Ingress Protection
Ingress Protection !?
• The International Electrotechnical Commission or IEC provides Ingress Protection (IP)
ratings that are used to determine the degree of protection provided by an electrical
enclosure.
• IP ratings define protection differently than an Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or
Canadian UL (cUL) Wet Location Listing
• Since the IEC is an international standards organization, IP ratings have global application
for lighting luminaire enclosures.
• Global acceptance of IP rated luminaires ensures straightforward communication of
enclosure ratings, facilitating specification on a worldwide scale.
• EN/IEC 60529 outlines an international classification system for the sealing effectiveness
of enclosures of electrical equipment against the intrusion into the equipment of foreign
bodies (i.e. tools, dust, fingers) and moisture. This classification system utilizes the letters
“IP” (“Ingress Protection”) followed by two or three digits. (A third digit is sometimes
used. An “x” is used for one of the digits if there is only one class of protection; i.e. IPX4
which addresses moisture resistance only.)
IPXXX numbers represent
The first digit represents protection against ingress of solid objects.
The second digit represents protection against ingress of liquids.
The third digit represents protection against mechanical impact
damage. (*The third digit is often omitted, resulting in a 2-digit IP
Rating covering ingress against solid objects and liquids only).
