Abusive or inappropriate
language
What it is?
Making mean or hurtful comments
Telling jokes that are offensive
Cursing or using foul language
Leering or staring at others
Standing too close to people or touching them
inappropriately.
Why people use it?
 Exploring language
 Hear others doing it
 Vent or express negative feelings
 When they are excited
 To fit in socially i.e. trying to be a part of some group
 To get a strong reaction from adults.
How can you stop it?
 Finding the cause of it.
• If it is because of anger, try and
express it with the help of
appropriate language.
• If it is due to frustration, talk to
elders about the different ways of
solving the problem.
• Anger and frustration can be dealt
with by using alternative methods
o counting up to 10,
o taking deep breaths
o talking about angry feelings
o Engage in exercise or
o Use a swear jar
• If it is to fit in socially, find out
other ways to be accepted in a
particular group
 Substitute inappropriate words for those
that are not offensive like using some
funny words or words such as ‘flip’ or
‘shivers’.
 Deciding of certain consequences for self
can also be a way of stopping yourself
Remember!!
Your language defines YOU, becomes YOU!
Let’s clean it up.
What are good manners?
• Courtesy, politeness or having good manners
are all about respecting others and yourself.
• Good manners is about considering the
feelings of other people, and being the kind of
person that others will like and respect.
• "Always do to others as you would wish them
to do to you if you were in their place."
