1. Equality Act 2010 duty to be anticipatory to the
needs of disabled students (1 in 5 in the UK have a
disability, Gov UK)
2. Increasing international students
3. Commitment to widening participation for
underrepresented groups
4. Eliminate disadvantage resulting from linguistic,
educational or cultural background, learning need
or learning preference
5. Inclusive approaches encourage flexibility, variety
and active learning. EVERYONE benefits.

Quick Wins in teaching practice
Make common reasonable adjustments standard:
• Use Lecture Capture (where appropriate)
• Reading lists highlighting prioritised texts
• Glossaries of new terms
• Make some lecture/seminar content available in
advance
• Ensure language for assessment is free from
ambiguity.
Quick Wins in digital practice
• Create 'born accessible’ resources with flexible-format
eg Word document in OneDrive
• Familiarise yourself with accessibility checkers in
Microsoft Office
• Graphics and media: design for small screens
• Alt (alternative) text needs to either fully describe
images / graphics / graphs etc or labelled as
‘decorative’ if the visuals provide no significant
information.
Quick Wins in digital practice cont.
• For Word and Outlook: 12pt sans serif fonts as a
minimum.
• PowerPoint and presentations: ideally 28pt sans serif
as a minimum.
• Colour contrast: need to test we can’t SEE if it meets
the WCAG 2.1 AA standard
• Videos need closed captions, narration / script. Keep
text readable on small screens.

  • 2. Overview 1. Consider the case for change. 2. Provide an overview and update on the Inclusive Learning and Teaching Project: current priorities and implementing our Baseline Standards. 3. Discuss inclusive practice and the small changes we can all make, that benefit all of our students.

  • 5. The case for change 1. Equality Act 2010 duty to be anticipatory to the needs of disabled students (1 in 5 in the UK have a disability, Gov UK) 2. Increasing international students 3. Commitment to widening participation for underrepresented groups 4. Eliminate disadvantage resulting from linguistic, educational or cultural background, learning need or learning preference 5. Inclusive approaches encourage flexibility, variety and active learning. EVERYONE benefits.

New digital accessibility regulations (23/09/18) • Build on existing obligations under the Equality Act 2010 • Digital accessibility is a right, not a privilege • Includes websites, apps and VLEs (and content published within) • Meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable and Robust • Phased implementation starting 23/09/19

  • 13. Quick Wins in teaching practice Make common reasonable adjustments standard: • Use Lecture Capture (where appropriate) • Reading lists highlighting prioritised texts • Glossaries of new terms • Make some lecture/seminar content available in advance • Ensure language for assessment is free from ambiguity.
  • 14. Quick Wins in digital practice • Create 'born accessible’ resources with flexible-format eg Word document in OneDrive • Familiarise yourself with accessibility checkers in Microsoft Office • Graphics and media: design for small screens • Alt (alternative) text needs to either fully describe images / graphics / graphs etc or labelled as ‘decorative’ if the visuals provide no significant information.
  • 15. Quick Wins in digital practice cont. • For Word and Outlook: 12pt sans serif fonts as a minimum. • PowerPoint and presentations: ideally 28pt sans serif as a minimum. • Colour contrast: need to test we can’t SEE if it meets the WCAG 2.1 AA standard • Videos need closed captions, narration / script. Keep text readable on small screens.
