As a result of the changing landscape to many industries, fraud is a growing problem – accelerating in both the number of incidences and in its complexity. In Canada, we estimate that the total impact of fraud is close to $2 billion – stemming from both losses and cost of operations. These challenges have opened the door for Symcor to offer industry-leading digital and data services to detect and prevent current and emerging fraud. Hortonworks worked with us to transform our service offerings with industry-leading solutions to drive digital and data services. One of our most significant features we developed in the delivery of digital and data services was how we have provided industry-leading data governance and security solutions to protect our clients’ data. To ensure we were doing the right things, Symcor’s Privacy and Data Governance team designed a comprehensive data governance policy to empower the ethical use of data for fraud detection and prevention. Hortonworks was able to provide us with a platform that allowed for the development of industry-leading solutions that allowed us to integrate our comprehensive data governance policies within these technology solutions.
Thanks to Hortonworks assistance, we were able to deliver the objectives listed above. This solution has helped Symcor enhance its business offerings from a leading business processing provider in Canada, to an industry-leading digital and data services provider. Attaining IoT Value: How To Move from Connecting Things to Capturing InsightsSustainable Brands
Cisco estimates that the Internet of Everything (IoE) — the networked connection of people, process, data, and things — will generate $19 trillion in Value at Stake for the private and public sectors combined between 2013 and 2022. More than 42 percent of this value — $8 trillion — will come from one of IoE’s chief enablers, the Internet of Things (IoT). Defined by Cisco as “the intelligent connectivity of physical devices, driving massive gains in efficiency, business growth, and quality of life,” IoT often represents the quickest path to IoE value for private and public sector organizations.
This paper combines original and secondary research, as well as economic analysis, to provide a roadmap for maximizing value from IoT investments. It also explains why, in the worlds of IoT and IoE, the combination of edge computing/analytics and data center/cloud is essential to driving actionable insights that produce improved business outcomes.
Understanding Content:Machine Learning & the Modern InsurerNuxeo
In today’s digital world, insurers are literally drowning in content. Accident photos, policy applications, statements, customer emails and SMS messages -- these are all content that underpins your business and your customer experience. Yet for most insurers, content remains a massive business challenge: difficult to find, hard to process, impossible to analyze, and oh so expensive.
Discover how AI and machine learning can be used to transform your content into a business advantage.
We'll share real examples of how other P&C and Health insurers are using these technologies to automate virtual claims, intelligently process policy applications, detect fraud, and even gain new insight into accident damage.
You will learn:
- How AI uniquely addresses your content challenges
- Why custom ML models deliver more value
- What “content lakes” are, and what value they add
- How to take your first steps with AI
The Internet of Things (IoT) redefines the notion of connectivity; a transition to a vast, all-encompassing web of interconnected devices which uses data to measure, calculate, evaluate and learn. This network transcends the traditional comprehension of M2M in both capability and scale, linking together billions of devices and integrating everything from tiny remote beacons to large communications networks and energy infrastructure.
The potential of this vast connected network is staggering, and brings forth real capacity to help address some of our most crucial socio-economic concerns. Devices can utilise the data at their disposal to optimise efficiency and help reduce waste. Sensors can pre-empt mechanical breakdowns and determine the most safe and cost-effective time to schedule maintenance and repair. Energy systems can be transformed into smart grids, achieving improved efficiency by ensuring supply is regulated in accordance with actual real-time demand. It is this capacity to harness vast amounts of data to understand problems and identify solutions which underlines the true potential of IoT.
This conference will bring together technologists from industry, academia and government to explore the evolution of the Internet of Things. The programme will contextualise IoT within the current technology landscape and assess the implications for business and wider society. Delegates will hear from an impressive array of thought leaders and benefit from presentations which demonstrate the value of IoT in a practical context.
IoT Scotland will bring together 200 IT Heads and Business Leaders to learn, share and discuss, creating a unique opportunity for networking and knowledge exchange. The conference is organised by Scot-Tech Engagement and will be free* to attend for business leaders and IT personnel.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

The client needed to increase sales
of the company marketing services
to pharmaceutical companies,
which in their turn are selling their
services to Healthcare
Professionals.
Due to EU regulations, HCPs cannot
be distracted for more than 15
minutes. The main challenge was
to create short and highly efficient
interactive presentation apps
which could quickly and effectively
be presented to HCPs.
• Infopulse came up with a set of
interactive iPad presentations.
Each presentation is customized
to be used by a company client
and tailored for specific
business opportunities.
• Mechanism of action, medical
trials, how product affects the
pathology – it all can be shown
through animation, graphs and
interactive presentation
elements.
• The presentation apps are
dynamic, contain vivid 2D and
3D animation with lots of
interactive elements, ensuring
engagement of the clients and
involving them into dialogue.
• The app allows to gather data
from the client, generate
reports, monitor client’s
attitude to the presentation.
• Increased sales to such giants as
Amgen, Bayer, Pfizer, Roche,
Teva, Unileve, and more.
• Coffeescript, Jade Template

similar to Viber, Skype or Telegram
that would nullify chances for
external data interception or
hacking (voice, text etc.).
