HOW TO HANDLE PEER
PRESSURE
By Sanjeev Datta
—Phil Lester
“Be yourself. Don't worry about what
other people are thinking of you,
because they're probably feeling the
same kind of scared, horrible
feelings that everyone does.”

WHAT IS PEER PRESSURE?
Peers are the ones who encourage an
individual to change their attitudes, mindset,
behaviors, or habits to conform to those of
the influencing group of people. And the
pressure, the stress that is received by that
individual just to impress and follow the rules
of peers is ‘Peer Pressure’. Peer Pressure can
have both positive and negative effects on an
individual. Because of negative peer pressure,
one might feel like they lost their individuality.

NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF PEER PRESSURE
LOW OR NO SELF
ESTEEM
The peers usually try to make others
feel less of themselves. This would
cause a normally confident student
to feel left out and insecure without
any particular reason. The lower
self-esteem and lack of confidence
in their skills might impact the child’s
well-being.
ADDICTION OF
BAD HABITS
Drinking, smoking, drugs, and
such dangerous habits are
something one can get
addicted to because of peer
pressure. At this point, long-
term consequences do not
matter to them as long as they
feel accepted by their peers.
DOWNSLIDE OF GRADES
Teenagers want to belong to a
peer group and sometimes, they
try to fit in with the wrong one.
Under peer pressure like trying to
be like other members or not
wanting to get bullied by those
peers for getting good marks can
lead to a very bad impact on the
grades of that student.

POSITIVE EFFECTS OF PEER PRESSURE
ADVICE AND
ENCOURAGEMENT
If you are going
through stress or
are confused
over a decision,
peers can help
you decide with
the help of their
advice and
opinion.
A SENSE OF
BELONGING
If your peers are
helping you with
your studies,
pushing you harder
to do better at some
important task, and
motivating you, it
helps you to create
a sense of belonging
with your peers.
REINFORCEMENT OF
POSITIVE ATTITUDE
Having peers who
inspire you to learn
new things that
would help you in
the future, who
support you can
help in the
reinforcement of a
positive mindset to
look at life.

TALK DIRECTLY
If a peer is pressuring you and hurting
you, tell them to stop and state why or
how it is hurting you. If they don’t quit
peer pressure, you can take the next step
and talk with your school’s superiors
about this situation.

“NO” IS “NO”
It is easier said than done when
you are in front of a group that’s
been pressuring you to do wrong
things. But saying ‘no’ to something
you don’t approve of is crucial.
Until you build up the courage to
say ‘no’ to their faces, you can try
excusing yourself out of the group
by saying ‘your parents want you to
come home’ or ‘you were supposed
to meet a teacher after school’.

COMMUNICATING WITH
YOUR PARENTS
Negative peer pressure can be harmful to your
mental health as well as physical. Telling your
parents about what you face in school will
make you feel a little light and they can also
help you to handle the peer pressure by giving
you strategies on how not to let it affect you
and how to make it stop.
