Indiana Jones Research Paper
There is a reason that Indiana Jones does not like snakes. They are dangerous. That being said, it is
rare, to be bitten by a snake and die from it; at least when compared to dying of auto accident,
cancer, or heart disease. Some snakes have venom, but it is not deadly Some do not have any venom
at all, but it is the way the snake wraps itself around you and tightens its grip until it kills you.
Tropical areas are the best place to find a lot of these snakes. Here is my top ten list of the most
dangerous snake species in the world.
10. Copperhead
A moderately sized snake, less than three feet long on average, some can get up to four feet. The
copperhead weighs anywhere from eight to twelve ounces. The venom is fairly painful. Hides itself

They can get set to strike, strike and back to its strike position in less than .15 seconds. The venom
per bite can be as little as seventy milligrams and as high as 236 milligrams. They hide in wait,
when they hear humans coming, to strike; this increases their risk of being stepped on, but they are
much more dangerous to strike.
8. Cottonmouth
Also referred to as the water moccasin, the bite is more harmful and deadly than that of the
copperhead, but does not lead to death. That much, anyway. It is more aggressive than the
copperhead, but only bites when it is touched. More aggressive reputation and strikes a ready to bite
pose. The snake can get up to six feet long.
7. Common krait
Often considered India's most dangerous snake. The venom contains highly powerful neurotoxins
which cause the muscles to become paralyzed. It has two kinds of neurotoxins (postsynaptic and
presynaptic) that usually affect the nerve endings located close to the synaptic cleft of the brain.
6. Inland Taipan
This snake has the most venom, more than any other snake in the world. If left untreated, the death
rate from a bite from this snake is eighty percent. That being said, this snake does not usually bite, is
actually easy going, and stays away from confrontation.

Fantasy/action
This action filled, heart pounding movie is and amazing film which follows a professor of
archeology all over the world on a very important quest. Raiders of the Lost Ark was a suspenseful
and mysterious movie that jumped from cliffhanger to cliffhanger so at each turn everyone would
wonder what just happened. Adults, teenagers and anyone in between will have their mouths agape
as they follow a new and very daring character from the jungle to the desert as he searches for
something that has never been found before. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After Indiana Jones was informed about finding something that could mean an amazing discovery
for archeologists all around the world he jumped on the chance. Soon Jones set out to Tenisia so he
could find the first part of what he needs to unlock the Arc of the covenant. Once he gets to Tensisia
he goes to find an old friend, Mary (Karen Allen), Jones goes to her bar and talks to her and offers
her money for one very special piece that she has. Mary shews Jones away, but soon after someone
who is after the very same thing as Jones comes into the bar and asks May for the same thing. The
whole situation soon turns upside down as the Nazis hold her at gunpoint until a certain hero comes
in and helps Mary out this terrible situation. This action packed, heart–pounding scene is one of
many that occurs throughout this amazing

The Ark Motif In Raiders Of The Lost Ark
As well as these two themes, there are also a handful of leitmotifs used throughout Raiders of the
Lost Ark, one of the most important being the Ark leitmotif. This motif is created with low rumbling
noises from the cello and low brass, mixing with trumpets and higher trilling strings. This creates a
majestic and mysterious sound that also sends shivers down your back to insinuate the amazing
power that God has put into The Ark of the Covenant. This Ark motif is first introduced when
Indiana Jones presents a picture of the Ark to government officials when speaking to them about the
quest for the Ark. Like "Marion's Theme", the Ark leitmotif gradually grows, adding more
instruments and lengthening the piece every time it is introduced, but still keeping the same basic
concept.
Another leitmotif in this score is known as the Nazi leitmotif. However, this leitmotif is unlike the
Ark motif in the fact that it is very subtle. So subtle that some may not even consider it a motif. This
leitmotif is made from using low brass instruments such as trombones, baritones, euphoniums,
trumpets, and even incorporating some percussion. It is argued that this is not a leitmotif because
every time it is reintroduced, it sounds nothing like the time before. However, these ... Show more

This is first used when Indiana Jones and the first Nazi Mechanic get into a fist fight. There is a
sequence of five swings between Indiana Jones and the Nazi where a high trumpet and piccolo are
used to accompany each swing. A second instance mickey mousing is used is very similar to the first
one, except the first Nazi mechanic is now replaced by the second one. Once again mickey mousing
is used with each punch that is thrown. As one can see, the most prominent mickey mousing is only
used when punches are thrown between Indiana Jones and the Nazis, however this whole scene is a
fight scene so it is fairly

Comparing The Opening Scene In Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Tomorrow Never Dies
'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and 'Tomorrow Never Dies' are both action films with a similar theme.
Both films are about good fighting evil. The heroes have many similarities and differences. 'Raiders
of the Lost Ark' is targeted at any age, its certificate PG. 'Tomorrow Never Dies' is targeted at twelve
years onwards and is a certificate 12. Both films may appeal more to teenage males who may look
up to Indiana Jones and James Bond because they are good looking men who have exciting, action

Indiana Jones Archaeology
After rewatching Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark for the second time I view Indiana Jones as
less of an archaeologist than I did the first time I watched it. In my first paper I stated that Indiana
Jones was a combination of a grave digger and an archaeologist. Now after completing this course I
see that he is even less of an archaeologist than I first depicted. The only ethical archaeology being
conducted in this movie is done by the Nazi's; not Indiana Jones. Beyond, getting historical
accuracy of the time period correct this movie fails fails to paint a picture of what archaeology truly
is. In turn, since my knowledge is far more comprehensive I have come to realize that the movie
fails to showcase archaeology even more than I originally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, this isn't Indiana Jones conducting archaeology properly, but rather the Nazi's. When
Indiana Jones came to the lost city of Tanis, the Nazi's were having the Egyptian site excavated by
hundreds of people. This site had to have been properly funded and to have used a survey strategy as
they were very close to the location as a result of proper research and clues from the medallion.
Their site featured camp sites, carts, and variety of digging tools. In the brief depiction of the site it
looked like the Nazi's used vertical excavation as they have dug a substantial way into the ground in
order to try and recover the ark. In terms of tools I noticed they were only using shovels, and then
using baskets to clean up the dirt. The one thing that I did notice that was not an accurate portrayal
was how people were digging. They were digging with large shovels and digging out large scoops
of dirt in the process. In reality, archaeologists tend to use smaller tools to look for artifacts and be
much more precise with their digs. However, this may have been the case since they seemed to be
only looking for the ark. A true archaeological dig would have paid attention to the small pieces of
pottery and other small artifacts that would have been on site, looking to document the past rather to
just find one piece of treasure. Lastly, the lost city of Tanis looks like it was a State based on the
labor investment of the monument to keep the lost ark a

Indiana Jones And The Last Cadesade Essay
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is an epic movie. Joseph Campbell created "The Hero's Journey"
model. This model helps to characterize a specific piece of literature as an epic. It is a pattern of
narrative. It explains the typical adventure of the Hero. The Hero achieves great deeds on behalf of
the group. It helps a person dissect a piece of literature, a movie in this case, and learn about all the
different parts. If the piece of literature fits into every part, then it classifies as an epic. Indiana Jones
and the Last Crusade fulfills each part of this model. The 1989 movie Indiana Jones and the Last
Crusade, written by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg, meets all the criteria outline by
Campbell in his "Hero's Journey" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this point, the character is rescued from pain and suffering. Indiana achieves all of the tests of
faith and chooses the right Grail. The true Grail is wooden and worthy of a humble carpenter. Then,
he uses the Grail to heal his father. The Grail helped them get to the point at which their relationship
is renewed. The quest was successfully achieved, but there is one problem: The Grail can't come
back with them. The knight warned them that the Grail could not go past the Great Seal. They have
to leave it there in the temple, because it can't leave its "magical world". Despite the warning, Elsa
tries to leave with the Grail. The temple starts to shake and fall to pieces. The Grail slips into the
crevasse. Elsa goes after it and Indiana tries to hold on to her, but she falls. Then, Indiana tries to get
it, and Henry holds on to him. He tried so hard to stretch and reach the Grail, but he could not. His
father pulls him back. He says, "Indiana, let it go." ( Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). That was
the first time he did not call him Junior. Indiana did not want to give up, because he wanted to
complete his fathers dream of getting the Grail. By Henry saying to let it go, it showed that Indiana
is more important to him than the Cup of Christ. The Crossing of the Return Threshold is the final
exit. It is when Henry and Indiana finally leave the doorway of the temple. Indiana learns to master
both worlds.

Indiana Jones: A Career In Archaeology
Perhaps the most simultaneously educational, thrilling and philanthropic career in the field of
geography is that of an archaeologist. As a student of human history and an explorer of ancient
culture, archaeologists ultimately uncover the history of mankind for global consumption and
benefit. When compared, the above–average pay, frequent travel and relative job stability outweigh
the limited job prospects and on–the–job dangers, making archaeology one of, if not, the top career
choice(s) in the field of geography.
Despite Indiana Jones making archaeology out to be nothing more than leather, bullwhips and
paranormal activity, it – archaeology – is actually a noble career, fit for the best of the best. In
addition to excavating ancient artifacts, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Archaeology is far from a cushy office job; most of the work is physically gruelling and may require
relocation to remote areas for extended periods of time, leaving archaeologists at risk for countless
foreign diseases and parasites. In addition to the physical risks, archaeologists accrue a significant
amount of debt, as they are required to, at least, earn a bachelor's degree and, subsequently, spend
thousands of dollars that they may not have on post–secondary education. Debt, malaria and
maggots aside, a job in archaeology practically guarantees international travel, with the added bonus
of being paid for it. Perhaps the best way to work in archaeology is with a cultural resource
management firm, as most archaeologists today are, likely because they enable the warm, self–
aggrandizing feeling that accompanies the knowledge that a piece of history was just preserved and
made available to the public. The risks taken to preserve these pieces of history are always fully
calculated and minimized but in the event that the unfortunate does occur, archaeologists merely tap
into the plethora of benefits bestowed upon them – a 401k plan, a medical, dental and vision plan,
life insurance and paid holiday – and re–calibrate their lives. Although being an archaeologist is not
without its downsides, its advantages not only outweigh, but surpass

Raiders Of The Lost Ark Analysis
Raiders of the Lost Ark directed by Steven Spielberg, has all original music composed and
conducted by John Williams. In the, Golden Idol and Boulder Scene we see Indiana Jones and his
helper encounter the golden idol. Here jones stands before the idol and there is dissonant music
playing this music makes it seem like something is about to happen. We then hear what sounds like
a trombone playing a dissonant chord. Jones's assistant then makes a move toward the idol but Indy
stops him before he can even take a step. Then jones crouches down to check a booby trap and we
hear what sounds like a clarinet, making suspicious and not very clear sounds, after this happens we
hear a sharp flute and an arrow is shot at a stick Indiana ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Indiana is forced to ask his assistant to throw the whip so he can swing from one side of the pit to
the other, music pauses a bit when his assistant tells him to throw the idol to him. Jones thinks twice
before doing so but he throws it over because the trap door was closing off, his assistant betrays him
and drops his whip. Here the music starts again in the same high paced way it was before; Indiana is
force to make the jump and just makes it. When he jumps we here a light, higher pitched sound.
Then the camera pans out and we see the trap door closing slowly. As the trap door closes we here
low minor sound coming from what sounds like a trombone and maybe some trumpets. Indiana
Jones manages to get a hold of a rope and pulls himself out of the pit and through the trap door just
in time. The high rate music continues and then we get an exclamation in brass sounds as Jones
turns to see his traitor impaled and dead with stakes going down his

Romantic Hero: Indiana Jones
Being a Romantic hero means possessing certain qualities that regular people lack such as doing
thing ordinary people can't do or doing something that will benefit the mankind. Indiana Jones:
Raiders of the Lost Ark is a 1981 American action–adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg.
This movie shows a hero, Indiana Jones, going through a lot and becoming a romantic hero by
doing the impossible.Steven Spielberg does a great job of showing the qualities of a romantic hero
within Indiana Jones with great usage of cinematic techniques and music, bringing out the hero in
Indiana Jones. In the movie "Indiana Jones the Raider of the Lost Ark" Jones shows many
characteristics. One of them was being able to do things ordinary men can't do. In the scene where
Indiana Jones had found where the Ark of the Covenant was located, and Jones and some friends
went there and they realized the bottom of the pit was covered with snakes. Jones might not fear a
lot of things but a snake was his biggest fear. For him to be a man and admit to his fear of snakes
and overcome his fear is a sign of a Romantic hero. Steven Spielberg shows the scene with scary
music setting a mysterious and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

truck to stop the Nazis in their process of trying to destroy the world. This scene uses many camera
angles to show the courageous Jones from stopping the Nazis. The music used in this scene was
very dramatic and it makes the viewer intrigued and foreshadowing about what is going to happen

Maaccuracies In The Mummy
The Mummy For decades, several major Hollywood movies have tried to capture the essence of
what they imagine an archaeologist does and believes. Although not many have gotten it right there
are some movies that really capture the heart of an archaeologist. One excellent example is "The
Mummy" directed by Stephen Sommers. The main characters in The Mummy are Rick played
Brendan Fraser and Evelyn played Rachel Weisz. Evelyn works at Cairo's museum of Antiquities,
and refers herself as a librarian, though she seems to have much knowledge of the Egyptian
antiquities. Fascinated, but with little experience Evelyn seeks out to gain status and provide the

Many of them just thought that if they dug deep enough, searched hard enough they might just get
lucky. Those people had no respect for the dead, even though native people near Hamunaptra try to
worn them "if you don't leave by sunrise, you shall all die." The travelers just laughed it off and
continued their search destroying everything left and right. When this part of the movie was going
on, it reminded me of what we learned in our lecture about the Native American Graves Protection
and Repatriation Act. Although the movie took place in Egypt in 1925, and the laws were for people
in the US, I saw several similarities on the events that took place. Evelyn was incredibly careful
with what she did because she knew that the artifacts they found were of great value for the people
of the dessert that protected Hamunaptra, but that didn't stop Evelyn and her team from opening up
the sarcophagus and studying the mummy that was in it. Just like what happened to the native
Americans, archaeologist were prohibited to dig up native ancestors because of their families who
felt like it was disrespecting the dead and that is why they came up with the American Graves

Indiana Jones Summary
What surprised me most about this documentary was that as a child I had just assumed that the
sporadic and fantastical adventures of Indiana Jones were fiction in their entirety. I never would
have been able to guess that many parts of his adventures mirrored the lives of real–life
archeologists. What was most interesting about learning about the way Indiana Jones and modern
day archeologists share some of the same adventures was the way they spoke about it so practically.
The endless insects, the illnesses, the natives and rivalries, it was all like hearing this grand
adventure become real–life. It was fascinating having this idea of archeology being a somewhat
mild and monotonous career flipped around to realize that archeology is really

Character Analysis: Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Assignment 4
In Raiders of the Lost Ark, who is the protagonist? Why? (1 point)
The protagonist in Raiders of the Lost Ark is the crusader, Indiana Jones. He is the character who
drives the story forward as he pursues his objective. Throughout his journey to find the Ark he is
confronted with various obstacles that threaten his mission including as snakes, convincing Marion
to help him find the medallion, and taking the Ark back from the Nazi's.
What is the protagonist's objective? (1 point)
Indy is on a mission to find the Ark. His primary objective is to first find the Staff of Ra, then he
must use the staff to see the location of the Ark to prevent the Nazi's from being able to use its
power as a weapon.

he is retrieving the ark and comes across the chamber full of snakes. Knowing he is afraid of snakes
already due to the earlier scene adds drama to what we might otherwise dismiss because Indy seems

Like the fathers of classic boys' stories, Dr. Jones is not a parent so much as a grown–up ally, an
older pal who lacks three dimensions because children are unable to see their parents in that
complexity. I kept being reminded of the father in the Hardy Boys books, who shook his head and
smiled at the exploits of his lovable lads and only rarely "expressed concern" or "cautioned them
sternly." Since the Hardy Boys were constantly involved, at a tender age, with an endless series of
counterfeiters, car thieves, kidnap rings, Nazi spies and jewel thieves, their father's detachment
seemed either saintly or mad – and Connery has fun with some of the same elements. Harrison Ford
is Indiana Jones again this time, and what he does seems so easy, so deadpan, that few other actors
could maintain such a straight and credible presence in the midst of such chaos. After young Indy
discovers his life's mission in the early scenes, the central story takes place years later, when Dr.
Jones (the world's leading expert on the Holy Grail) is kidnapped by desperados who are convinced
he knows the secret of where it is now hidden. He does. And Indy, working from his father's
notebook, follows a trail from America to the watery catacombs beneath Venice, and then to the

armored tank. He is accompanied on his mission

Theme Of Mise En Scene Of Indiana Jones
In the film "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" directed by Steven Spielberg, elements
of mise en scene and cinematography are utilized narrative form to progress the story of Indiana

In this element of mise en scene the scene is directed to have a certain type of emotional appeal and

the score is low and sharp giving a sense of malevolence and suspense as Indy must knowingly
descend into the abyss of snakes. The effect the violin makes on the audience simply enhansis the
sense of danger that flows through the scene accompanied with the enhanced sensitivity to the
snake's hissing, and slithering making them seem more menacing but the audience can feel
sympathy for Indy when he says, "why did it have to be snakes."
In a nutshell, In the film "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" elements of mise en scene

Indiana Jones: An American Romantic Hero
When we visualize a Romantic Hero we think of love, or a paradigmatic hero such as a Disney hero,
or Prince Charming riding on his horse to save the princess. In fact, most believe that a Romantic
Hero's main intent is love. Consequently, they do not strive for love, they actually fear
domestication; however, this undesirable interest is often a reward for the Hero at the end. Romantic
writers are considered Romantic because they emphasized emotion, nature, and individualism. An
American Romantic Hero is purer in motivation, they pursue the thrills from an adventure instead of
compensation, compared to a European Romantic Hero. According to a textbook, a Romantic Hero
has numerous qualifications required before they're considered an American Romantic Hero. For
example, it is a general fact that the Hero must ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It seems that every trait and quality, an American Romantic Hero is not, are character traits or
qualities that exemplify the Hero is morally pure. Clearly, an American Romantic Hero does not
seek a reward. Consistently, in the movie, Indiana Jones, Jones stresses "...it belongs in a museum."
This shows he wants to donate his findings to the public, and that he is not searching for money or
recognition. American Romantic heroes don't seek rewards, such as the brave Moana. Instantly,
when Moana figures out her island and people are in danger, she leaves, putting her own life in
danger. Additionally, Marlin from Finding Nemo goes on an adventure as does every American
Romantic Hero, but on his adventure, he looks for his son. Throughout his journey he changed, as
do most Romantic Hero on their journey. In the Disney movie Mulan, Mulan changes, she changes
her perspective and she physically changes to take her dad's place. Taking her dad's place shows she
truly cares about her dad. Every Romantic Hero has a motivation, but as we have learned from these
character traits, their motives are

Analysis Of Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Deep in the jungles of South America a man emerges from the shadows, a gun is drawn, and the
hammer clicks back. Before the gun clears the holster, another man whose identity is concealed by
shadow and the wide brim of a Fedora has already drawn his own weapon, a whip. With a crack like
thunder the whip strikes the gun and it falls to the ground, Indiana Jones emerges from the shadows
with a smile on his face. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is an action movie that was
produced by Steven Spielberg in 1981. The film follows the adventures of Indiana Jones as he
attempts to find the Ark of the Covenant before it falls under Nazi control. The first scene of Indiana
Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark introduces two main characters, Indiana Jones and Dr. Rene
Belloq. Throughout the film these two characters compete to acquire the Ark of the Covenant, their
actions all leading towards the final scene where only one man achieves this goal. Steven Spielberg
uses techniques such as framing, visual effects, and lighting in the first and last scenes of the movie
to develop the classic hero and villain archetypes for Dr. Jones and Dr. Belloq respectively. Steven
Spielberg begins Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark in medias res, meaning that the
movie starts in the middle of action. Beginning in media res, the opening scene shows Indiana Jones
on an expedition in South America to retrieve a golden idol. As a result of choosing to begin the film

Summary Of Independent Reading Reflection
Independent Reading Reflections #1– Quote: "He had no idea what he was. Half of something, a
quarter of something else, brown skin and black hair like his dead mother, but with weird blue eyes
like his father." Response: This is important to the development of the story because it gives us
descriptions as to what he looks like, so we can better visualize the character as the plot progresses.
It also describes a little bit of what his father looks like and what his dead mother used to look like.
Questions: How did his mother die? How could his race effect the story? #2– Quote: "Wherever the
huge ships lay, scavenge gangs like nailer's swarmed like flies." Response: This is important
because it gives us (the reader) much needed background information to better visualize and
understand the story. Most likely, his job will play a key role in both the story as it developes, and
Nailer's (the main character) development as a person. Questions: Why are there ships everywhere?
When does this take place? (Future?) #3– Quote: "If he'd thought about it too much, he didn't know
why he saved his father either. It's not as if Richard Lopez has made his life any easier." Response: I
wonder if his father really does love him, but uses the booze to hide behind his conflicted emotions
about losing his wife. This is a similar relationship in the Outsiders between Ponyboy, and his
brother Darry. Ponyboy can't tell if Darry loves him or not, because he is always hiding his emotions
from Ponyboy, for he is so hurt from his mother's and father's death. Maybe Nailer had a similar
thought and that's why he chose to save his dad. Questions: How will his dad change throughout the
story if any? How will Nailer change throughout the story? #4– Quote: "They were all looking at the
water now. Hungry. "You think they even know were here?" Moon girl asked. Pima spat in the sand.
"Were just flies on garbage to people like that." Response: This quote reminds me a lot of the book
"The Outsiders" due to the large social gap between poor people and rich people. In this quote, a
Clipper Ship (expensive ship for rich people) is sailing across the water, as the three main characters
watch. One of the characters

The Adventure Of Indiana Jones
The theme of the film would be the plot or the character of the film and series. I think this because
there's a lot happens which would make the theme about plot or character. For Plot, they have all the
action and the interesting things that happen throughout the movies of The adventures of Indiana
Jones. He would seek lost relics and ancient artifacts that can be way too powerful for humanity to
manipulate. Such as the nazis try to use the artifacts to their own greedy reasons. These things
would fit for the theme plot. But it can also be character. Indiana Jones is an archaeologist that seeks
many artifacts and relics. Yet some of those relics can change the future of humanity or potentially
destroy everything. Throughout the movies, Indiana

Indiana Jones Raiders Of The Lost Ark
The theme of this film is all about discoveries. Throughout most of the movie, the main protagonist
Indiana Jones is getting or looking for treasure. At the beginning of the movie Indiana Jones was
first getting this golden skull looking this but he got it stolen from himself. More later in the movie
Jones then starts to look for the lost ark which is something that is not supposed to be discovered by

Community As A Community : The Influence Of My Community
I wouldn't really say my community as a whole has an impact on me as a person but people in
around me have had a huge impact on me for who I am today. The people who have the biggest
impact on me is defiantly my family and friends, I have done so many things with them that made
me the person who I am today.
First you probably need to know a little bit about me, I love watching sports mostly just football and
basketball, I like playing video and I love watching movies especially from the 80s, for example
some of my favorites are the back to the future trilogy, the first three Indiana jones movies, Ferris
Buller's day off and the Breakfast club, just to name a few. I remember the first time I watched all
those movies. I remember me, my dad and my brother went to blockbuster and we rented the
Indiana jones movies, the first time I seen them I was terrified, then in grade eight me and a few
friends had a movie marathon and watched all of them at once, we also did a star wars, lord of the
rings, and Rocky movie marathon. The first time I watched the breakfast club and Ferris Buller's
day of I was in my basement with my brother. I know that sounds like it has nothing to do with me
and who I am as a person but I love watching movies and watching those kind of started my love of

I really liked and still do like playing video games but they didn't really make me the person I am

Essay on The American Hero
The American Hero
Every child has fantasy's of being a super hero and leaping tall buildings in a single bound or staring
death in the face everyday and somehow finding a way to escape. All of these imaginative thoughts
have been derived from the past literary works by the great writers of the early American literary
period. These early writers entered society into a world of action and adventure, where one can see
spectacular events unfolding through the eyes of a notorious man of courage and feel as though they
are defending there country or saving the woman they love. Though the modern heroes are much
more popular than classic American heroes, the modern hero has rooted from these same literary

While no one will confuse Raiders with Schindler's List, the portrayal of the Nazis, and especially
of the French archeologist Bolloq, are not nearly as two dimensional as many critics seem to
consider them. Instead, the Nazi's are presented from the perspective of adventure as the blocking
characters in the audience's quest for the pleasure principle, while Belloq (played to absolute
perfection by Paul Freeman) represents the darker side to what Indiana Jones himself stands for –
the acquisition of rare and ancient goods.
To match the pseudo–political nature of the good versus evil battle is a pseudo–religious plot. By
centering the story around the search for the Ark of the Covenant, the writers are able to engage the
audience in the search for a familiar artifact while still surrounding them with enough technical
sounding material that it is believable that such an important discovery could be around the corner.
The religious background is often sketchy at best, and the story that sets off the journey is grounded
very shallowly in historical fact, but it is hard to believe that a modern audience would be able to
tell the difference, or that they would really care even if they did.
While Ford clearly carries the movie, the supporting actors are definitely worth noting. Karen Allen
is a very convincing female lead, and exceptional in her ability to provide a romantic female
presence that actually moves an adventure plot along

Griza Jones : A Film Analysis Of Indiana Jones
Indiana Jones is a adventurous/action movie it has many settings in the movie and it is about an
archaeologist that is looking for a important piece of history but while he's looking for it there are
bad men also trying to find it before him. This movie has many pros and cons but all together the
movie was pretty good and I would definitely watch it again. There are many ways to rate a movie
and there are many focuses to look on which many everyday people dont mind. I am going to use
these five elements to help and understand the movie; narrative, cinematography, sound, mise–en–
scene, and editing, these will help me understand and look at this movie in many different
perspectives. Breaking down a movie into these components allows you to look into depth and
seeing the true meaning of journalism. First element I am going to go into is the Narrative, Indiana
Jones had an amazing narrative the events followed up to the conclusion very well and this allowed
the movie to flow perfectly going from place to place. The way this was wrote it was very good
because during the movie there needed to be a lot of setting changes and the story helped it by doing
that. Another thing was the characters itself were amazing they all played their role as they were
supposed too but there was one character and I feel that didn't play his role as it was probably made
and he gave off an awkward feeling. The storyline gave off the action/adventure vibe and it was a

Lastly, a large amount of technology and machinery, such as a butane lighter, were used within the

Analysis Of The Movie ' The Raiders Of The Lost Ark '
For my final paper, I will analyze a piece of music that is really well–known in the cinematic
industry. Indiana Jones is a movie that came out in 1981, George Lucas, wanted to create a character
that inspire young generations to go in adventures and homage heroes. He knew that a great movie
need a well–known composer, John Williams became one of the most popular orchestral composer
in America. He had won three Golden Globes awards, five Academy Awards, 17 Grammys and five
BAFTA awards from Television Arts. One of the most famous movements that he composed for
important movies are for, Jurassic Park, Jaws, E.T, Indiana Jones and of course the original
soundtrack of Star Wars, that he completely transformed the songs into movie icons in the American
culture.
John Williams' song " The Raiders of the Lost Ark" is played by an orchestra, and today
I will talk about the melody, rhythm and the instruments that Williams incorporated to his piece of
art. Listening to the famous theme of Indiana Jones we can easily recognize and associate the
bullwhip and the fedora that became great icons to the movie, the music added to the movie was a
crucial and important factor that gave Indiana Jones a character and heroic traits. The instruments
used for the song were, strings, winds and percussions. His theme for Indiana Jones was divided
into three different sections that gave suspense and heroic feeling to the scenes. To begin analysis,
the theme is separated into a three–parts, ABA

Humor In Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
When we think of the genre comedy, our immediate thought is usually movies that generate gales of
laughter such as Airplane (1980) and The Naked Gun (1988) or great performances by comedians
like Charlie Chaplin and Steve Carell. Yet, humor can make its presence felt in movies that are not
archetypally included in the genre of comedy. In this essay, I will shed light on the use of comedic
elements in one such movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). I will begin by citing
specific examples from the movie, with references to the three theories of humor. Subsequently, I
will discuss how humor impacts the implicit meaning of the film.

The Portrayal Of Archaeology In Indiana Jones Fox
Archaeology in the media is portrayed as very high risk and thrilling. Not to diminish the
excitement of archeology, but the portrayal of archeology in movies is extremely exaggerated and
far from accurate. In Indiana Jones Indy is often plagued by so many forces that try to set him back
from his archaeological goals. He faces looters, booby traps, destructive weather, etc...
Looters, while they are a very real problem and threat to the modern search for lost history are
depicted as bloodthirsty evil individuals on a self serving mission for power and wealth. I think that
we as a society can agree that looting is wrong and that it is a selfish practice that diminishes the
knowledge and value of our history as a whole. But looters are not usually what they are made out
to be in the film. More often than not, looters are underprivileged people that loot to support their
family. Many times they are misguided and/or ignorant to their actions consequences. They are not
getting rich from their finds, and are not innit to get wealthy and power. It is a sad cycle in reality
that often starts with young children. Many times groups of children would loot during the day to
pass time or make some money, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the film the archaeologists seem to just be running rampant. Everything is very fast paced and
thrilling; they are constantly involved in chases and fights through the local towns. In reality this is
rare if not non–existent. Archaeologists are not only tasked with uncovering the past but additionally
must tread carefully around locals. They should disturb the community as little as possible and often
have positive interactions with them. A good example of this is how Dr. Morag helped to educate
children in the middle east about the consequences of looting ancient

Raiders Of The Lost Ark Film Analysis Essay
Raiders of the Lost Ark The film Raiders of the Lost Ark was directed by Steven Spielberg in 1981.
It is the first film in a series of films that follow the adventures of archaeologist and professor
Indiana Jones. Some proclaim the Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the best action/adventure movies
of all time. Since its release, the film has grossed $389 million worldwide and is ranked #40 on the
top rated movies list on IMDB.
Mise–en–Scene:
Raiders of the lost Ark takes place in 1936. When comes down to the settings, lighting, music,
costumes and the way everyone acts in this film, everything works together to get an overall feel
that the time really is the 1936. The costumes look like outfits people would really wear during that
time and the music sounds right for that era.
In the very beginning of the film, viewers see Indiana Jones walking through the jungle with some
men. Although his face is not shown for the first couple of minutes you can tell that the man in the
fedora is an important character. It's never specifically mentioned that it is a jungle but there are
animal noises and plants in the background. Also, the lighting looks natural almost as if the sun is
shining through a thick canopy of trees. All the men look a little tired and their faces and clothes
look dirty. From the way the music sounds and the way they all look you can tell that they are on
some kind of quest, searching for something for what seems like a while.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (Steven Spielberg, USA 1981) Essay
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Steven Spielberg, USA 1981) Harrison Ford stars in the film Raiders of the
Lost Ark as a character called Indiana Jones. The opening sequence has left Indiana's character
mysterious to the audience but throughout this sequence we understand his character as bold, cool,
calm and a collected leader, but as the sequence develops and the scene changes we see another side
to Indiana, an intellectual man who dresses smartly and doesn't seem cool anymore. From the
opening sequence we know that this film is an action/adventure because it is packed with
excitement, violence and close encounters with death. The mise en scene or what the audience see
and hear plays an important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The positioning of the characters is important because they are in a line one behind another this
shows the leader of the group is at the front and therefore the most important. As they get deeper
into the jungle it is noticeable the screen changes from wide screen to take up the entire screen this
is done to make the audience feel that they are getting deeper into the jungle. Shafts of sunlight
through trees are used to make their adventure mysterious and because little light is used it makes it
dark and shadowy to make the characters more heroic. As they are walking through the jungle there
are noticeable difference between the three characters, the leader is wearing a leather jacket, a hat
and is wearing a whip whereas the two people following have rather worn down shabby clothes and
are carrying lots of equipment. This makes Indiana look as if he knows what he is doing whereas the
porters seem as if they didn't want to come and aren't prepared. This is also reflected in their body
language, Indiana seems tough and courageous whereas the porters seem nervous and anxious. The
fact that Indiana isn't carrying anything whereas the porters are carrying lots of tools suggest two
things that Indiana is the leader and perhaps he has hired them which suggests he is well off.

Analysis Of The Documentary ' Nigel Morris ' Empire Of Light
Nigel Morris' Empire of Light offers numerous criticisms of Spielberg's Indiana Jones series. His
conclusions draw on the subconscious biases of the film with topics ranging from American
imperialism, anti–feminism, and the "white man's burden". Morris argues the hero – the white,
American, and masculine Jones – is inseparable from these identities (pg. 77). While he makes
interesting points about the role of Marion and other characters in relation to Jones to support this
argument, as he acknowledges, Spielberg has contended, "it is only a movie". Morris rejects this
claim by insisting, "an analogous process... occurs during viewing, the result of alignment with
inscribed spectators and with the filmmakers through recognized intertextuality" (pg. 80). He
dismisses Spielberg's counterargument as a simple cliché and claims that viewers will be hit with
subtle ideological biases when they are most vulnerable. He makes valid points about the American
idealism that Indiana Jones represents and the stereotypical foreign nations which hosts his exotic
escapades, but at the same time he neglects many scenes across the films that show a deeper side of
the action hero. Both Raiders of the Lost Arc and Temple of Doom contain examples that contradict
the narrative and demonstrates a more complex film.
Indiana Jones is primarily based of the serials of the 1930's which were overrun by stereotypes of
women and foreigners. They depicted an almost senseless violence where the white male hero

Indiana Jones Movie My Favorite Movies
The Indiana Jones series is one of the most loved and hated series ever made. "The Raiders of the

The overall plot of the Indiana Jones trilogy is when Indiana Jones finds these amazing old artifact,
someone always comes and tries to stop him from taking it. Also the nazis are the main people that

most powerful army ever. The main characters of the Indiana Jones series are Indiana Jones, Marion

Jones. In the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" Indiana Jones tries to find and recover the Ark of the

The Raiders March Meaning
"The Raiders March" This piece begins with a four–bar introduction played by the low brass and
timpani. This part consists of a highly–articulated, staccato two–bar ostinato. As one would expect
from a march, this piece is in duple meter. A pickup by the trumpets leads into the A melody (0:07) .
During this section, the trumpets play the melody in monophony while the low brass and timpani
continue their ostinato. It then becomes apparent that this song is in a major key. After six bars,
where extra brass is added under the trumpets to give the melody harmony (0:18). This two–bar part
becomes the climax of this section, as this is where the melodic shape hits its peak. The 8–bar A
melody is then repeated a second time, but with high woodwinds joining the low brass and timpani
ostinato (0:22). The rest of the section is otherwise played the same as the previous repetition, with
the woodwinds sharing the trumpets' melody in the last two bars (0:33). Afterwards, a pickup by the
string section leads into an 8–bar B melody (0:36). The rest of the ensemble ... Show more content

third repetition of the A melody, one can more clearly hear the xylophone accompanying the melody
here than in "The Raiders March". The piece begins to differ more significantly after the break
following the third repetition of the A melody when the piece modulates down a half step instead of
up like in the original (1:37). This fourth instance of the A melody is otherwise played the same as
in "The Raiders March" until the last two bars, where it immediately jumps into what was the coda

Comparison Of Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull And The Matrix
After watching and analyzing the action adventure film, Indiana Jones – "Kingdom of the Crystal
Skull" (2008) and the Sci–Fi thriller, The Matrix (1999) many cinematic elements attracted my
attention. With three very distinct and ingenious directors, (Spielberg and the Wachowskis siblings)
these two films exemplified extraordinary uses of lighting, framing, editing and sound techniques
unique to its own genre.
Lighting
Foremost, in terms of lighting Indiana Jones – Kingdom of the Crystal Skull does a great job of
using lighting as a symbolism for the iconic "Indiana Jones" theme that viewers have become
accustomed to. The last time viewers saw the adventurous archeologist Indiana Jones (Harrison
Ford), he was riding off into the sunset at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being that both the Crystal Skull and The Matrix are arguably adventurous films, they both had
nondiegetic sound elements – music. For instance, during clips that illustrated the antagonist ( Agent
Smith and the Russian soldiers) both films maintained suspenseful music selections. In times of car
chases, shooting scenes and other upbeat shots, the music got very exciting, pulsating and alluring.
However, due to the fact that The Matrix (1999) was the first film debuted in its series, its sound
patterns were relatively new to audiences. Whereas in the Crystal Skull, viewers are hit with the
familiar Indiana Jones jingle throughout the film. All these non–literal sounds were not coming from
a particular source or conveyed literal meaning, they just intensified the scenes. On the other hand,
in the Crystal Skull viewers also receive a lot of diegetic sounds especially while in the jungle. One
of my favorites is the creepy, hissing and crawling sounds audience members hear coming from the
ants as they take over the screen. This successfully does a great job of connecting viewers with the
actions on screen and undoubtedly makes them cringe and shake as the ants swarm and consume the
Russian soldier. Moreover, we get another diegetic sound coming from a snake when Jones is
trapped in the quick sand. I found this scene to be interesting because it yet again symbolized the
"Indiana Jones" theme. Indiana Jones is knowingly scared of snakes so hearing the hissing sound
immediately frightens him and connects viewers with his long–loved character. On the other hand,
in The Matrix ambient sounds were heavily used especially in the "real world." While on the ship
viewers hear the destruction and thrilling sounds coming from the robots and machines in the
atmosphere. The same technique is used once characters travel into the Matrix and the
environmental sounds transform from machines to

Indiana Jones Raiders Of The Lost Ark Analysis
Indiana Jones Reflection After watching Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark, it is clear that
Indiana Jones is not a true archaeologist, but a combination of a grave digger and archeologist. As a
result of this portrayal this movie does not do the best job of demonstrating what archaeology really
is. This is not to say that Hollywood got everything wrong in regards to archaeology. As a matter of
fact, while this movie is highly exaggerated and fictional, it does capture a lot of elements and
factual things that does take place in archaeology both in modern times and back in 1938. In terms
of what is archaeology, Indiana Jones does touch on the basic principles of archaeology, but it does

process. Of course a blockbuster movie cannot spend two hours dissecting someone conducting

bit more thoroughly. The only time spent on this idea was when they showed Indiana Jones teaching

Indiana Jones Research Paper

  • 1. Indiana Jones Research Paper There is a reason that Indiana Jones does not like snakes. They are dangerous. That being said, it is rare, to be bitten by a snake and die from it; at least when compared to dying of auto accident, cancer, or heart disease. Some snakes have venom, but it is not deadly Some do not have any venom at all, but it is the way the snake wraps itself around you and tightens its grip until it kills you. Tropical areas are the best place to find a lot of these snakes. Here is my top ten list of the most dangerous snake species in the world. 10. Copperhead A moderately sized snake, less than three feet long on average, some can get up to four feet. The copperhead weighs anywhere from eight to twelve ounces. The venom is fairly painful. Hides itself ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They can get set to strike, strike and back to its strike position in less than .15 seconds. The venom per bite can be as little as seventy milligrams and as high as 236 milligrams. They hide in wait, when they hear humans coming, to strike; this increases their risk of being stepped on, but they are much more dangerous to strike. 8. Cottonmouth Also referred to as the water moccasin, the bite is more harmful and deadly than that of the copperhead, but does not lead to death. That much, anyway. It is more aggressive than the copperhead, but only bites when it is touched. More aggressive reputation and strikes a ready to bite pose. The snake can get up to six feet long. 7. Common krait Often considered India's most dangerous snake. The venom contains highly powerful neurotoxins which cause the muscles to become paralyzed. It has two kinds of neurotoxins (postsynaptic and presynaptic) that usually affect the nerve endings located close to the synaptic cleft of the brain. 6. Inland Taipan This snake has the most venom, more than any other snake in the world. If left untreated, the death rate from a bite from this snake is eighty percent. That being said, this snake does not usually bite, is actually easy going, and stays away from confrontation. 5. Saw Scaled ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. What Is The Purpose Of Raiders Of The Lost Ark This movie was directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by George Lucas and the actors were: Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, Paul Freeman, Dennolm Elliot and John Rhys–Davis. Running time: 1:55 min This film is rated PG Fantasy/action This action filled, heart pounding movie is and amazing film which follows a professor of archeology all over the world on a very important quest. Raiders of the Lost Ark was a suspenseful and mysterious movie that jumped from cliffhanger to cliffhanger so at each turn everyone would wonder what just happened. Adults, teenagers and anyone in between will have their mouths agape as they follow a new and very daring character from the jungle to the desert as he searches for something that has never been found before. ... • 3. The Ark Motif In Raiders Of The Lost Ark As well as these two themes, there are also a handful of leitmotifs used throughout Raiders of the Lost Ark, one of the most important being the Ark leitmotif. This motif is created with low rumbling noises from the cello and low brass, mixing with trumpets and higher trilling strings. This creates a majestic and mysterious sound that also sends shivers down your back to insinuate the amazing power that God has put into The Ark of the Covenant. This Ark motif is first introduced when Indiana Jones presents a picture of the Ark to government officials when speaking to them about the quest for the Ark. Like "Marion's Theme", the Ark leitmotif gradually grows, adding more instruments and lengthening the piece every time it is introduced, but still keeping the same basic concept. Another leitmotif in this score is known as the Nazi leitmotif. However, this leitmotif is unlike the Ark motif in the fact that it is very subtle. So subtle that some may not even consider it a motif. This leitmotif is made from using low brass instruments such as trombones, baritones, euphoniums, trumpets, and even incorporating some percussion. It is argued that this is not a leitmotif because every time it is reintroduced, it sounds nothing like the time before. However, these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is first used when Indiana Jones and the first Nazi Mechanic get into a fist fight. There is a sequence of five swings between Indiana Jones and the Nazi where a high trumpet and piccolo are used to accompany each swing. A second instance mickey mousing is used is very similar to the first one, except the first Nazi mechanic is now replaced by the second one. Once again mickey mousing is used with each punch that is thrown. As one can see, the most prominent mickey mousing is only used when punches are thrown between Indiana Jones and the Nazis, however this whole scene is a fight scene so it is fairly ... Comparing The Opening Scene In Raiders Of The Lost Ark and Tomorrow Never Dies 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and 'Tomorrow Never Dies' are both action films with a similar theme. Both films are about good fighting evil. The heroes have many similarities and differences. 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' is targeted at any age, its certificate PG. 'Tomorrow Never Dies' is targeted at twelve years onwards and is a certificate 12. Both films may appeal more to teenage males who may look up to Indiana Jones and James Bond because they are good looking men who have exciting, action filled jobs and they want to be like them. Both films are blockbusters so they have big budgets. The 'Raiders' film begins in South ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He has an unshaven face and wears rugged bush gear. Jones and his other tracker continue on their mission. When they enter the tomb the screen widens making the tombs seem narrow. The camera concentrates on Jones's feet, and follows him through the tomb making the viewer feel involved. They are soon aware that they have tarantulas attached to their backs, a high–pitched music starts to play, which sounds like creepy crawlies, and it makes the viewer panic. Jones warned his tracker to stay out of the light; this shows us he has experience. They come to a deep hole, there is a camera shot from the bottom of the drop, which make the audience realise how dangerous it is, they manage to get over it. They are standing about ten feet from the Idol, and Jones has to control his excited companion. Indiana goes forward alone, he was calm about the situation, and knew all the traps. The music starts to crescendo building up tension during the scene. Jones swapped the Idol for a bag of sand. This shows us he was prepared. The music stopped, making us feel suspense. The rocks start crumbling down, the viewers feel urgency. • 5. Indiana Jones Archaeology After rewatching Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark for the second time I view Indiana Jones as less of an archaeologist than I did the first time I watched it. In my first paper I stated that Indiana Jones was a combination of a grave digger and an archaeologist. Now after completing this course I see that he is even less of an archaeologist than I first depicted. The only ethical archaeology being conducted in this movie is done by the Nazi's; not Indiana Jones. Beyond, getting historical accuracy of the time period correct this movie fails fails to paint a picture of what archaeology truly is. In turn, since my knowledge is far more comprehensive I have come to realize that the movie fails to showcase archaeology even more than I originally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, this isn't Indiana Jones conducting archaeology properly, but rather the Nazi's. When Indiana Jones came to the lost city of Tanis, the Nazi's were having the Egyptian site excavated by hundreds of people. This site had to have been properly funded and to have used a survey strategy as they were very close to the location as a result of proper research and clues from the medallion. Their site featured camp sites, carts, and variety of digging tools. In the brief depiction of the site it looked like the Nazi's used vertical excavation as they have dug a substantial way into the ground in order to try and recover the ark. In terms of tools I noticed they were only using shovels, and then using baskets to clean up the dirt. The one thing that I did notice that was not an accurate portrayal was how people were digging. They were digging with large shovels and digging out large scoops of dirt in the process. In reality, archaeologists tend to use smaller tools to look for artifacts and be much more precise with their digs. However, this may have been the case since they seemed to be only looking for the ark. A true archaeological dig would have paid attention to the small pieces of pottery and other small artifacts that would have been on site, looking to document the past rather to just find one piece of treasure. Lastly, the lost city of Tanis looks like it was a State based on the labor investment of the monument to keep the lost ark a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Indiana Jones And The Last Cadesade Essay Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is an epic movie. Joseph Campbell created "The Hero's Journey" model. This model helps to characterize a specific piece of literature as an epic. It is a pattern of narrative. It explains the typical adventure of the Hero. The Hero achieves great deeds on behalf of the group. It helps a person dissect a piece of literature, a movie in this case, and learn about all the different parts. If the piece of literature fits into every part, then it classifies as an epic. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade fulfills each part of this model. The 1989 movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, written by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg, meets all the criteria outline by Campbell in his "Hero's Journey" ... The true Grail is wooden and worthy of a humble carpenter. Then, he uses the Grail to heal his father. The Grail helped them get to the point at which their relationship is renewed. The quest was successfully achieved, but there is one problem: The Grail can't come back with them. The knight warned them that the Grail could not go past the Great Seal. They have to leave it there in the temple, because it can't leave its "magical world". Despite the warning, Elsa tries to leave with the Grail. The temple starts to shake and fall to pieces. The Grail slips into the crevasse. Elsa goes after it and Indiana tries to hold on to her, but she falls. Then, Indiana tries to get it, and Henry holds on to him. He tried so hard to stretch and reach the Grail, but he could not. His father pulls him back. He says, "Indiana, let it go." ( Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). That was the first time he did not call him Junior. Indiana did not want to give up, because he wanted to complete his fathers dream of getting the Grail. By Henry saying to let it go, it showed that Indiana is more important to him than the Cup of Christ. The Crossing of the Return Threshold is the final exit. It is when Henry and Indiana finally leave the doorway of the temple. Indiana learns to master both worlds. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Indiana Jones: A Career In Archaeology Perhaps the most simultaneously educational, thrilling and philanthropic career in the field of geography is that of an archaeologist. As a student of human history and an explorer of ancient culture, archaeologists ultimately uncover the history of mankind for global consumption and benefit. When compared, the above–average pay, frequent travel and relative job stability outweigh the limited job prospects and on–the–job dangers, making archaeology one of, if not, the top career choice(s) in the field of geography. Despite Indiana Jones making archaeology out to be nothing more than leather, bullwhips and paranormal activity, it – archaeology – is actually a noble career, fit for the best of the best. In addition to excavating ancient artifacts, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Archaeology is far from a cushy office job; most of the work is physically gruelling and may require relocation to remote areas for extended periods of time, leaving archaeologists at risk for countless foreign diseases and parasites. In addition to the physical risks, archaeologists accrue a significant amount of debt, as they are required to, at least, earn a bachelor's degree and, subsequently, spend thousands of dollars that they may not have on post–secondary education. Debt, malaria and maggots aside, a job in archaeology practically guarantees international travel, with the added bonus of being paid for it. Perhaps the best way to work in archaeology is with a cultural resource management firm, as most archaeologists today are, likely because they enable the warm, self– aggrandizing feeling that accompanies the knowledge that a piece of history was just preserved and made available to the public. The risks taken to preserve these pieces of history are always fully calculated and minimized but in the event that the unfortunate does occur, archaeologists merely tap into the plethora of benefits bestowed upon them – a 401k plan, a medical, dental and vision plan, life insurance and paid holiday – and re–calibrate their lives. Indiana Jones Summary What surprised me most about this documentary was that as a child I had just assumed that the sporadic and fantastical adventures of Indiana Jones were fiction in their entirety. I never would have been able to guess that many parts of his adventures mirrored the lives of real–life archeologists. What was most interesting about learning about the way Indiana Jones and modern day archeologists share some of the same adventures was the way they spoke about it so practically. The endless insects, the illnesses, the natives and rivalries, it was all like hearing this grand adventure become real–life. Like the fathers of classic boys' stories, Dr. Jones is not a parent so much as a grown–up ally, an older pal who lacks three dimensions because children are unable to see their parents in that complexity. I kept being reminded of the father in the Hardy Boys books, who shook his head and smiled at the exploits of his lovable lads and only rarely "expressed concern" or "cautioned them sternly." Since the Hardy Boys were constantly involved, at a tender age, with an endless series of counterfeiters, car thieves, kidnap rings, Nazi spies and jewel thieves, their father's detachment seemed either saintly or mad – and Connery has fun with some of the same elements. Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones again this time, and what he does seems so easy, so deadpan, that few other actors could maintain such a straight and credible presence in the midst of such chaos. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is an action movie that was produced by Steven Spielberg in 1981. The film follows the adventures of Indiana Jones as he attempts to find the Ark of the Covenant before it falls under Nazi control. The first scene of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark introduces two main characters, Indiana Jones and Dr. Rene Belloq. Throughout the film these two characters compete to acquire the Ark of the Covenant, their actions all leading towards the final scene where only one man achieves this goal. Half of something, a quarter of something else, brown skin and black hair like his dead mother, but with weird blue eyes like his father." Response: This is important to the development of the story because it gives us descriptions as to what he looks like, so we can better visualize the character as the plot progresses. It also describes a little bit of what his father looks like and what his dead mother used to look like. Questions: How did his mother die? How could his race effect the story? #2– Quote: "Wherever the huge ships lay, scavenge gangs like nailer's swarmed like flies." Response: This is important because it gives us (the reader) much needed background information to better visualize and understand the story. Most likely, his job will play a key role in both the story as it developes, and Nailer's (the main character) development as a person. Questions: Why are there ships everywhere? When does this take place? (Future?) #3– Quote: "If he'd thought about it too much, he didn't know why he saved his father either. It's not as if Richard Lopez has made his life any easier." Response: I wonder if his father really does love him, but uses the booze to hide behind his conflicted emotions about losing his wife. This is a similar relationship in the Outsiders between Ponyboy, and his brother Darry. Ponyboy can't tell if Darry loves him or not, because he is always hiding his emotions from Ponyboy, for he is so hurt from his mother's and father's death. Maybe Nailer had a similar thought and that's why he chose to save his dad. Questions: How will his dad change throughout the story if any? How will Nailer change throughout the story? #4– Quote: "They were all looking at the water now. Hungry. "You think they even know were here?" Moon girl asked. Pima spat in the sand. "Were just flies on garbage to people like that." Response: This quote reminds me a lot of the book "The Outsiders" due to the large social gap between poor people and rich people. While no one will confuse Raiders with Schindler's List, the portrayal of the Nazis, and especially of the French archeologist Bolloq, are not nearly as two dimensional as many critics seem to consider them. Instead, the Nazi's are presented from the perspective of adventure as the blocking characters in the audience's quest for the pleasure principle, while Belloq (played to absolute perfection by Paul Freeman) represents the darker side to what Indiana Jones himself stands for – the acquisition of rare and ancient goods. To match the pseudo–political nature of the good versus evil battle is a pseudo–religious plot. By centering the story around the search for the Ark of the Covenant, the writers are able to engage the audience in the search for a familiar artifact while still surrounding them with enough technical sounding material that it is believable that such an important discovery could be around the corner. The religious background is often sketchy at best, and the story that sets off the journey is grounded very shallowly in historical fact, but it is hard to believe that a modern audience would be able to tell the difference, or that they would really care even if they did. Not to diminish the excitement of archeology, but the portrayal of archeology in movies is extremely exaggerated and far from accurate. In Indiana Jones Indy is often plagued by so many forces that try to set him back from his archaeological goals. He faces looters, booby traps, destructive weather, etc... Looters, while they are a very real problem and threat to the modern search for lost history are depicted as bloodthirsty evil individuals on a self serving mission for power and wealth. I think that we as a society can agree that looting is wrong and that it is a selfish practice that diminishes the knowledge and value of our history as a whole. But looters are not usually what they are made out to be in the film. More often than not, looters are underprivileged people that loot to support their family. Many times they are misguided and/or ignorant to their actions consequences. They are not getting rich from their finds, and are not innit to get wealthy and power. It is a sad cycle in reality that often starts with young children. Many times groups of children would loot during the day to pass time or make some money, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the film the archaeologists seem to just be running rampant. Everything is very fast paced and thrilling; they are constantly involved in chases and fights through the local towns. In reality this is rare if not non–existent. Archaeologists are not only tasked with uncovering the past but additionally must tread carefully around locals. They should disturb the community as little as possible and often have positive interactions with them. A good example of this is how Dr. Morag helped to educate children in the middle east about the consequences of looting ancient ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Raiders Of The Lost Ark Film Analysis Essay Raiders of the Lost Ark The film Raiders of the Lost Ark was directed by Steven Spielberg in 1981. It is the first film in a series of films that follow the adventures of archaeologist and professor Indiana Jones. Some proclaim the Raiders of the Lost Ark is one of the best action/adventure movies of all time. Since its release, the film has grossed $389 million worldwide and is ranked #40 on the top rated movies list on IMDB. Mise–en–Scene: Raiders of the lost Ark takes place in 1936. When comes down to the settings, lighting, music, costumes and the way everyone acts in this film, everything works together to get an overall feel that the time really is the 1936. The costumes look like outfits people would really wear during that time and the music sounds right for that era. In the very beginning of the film, viewers see Indiana Jones walking through the jungle with some men. Although his face is not shown for the first couple of minutes you can tell that the man in the fedora is an important character. It's never specifically mentioned that it is a jungle but there are animal noises and plants in the background. Also, the lighting looks natural almost as if the sun is shining through a thick canopy of trees. All the men look a little tired and their faces and clothes look dirty. From the way the music sounds and the way they all look you can tell that they are on some kind of quest, searching for something for what seems like a while. One of the best scenes in the ... • 32. Raiders of the Lost Ark (Steven Spielberg, USA 1981) Essay Raiders of the Lost Ark (Steven Spielberg, USA 1981) Harrison Ford stars in the film Raiders of the Lost Ark as a character called Indiana Jones. The opening sequence has left Indiana's character mysterious to the audience but throughout this sequence we understand his character as bold, cool, calm and a collected leader, but as the sequence develops and the scene changes we see another side to Indiana, an intellectual man who dresses smartly and doesn't seem cool anymore. From the opening sequence we know that this film is an action/adventure because it is packed with excitement, violence and close encounters with death. The mise en scene or what the audience see and hear plays an important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The positioning of the characters is important because they are in a line one behind another this shows the leader of the group is at the front and therefore the most important. As they get deeper into the jungle it is noticeable the screen changes from wide screen to take up the entire screen this is done to make the audience feel that they are getting deeper into the jungle. Shafts of sunlight through trees are used to make their adventure mysterious and because little light is used it makes it dark and shadowy to make the characters more heroic. As they are walking through the jungle there are noticeable difference between the three characters, the leader is wearing a leather jacket, a hat and is wearing a whip whereas the two people following have rather worn down shabby clothes and are carrying lots of equipment. This makes Indiana look as if he knows what he is doing whereas the porters seem as if they didn't want to come and aren't prepared. This is also reflected in their body language, Indiana seems tough and courageous whereas the porters seem nervous and anxious. The fact that Indiana isn't carrying anything whereas the porters are carrying lots of tools suggest two things that Indiana is the leader and perhaps he has hired them which suggests he is well off. • 33. Analysis Of The Documentary ' Nigel Morris ' Empire Of Light Nigel Morris' Empire of Light offers numerous criticisms of Spielberg's Indiana Jones series. His conclusions draw on the subconscious biases of the film with topics ranging from American imperialism, anti–feminism, and the "white man's burden". Morris argues the hero – the white, American, and masculine Jones – is inseparable from these identities (pg. 77). While he makes interesting points about the role of Marion and other characters in relation to Jones to support this argument, as he acknowledges, Spielberg has contended, "it is only a movie". Morris rejects this claim by insisting, "an analogous process... occurs during viewing, the result of alignment with inscribed spectators and with the filmmakers through recognized intertextuality" (pg. 80). He dismisses Spielberg's counterargument as a simple cliché and claims that viewers will be hit with subtle ideological biases when they are most vulnerable. He makes valid points about the American idealism that Indiana Jones represents and the stereotypical foreign nations which hosts his exotic escapades, but at the same time he neglects many scenes across the films that show a deeper side of the action hero. Both Raiders of the Lost Arc and Temple of Doom contain examples that contradict the narrative and demonstrates a more complex film. Indiana Jones is primarily based of the serials of the 1930's which were overrun by stereotypes of women and foreigners. They depicted an almost senseless violence where the white male hero ... • 35. The Raiders March Meaning "The Raiders March" This piece begins with a four–bar introduction played by the low brass and timpani. This part consists of a highly–articulated, staccato two–bar ostinato. As one would expect from a march, this piece is in duple meter. A pickup by the trumpets leads into the A melody (0:07) . During this section, the trumpets play the melody in monophony while the low brass and timpani continue their ostinato. It then becomes apparent that this song is in a major key. After six bars, where extra brass is added under the trumpets to give the melody harmony (0:18). This two–bar part becomes the climax of this section, as this is where the melodic shape hits its peak. The 8–bar A melody is then repeated a second time, but with high woodwinds joining the low brass and timpani ostinato (0:22). The rest of the section is otherwise played the same as the previous repetition, with the woodwinds sharing the trumpets' melody in the last two bars (0:33). Afterwards, a pickup by the string section leads into an 8–bar B melody (0:36). The rest of the ensemble ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first minute and a half of the song is played the same as that of "The Raiders March", though due to differing sound equalization, some instruments can be heard more audibly than in the original. For example, in the third repetition of the A melody, one can more clearly hear the xylophone accompanying the melody here than in "The Raiders March". The piece begins to differ more significantly after the break following the third repetition of the A melody when the piece modulates down a half step instead of up like in the original (1:37). This fourth instance of the A melody is otherwise played the same as in "The Raiders March" until the last two bars, where it immediately jumps into what was the coda of the original piece ... • 36. Comparison Of Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull And The Matrix After watching and analyzing the action adventure film, Indiana Jones – "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (2008) and the Sci–Fi thriller, The Matrix (1999) many cinematic elements attracted my attention. With three very distinct and ingenious directors, (Spielberg and the Wachowskis siblings) these two films exemplified extraordinary uses of lighting, framing, editing and sound techniques unique to its own genre. Lighting Foremost, in terms of lighting Indiana Jones – Kingdom of the Crystal Skull does a great job of using lighting as a symbolism for the iconic "Indiana Jones" theme that viewers have become accustomed to. Being that both the Crystal Skull and The Matrix are arguably adventurous films, they both had nondiegetic sound elements – music. For instance, during clips that illustrated the antagonist ( Agent Smith and the Russian soldiers) both films maintained suspenseful music selections. In times of car chases, shooting scenes and other upbeat shots, the music got very exciting, pulsating and alluring. However, due to the fact that The Matrix (1999) was the first film debuted in its series, its sound patterns were relatively new to audiences. Whereas in the Crystal Skull, viewers are hit with the familiar Indiana Jones jingle throughout the film. All these non–literal sounds were not coming from a particular source or conveyed literal meaning, they just intensified the scenes. On the other hand, in the Crystal Skull viewers also receive a lot of diegetic sounds especially while in the jungle. One of my favorites is the creepy, hissing and crawling sounds audience members hear coming from the ants as they take over the screen. This successfully does a great job of connecting viewers with the actions on screen and undoubtedly makes them cringe and shake as the ants swarm and consume the Russian soldier. Moreover, we get another diegetic sound coming from a snake when Jones is trapped in the quick sand. I found this scene to be interesting because it yet again symbolized the "Indiana Jones" theme. Indiana Jones is knowingly scared of snakes so hearing the hissing sound immediately frightens him and connects viewers with his long–loved character. On the other hand, in The Matrix ambient sounds were heavily used especially in the "real world." While on the ship viewers hear the destruction and thrilling sounds coming from the robots and machines in the atmosphere. The same technique is used once characters travel into the Matrix and the environmental sounds transform from machines to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Indiana Jones Raiders Of The Lost Ark Analysis Indiana Jones Reflection After watching Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark, it is clear that Indiana Jones is not a true archaeologist, but a combination of a grave digger and archeologist. As a result of this portrayal this movie does not do the best job of demonstrating what archaeology really is. This is not to say that Hollywood got everything wrong in regards to archaeology. As a matter of fact, while this movie is highly exaggerated and fictional, it does capture a lot of elements and factual things that does take place in archaeology both in modern times and back in 1938. In terms of what is archaeology, Indiana Jones does touch on the basic principles of archaeology, but it does fail to demonstrate what truly goes on behind the scenes of each dig before, during, and after. ... Along the same lines, the movie makes archaeology out to be some fast and rewarding process. Of course a blockbuster movie cannot spend two hours dissecting someone conducting archaeological research, but they could have emphasized the research portion of archaeology just a bit more thoroughly. The only time spent on this idea was when they showed Indiana Jones teaching a class at Marshall college. Lastly, both of Indiana Jones big discoveries in this movie were a result of research and clues. While as stated in the lecture 10% of the discoveries are clue and research related, 90% is ...
