1.0 Introduction
It is a fact that we live in a high technology world with classrooms of high technology. Students now have the chance to enjoy the benefits of using iPads in classrooms, the opportunity to integrate tweets during presentations and the teachers also have the benefit of teaching students through the use of smart TVs. The use of internet facilitates communication internationally or even nationally and helps the students maintain close ties with family and friends most especially those leaving far away. In accordance to different researches, many college students use internet for interpersonal communication which is mostly through emails, instant messaging as well as chat programs (Gemmill & Peterson, 2006). The major benefits that are associated with the use of technology while teaching include increasing the interaction of students, adding diversity of the lessons and enabling the idea of bringing new knowledge and perspectives to the class. But despite the advantages that students may enjoy from the use of high technology, many other negative impacts may result as a result of using the technology inappropriately or over-usage. This essay majorly aims at evaluating the main benefits that students are likely to embrace when they use high technology in classes as well as negative impacts that may affect students learning and concentration in class. The essay also aims at evaluating the literature showing the studies that have earlier been conducted on the impacts of technology to college students. For teachers, students and parents to enjoythe best of the advancement in technology, they must be able to recognize their weaknesses and try and get rid of them ( DeLoatch, 2015).
Just like any other aspect, the advancement in technology has it benefits as well as its consequences. Many of college teens spend a significant portion of their time in screen and most especially computers and smartphones. Not all the time the teens spend on the computers or the smartphones goes to waste since it may also be beneficial to the student’s college experience. The student is able to learn about various technological devices as well as several uses before going to the college and thus the student is more prepared for the class. The best advantage of useof technology is the ability to connect with people both internationally and nationally but many students use internet just to fill all the time they have, neglect normal social interactions or even avoid other life responsibilities (Inoue, 2007). 1. Promotes independent learning in students
The internet is a treasure trove of information. Practically anything you need to know can be
found online. Although there is a question of the credibility of the source and the data provided,
it can still serve as an educational resource for students. Even without assistance from parents
and teachers, students can just look up their lessons online.
Unlike regular textbooks, electronic books and web-based content are updated in real time,
feeding students with the most current information they can get their hands on, helping them
become more knowledgeable even outside the classroom setting.
2. Prepares students for the future
From the way technological advancements are going, it is obvious that the future will be digital
and technology-focused. If students are well-versed on using technology to collaborate and
communicate as early as now, they will not have trouble fitting in, competing and finding jobs in
the future. Being familiar with using at least one form of technology at an early age will help
them become comfortable using it, and eventually develop other skills necessary to handle other
innovative devices and processes.
3. Has the potential to lower textbook and tuition prices
With resources more accessible and in great abundance, the cost of textbooks is likely to
decrease. It is also possible that students may no longer need to buy a textbook, if it is converted
into digital format. The actual books can stay in the classroom, while the content is saved on a
student’s computer.
Tuition will also decrease when learning is done online, rather than inside the classroom. By
taking out the factors that contribute to a higher tuition fee, such as utility bills and transportation
allowance of teachers, the overall cost of education will be lower.
4. Allows teachers to create an exciting way to educate students
Gone are the days when the only tools for teaching are limited to books, a blackboard or
whiteboard, and a chalk or markers. With technology integrated to education, teachers can now
incorporate images, videos and other graphics when delivering lessons. Specific websites, apps
and programs will also enable teachers to vary how they provide instructions. This creates an
exciting learning environment and promotes interest in education in general.
Other tools available for teachers include Smart Boards (interactive whiteboards), email Skype,
and PowerPoint.
5. Encourages development of new teaching methods
Rather than spend an hour or so talking while the students listen, or have them read an entire
chapter in silence, teachers and professors now have the option to use advanced teaching
methods, such as podcasts, blogs and social media. When working with a particular group or
one-on-one, teachers can take advantage of web conferencing technologie.

The purpose of present study is to investigate the impacts of incorporating Edmodo as educational network,
into a classroom setting on the academic achievement of Biology students based on three types of
conceptual level comprises of direct, simple, and complex concept. Researcher intended to seek for the
reason of improvement in their achievement test for all the three types of conceptual level. A total of 140
Biology students was selected from three secondary schools which were chosen using convenient random
sampling to participate in this study and were divided randomly into two groups. A mixed methods design
which involved pretest-and post-test was obtained as quantitative data and follow-up with in-depth
interview was obtained as qualitative data. Mann–Whitney U tests were used to analyze students’ gain
scores. The results indicated that students that were instructed by the instruction with intervention
performed a larger on the gain scores of all the three cognitive levels; than those instructed by the
conventional approaches. Five themes of reason for the difference on gain score between control group
and experimental group were found from interview data which encompass self-paced learning, boredom,
complex conceptual understanding, interesting and motivation, extra information and; communication and
interactivity. This educational network will permeate all facets of the curriculum as a new paradigm of
teaching tools.

This paper discusses the subject matter that students are being harmed by their overdependence on personal digital technology. It highlights four main points to support this argument and offers one counter argument. It concludes by stating that in as much as technology does harm students, it has contributed to the quality of education.
Overdependence of personal digital technology by students should be monitored and regulated as they are adversely affected.
First, statistics report that three in four teens (74%) aged 12-17 own cell phones, tablets and other devices (Pew Research Centre, 2013). This is alarming as one wonders what time do they get to their studies and even socializing. Students’ overdependence on technology adversely affects their social skills which enhance interaction and communication with others.
The second argument is that students visit social media sites multiple times in a day and this means that they do not get to their school assignments and if they do, it is not their best work. This is because their brains are overexcited with what is in the internet thus limiting their imagination and memory capacity. Richtell (2012) reports that based on research done on effects of technology on students, 90% of teachers stated that technology has been very distractive and limited attention spans of students.
Frequent use of technological devices limits their ability to search for good quality research materials and sources. The internet can mislead them thus they may end up producing poor quality schoolwork.
Last but not least, students are exposed to social dangers such as obesity, suicidal thought processes and even criminal activities. Technology makes students feel a sense of adventure and they therefore develop a persona who can break rules without caring about the consequences. They also risk being brainwashed thus they may lose their identity leading to dangerous traits such as being suicidal or depressive symptoms.
However technology has made modern life easy and convenient especially in terms of education. Students are able to easily access a wide variety of educational tools in the internet. According to Bruyckere et al. (2016), the appropriate use of tools and resources can positively change education.
