ABSTRACT: Passing grades and retention through to degree are essential to success in higher education, but these factors are too often mistaken for ends in themselves. A high-performing student environment has provided teachers and researchers at Emory University with a space to think critically about what success means, and about the extent to which data might inform the design of successful learning environments. This presentation will (1) discuss some of the unique challenges encountered by Emory University during its 2013-2014 Blackboard Analytics pilot, (2) describe several provisional insights gained from exploratory data mining, and (3) outline how Emory’s pilot experience has informed support of learning analytics on campus. What we have learned at Emory University has both broad and deep implications for how institutions use data in support of student success, but these insights could only have been achieved in an environment where grade-performance and retention are not significant issues.

How can a university that already has very high levels of student performance and retention use data from its Blackboard® learning management system to identify effective teaching practices and at risk students? Based on experience gained from a year-long pilot of Blackboard Analytics™ for Learn at Emory University, this presentation will discuss (1) several unique challenges associated with the use of Blackboard Analytics™ to monitor high performing students, (2) the value of Blackboard Analytics™ as a data warehouse against which to run custom queries and apply more sophisticated data mining techniques, and (3) several preliminary insights obtained through the application of those techniques at Emory University.

Using social media like FriendFeed, students at the University of Leicester were able to develop personal learning networks for peer support, arrange both social and academic meetings, and provide data for measuring the student experience. Students produced thousands of posts, comments, and likes on the platform, using it for everything from sharing links and updates to deeply personal reflections. While traditional e-portfolios were disliked, the social media platform engaged students through status updates and rewards, providing sufficient scaffolding to encourage reflection on learning in a more popular way.

Learning via technology is the focus of many incoming students in today’s colleges and universities, so it is imperative that library staff embrace new technologies in order to stay relevant. This session will focus on how St. Petersburg College librarians, Gail Lancaster and Chad Mairn, have implemented several innovative technological services to assist students in finding and evaluating information. This presentation will include: the use of many web-based products that can be modified for use by libraries; unique methods in incorporating library services into the college’s course management system; how to successfully market these services to student and faculty, and how to measure the effectiveness of these new services.

Faculty development is occurring increasingly online through text-based guides, just-in-time video tutorials, and social media, which is convenient for faculty looking for information on teaching or using technology. However, this makes it difficult for faculty development centers, used to traditional forms of assessments, to assess the quality and effectiveness of these programs and resources.
In this session, we will share how the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center at Northern Illinois University has used web analytics to evaluate the usage of online materials and how the results have impacted our practice.
Open Education Resources: Benefits and Challenges

Universities archive massive amounts of data about students and their activities. Students also generate significant amounts of “digital exhaust” as they use academic technologies. How can faculty and administrators use automated analysis of this data to save time and conduct targeted interventions to improve student learning?
The emerging discipline of Learner Analytics conducts analysis of this data to learn about student behaviors, predict students at-risk of failure, and identify potential interventions to help those students. In this presentation, we will discuss the contours of this discipline and review the state of research conducted to date. We will then look at several examples of Learner Analytics services and hear from California State University educators who are using these tools to help their students. Finally, we will suggest some immediate ways that Analytics can be conducted at San Diego State.
