INDUSTRIAL
POLLUTION IN
INDIA
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
RANJANI SHUKLA
MEANING
 Industrialization started gaining its popularity by 19th
century even though it was initiated in the 18th
century in the European countries.
 Any form of pollution that can trace its immediate
source to industrial practices is known as industrial
pollution.
 Countries adult facing sudden and rapid growth of
such industries are finding it to be a serious problem
which has to be brought under control immediately
MEANING
Industrial pollution is the release over waste and pollutants
generated by industrial activities into the natural environment
including air, water and land.
The pollutants and wastes from industries emcompass air
emissions, deposit of used water into water resources, landfill
disposal, and injection of toxic materials underground.
Industrial pollution can adversely damage plants, kill animals, cause
ecosystem imbalance and degrade the quality of life.
TYPES OF INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION
 Industries such as power plants, steel mills Sewage treatment
plants, heating plants, and glass smelting among other
production, processing and manufacturing companies are
the contributors to the industrial pollution.
 They release smoke, effluent, material waste, toxic
byproducts, contaminated residues, and chemical consumer
products that eventually end up in the environment thereby
causing pollution.
 Poisonous gases like nitrous oxide, Sulphur dioxide(SO2),
nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphureous particulate
matter, smoke col dust, fly ash, fluorine (F), inorganic
waste pigments, alkalis (NaOH), phenol, chromates, organic
waste, heavy metals and even hot water etc. Are all major
pollutants in industrial pollution.
TYPES OF INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION
PROCESS WASTE: They waste generated in an industry during washing
and processing of raw materials. This may be organic or inorganic depending
on the raw materials both are toxic to living organisms.
CHEMICAL WASTE: The chemical substance generated as a by-product
during the preparation of the product are the chemical waste products. These
include heavy metals and their ions, detergents, acids and alkalis etc.
TYPES OF INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION
Water Pollution AIR POLLUTION SOIL POLLUTION NOISE POLLUTION TOXIC WASTE
TYPES OF INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION
 Water Pollution: This is caused by industrial
waste that are allowed to flow into freshwater
bodies. In India, the industries that contributed
most to water pollution are chemical, textile,
paper, oil, refineries and leather units.
Unregulated growth and geographical spread of
small-scale units has been one of the major cause
of water pollution in India.
TYPES OF INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION
 Air Pollution: This is caused by the presence of
harmful gases like sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide,
and carbon monoxide that are released when fuel
are burned. Air – borne particulate materials in
solid and liquid forms cause air pollution. Smoke
emitted by chemical plants, paper
factories, refineries etc result in air pollution.
Bhopal gas tragedy that took place in 1984 is one
of the biggest industrial disasters in India.
TYPES OF INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION
 Soil Pollution: It is also referred this soil contamination.
It occurs when pollutants in the soil reduce soil quality and
make it inhabitable to organisms such as insects.
 This destroys the ecosystem necessary to sustain that
quality of soil. Industrial activities caused the soil
contamination in several ways. One of the major factor
causing soil contamination in India is the extensive use
of inorganic fertilizers. Industrial development leads to soil
pollution due to erosion, compaction and damage resulting
from construction and mining activities. Industrial units
also dump industrial chemicals, heavy metals, non-
biodegradable materials, contributed to soil contamination.
TYPES OF INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION
 Noise Pollution: Industrial activities
can cause noise pollution.
Construction, quarrying, machinery
and equipment, generators, electric
and pneumatic drills and saws cause
noise pollution.
 In India places where there is
concentration Industrial units, noise
pollution is also caused due to heavy
movement of traffic. In India, noise
pollution is considered a part of air
pollution.
TYPES INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION
 CARBON MONOXIDE (CO): is colorless, odorless toxic gas produced during
incomplete combustion of carbon fuels – natural gas, oil, coal, wood. It
inhibits the bloods capacity to carry oxygen and cuts off needed oxygen to
organ and cells.
 BURNING FOSSIL FUELS: When fossil fuels are burned, they release carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gases, which in turn trap heat in our
atmosphere, making them the primary contributors to global
warming and climate change. Generates between 70-80% of manmade carbon
dioxide (CO2) emissions.
