The document discusses how a media product called "Eternal" magazine represents social groups. The magazine targets teenagers and young adults aged 16-25. Models ages 16-17 are featured to appeal to this audience. While magazines typically portray teenagers as "rebellious" and "party goers", Eternal depicts them as "hedonists" who make everyday pleasurable, not fitting a rebellious stereotype. Though an emerging representation, it's not unusual to portray teenagers romantically. The magazine aims to attract both males and females through inclusive content but may attract more females due to feminine colors. Teenagers are represented positively as carefree with fun lifestyles.
1. Q2: How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
2. Eternal would target at a relatively younger audience from 16-
25. Teenagers and young adults. Therefore I have included
models in my magazine of the ages of 16-17 as it will appeal to
my audience more if they see someone who resembles them in
my magazine.
In my magazine I have decided to use emergent ideology of
how my age is represented in magazines, which is a challenge
to dominant ideology. An example of this is my front cover, In
which denotes two models- male and female, sitting on a
bench, with one models head lying on top of the shoulder of the
others. This connotes ‘cute’, and ‘romance’. But the teenagers
in general magazines would be more likely to represent
‘adrenaline junkies’, ‘rebellious’ and ‘party goers’. Therefore my
models on the front page are represented as hedonists- making
everyday of their lives pleasurable. They do not fit the rebellious
stereotype of teenagers.
My contents page also reinforces that teenagers do not fit into
the typical genre conventions, connoting ‘fun’. Although this is
emergent ideology, I do not believe this is alternative
representation as it isn’t an unusual representation of
teenagers, it’s just that teenagers are not represented as
romantic as much in a mainstream magazine.
3. For my magazine Eternal I have not specifically chosen a
gender, I believe that my magazine would attract to both
males and females, as it will relate to their interests. Also,
for my magazine I have mainly included White British
people, but this does not mean that it is only aimed at that
ethnicity, it is aimed at all ethnicities who would be
interested in my magazine, and are part of my target
audience.
Looking at the contents page of my magazine and my
front cover there are many more feminine colours, which
would attract more females (dominant ideology), but I also
believe that the contents inside of my magazine would
also attract males, and therefore I think that females are
more likely to buy my magazine then males.
My magazine represents both males and females in a
positive light, connoting carefree personas, and making
the best of everyday life.
4. A few of the features that I have included in my magazine can represent different ideologies and connotations. For
example, the fonts which I have used in my front cover, double page spread and contents page are all rather bold, and
stand out; which is how my magazine represents teenagers who are indie. The colours I have used are pinks, browns,
purples, greens and blues; which would usually aim at females (dominant ideology) but in the case of my magazine, I
believe that it could also aim at males; but they will be more attracted to what is inside of the magazine. The way my
models have dressed in my photos that I have included also play a role in the representation of teenagers, as my
models dress sense connotes being carefree, and casual, which is how I think would represent my target audience. The
locations denoted in my magazine are outdoor places, showing that teenagers love going out, and having fun and
having a good time.
5. Teenager stereotypes these days are typically not
pleasant. People look upon teenagers as if they
are disrespectful, party all the time, always getting
into trouble and don’t have any ambitions and any
plans for the future. These connote: chavs,
trouble makers, party goers, trouble makers, lazy
people.
6. In my magazine I have presented teenagers in a positive
way, and therefore have included emergent ideology in my
magazine. But also, the teenagers who would be more
attracted to my magazine would be teenagers who are
rather ‘indie’ living up to the stereotype, so in some ways my
magazine also includes dominant representation, and
dominant genre conventions. Which connote: free, maturity,
fun, compassionate, talented.
