An experiment exposed 162 girls ages 5 to 8 to images of Barbie dolls, Emme dolls (size 16), or no dolls. Girls who saw Barbie images reported lower body esteem and a greater desire for a thinner body shape than other groups. However, this effect was no longer seen in the oldest girls. Early exposure to Barbie's unrealistic thin ideal may negatively impact girls' body image and increase risks of disordered eating, though the doll's influence seems to diminish with age.

#1 Have you ever observed people using baby talk when communicatin.docxboadverna
#1 Have you ever observed people using "baby talk" when communicating with an infant? How do people in your cultural environment interact with a pre-verbal child? Which way of interacting with a pre-verbal child seems better to you, the one displayed by Katie's mother or the one used by Bage's mother (both described in Ahearn, chapter 3)? Make sure to address all parts of the topic in your post.
sample answers
1) I grew up with many younger siblings and as with most Middle Eastern families, so did my friends, so I have been around babies my entire life. I have noticed that men and women interact and talk with babies differently. For example, women tend to make their voice squeakier or more high pitched than it normally is. I did notice that this happens more frequently in However, I have noticed that men often do not do this and simply continue talking to babies in their normal voice. Of course, not everyone is like this and different people have their individual ways of interacting with children.
I think it is important for people to interact with babies, even if they do not understand. Katie’s mother is a better way of interacting with children than Bage’s mother. The more babies are exposed to language, the more likely they are to recognize and understand words as they grow. I think it is also important for children to be exposed to different dialects, accents, tones in the voice, and facial expressions. Children who are exposed to different tones, such as anger with specific words or joy with specific words. This also helps children to understand the emotional state in which certain words are used to expressed those emotions. Facial expressions are also important because they help children distinguish different emotions and help them practice expressions to help them communicate when they are older.
2)
I'd have to say in my experience, while most people I've seen interacting with babies will use a higher pitch than normal, most don't make baby noises, which is what I've always thought of as "baby talk." Children will often babble, coo, mimic, or make up silly sounds, but the adults mostly will use full English, just with a cutesy voice. I don't think there is a "better" and certainly not a "best" way of interacting with a pre-verbal child, although I am partial to the style of Katie's mother.
My mom used to run a daycare out of our home, and there was one boy that had severe speech impediments all because his mother never let him speak for himself, and when he did speak, she would just accept whatever he said, rather than teaching him. That seems like the example of Bage's mother taken to an unhealthy extreme, but it's the closest I've come to personally witnessing that style. I'd have to say that style doesn't work at that point, but my example is after the child was verbal, while the example from the book said that once the child is verbal, the mother pushes him to interact with others. From my experience in other courses, I'd ...

This document discusses the negative effects of cell phones and technology on children's development. It provides the example of a 3-year-old boy who was given a cell phone by his parents to keep him occupied and entertain him while they took care of infant twins. A few months later, the boy became constantly consumed by his phone and would watch it during meals, bath time, and getting dressed. He also started ignoring family members when they spoke to him unless they repeated themselves multiple times. The document indicates that while technology initially helps keep kids occupied, it can negatively impact development if used excessively at a young age.
Similar to Informal learning and the globalization of Internet social media (20)
This document discusses three eras in applied linguistics research methodologies: the invisible learner era, the learner-centered era, and the person-centered era. It summarizes how approaches have shifted from a focus on linguistics and classroom teaching, to scrutinizing individual learners as abstract variables, to emphasizing learners' social contexts, agency, and identities. The social turn in applied linguistics recognizes language learning as embedded in intricate social interactions, involving learners' personal backgrounds and motivations within wider social networks. The document also questions whether critiques of individualism have gone too far and discusses relationships between theory and methodology.

Informal learning in new media environments: Translanguaging, sociality and i...Phil Benson
1) Globalization and social media have created opportunities for informal language learning through translanguaging and social interaction across language boundaries on platforms like YouTube.
2) Videos that include multiple languages can lead to comments in different languages as viewers from various cultures engage.
3) These interactions provide opportunities for negotiation of meanings and exploration of intercultural issues, supporting informal language and cultural learning.
Researching language learning beyond the classroomPhil Benson
This document summarizes research on language learning beyond the classroom. It finds that while 30% of research articles in one journal were classroom-based, most language learning occurs outside formal instruction. Research in this area examines topics like self-directed learning, media exposure, study abroad, and communities of practice. However, measurement studies and aptitude research typically rely on classroom samples, potentially biasing findings. More research is needed on variables, settings, and learner experiences beyond traditional classrooms.
This document discusses how YouTube serves as a platform for negotiating cultural and linguistic identities through user comments on videos. It analyzes comments on videos by East Asian pop stars singing in English, which provoked discussion of whether Asian singers can sing in English and express sexuality. The document argues that YouTube comments create a virtual space where identities can be negotiated across East Asia and its diasporas at a regional scale through English. It also examines comments on a video of a loud "Bus Uncle" in Hong Kong that invoke issues of Hong Kong, Chinese, and regional Asian identities and cultures.
Popular culture and education: How it teaches and how we learnPhil Benson
This document discusses the relationship between popular culture and education. It presents different perspectives on how popular culture can be integrated into or separated from education. Some key debates discussed include whether popular culture should be the object of critique or a medium for teaching; how theories of learning like constructivism and play-based learning relate to issues of media effects; and the role of the teacher in navigating different stances like moral, generational, and neutral academic perspectives on popular culture. The document considers a variety of sources and outlines pedagogical options and theoretical frameworks for conceptualizing the intersection of popular culture and learning.
Utada Hikaru and Tata Young adopted new identities through English language lyrics in their music that asserted sexual independence. However, their use of English problematized discussions of their language, ethnicity, and gender identities among YouTube commenters. While some supported artists using their own musical styles, others felt English performances displaced their Asian identities or gender norms. The study showed language is tied to identity negotiations in globalized East Asian popular music markets.

The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
