
that I have included in the mood board the model is stood directly
in the middle of the shot in direct eyesight I think this is very
important that my shots look a lot similar to this as the sole
purpose of my magazine is to show the outfits so I need to make
sure that the outfit is the first thing that everyone sees and the
thing that entices people to my magazine. The androgynous
fashion that is shown throughout these images have really inspired
me and what clothing items I am going to showcase on the front of
my magazine especially. I feel like the main image on the front of
the magazine needs to be very powerful and inspiring. From
looking at my mood board some things I am going to include are;
pearl necklaces and earrings, big statement blouses, wide/flared
leg trousers.
