This document summarizes research on language learning beyond the classroom. It finds that while 30% of research articles in one journal were classroom-based, most language learning occurs outside formal instruction. Research in this area examines topics like self-directed learning, media exposure, study abroad, and communities of practice. However, measurement studies and aptitude research typically rely on classroom samples, potentially biasing findings. More research is needed on variables, settings, and learner experiences beyond traditional classrooms.
