Information Literacy Defined
“The ability to locate, retrieve, evaluate, and use
relevant resources to address an information need”
An information literate individual is able to:
 Determine the extent of information needed
 Access the needed information effectively and efficiently
 Evaluate information and its sources critically
 Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base
 Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
 Understand the economic, legal, and social issues
  surrounding the use of information,

the American Association for Higher Education, the Council of Independent Colleges)
Information Literacy Defined

 Information literacy forms the basis for lifelong
  learning. It is common to all disciplines, to all learning
  environments, and to all levels of education. It enables
  learners to master content and extend their
  investigations, become more self-directed, and assume
  greater control over their own learning.
 “Information literacy” and “foundations and skills
  for lifelong learning” are among the Essential Learning
  Outcomes developed by AACU (American Association of
  Colleges and Universities)
 Information literacy is not the same as computer
  literacy (which requires a technological know-how to
  manipulate computer hardware and software)

Information Literacy Defined “The ability to locate, retrieve, evaluate, and use relevant resources to address an information need” An information literate individual is able to:  Determine the extent of information needed  Access the needed information effectively and efficiently  Evaluate information and its sources critically  Incorporate selected information into one’s knowledge base  Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose  Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, (Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education 2000, ALA, ACRL, endorsed by the American Association for Higher Education, the Council of Independent Colleges)
  • 4. Information Literacy Defined  Information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning. It is common to all disciplines, to all learning environments, and to all levels of education. It enables learners to master content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed, and assume greater control over their own learning.  “Information literacy” and “foundations and skills for lifelong learning” are among the Essential Learning Outcomes developed by AACU (American Association of Colleges and Universities)  Information literacy is not the same as computer literacy (which requires a technological know-how to manipulate computer hardware and software)
