Poor sleep patterns in infants have been linked to behavioral issues later in childhood. However, the underlying causes of both poor infant sleep and later behavioral problems are still unknown. Disturbances in habituation, which can result from prenatal alcohol exposure, disrupt infant sleep and contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders like fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Rather than causing neurological impairments, poor infant sleep is a consequence of widespread brain development issues stemming from the most frequent cause - prenatal alcohol exposure.
