The document discusses how the media product uses and develops conventions from real media products.
It summarizes how the poster was influenced by the poster for the film "Submarine," using similar bold colors and layout. For the magazine, conventions from films magazines like "Total Film" and "Empire" were used but developed by focusing on an independent magazine called "Little White Lies."
The trailer was most influenced by the films "Submarine" and "Fish Tank," using similar music, pacing, and settings, but developed by starting with fast pacing to grab attention without voiceover or titles.
Distraction is an enemy to us all nowadays. The information age has left us with an overload of stimuli, which can make focusing a major challenge.
In this presentation, we have gathered facts about focus, the most common causes for difficulty focusing, and the latest tricks for increasing focus and attention.
This task compares my previous draft of my magazine to my most recent one, outlines the changes I made, explains why I made those changes, and concludes how it will benefit my final magazine.
1. EVALUATION QUESTION 1
IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS?
2. POSTER
USE:
The first existing social realism film I thought of was
‘Submarine’ as it was quite recent and centred around Oliver,
who seems to be the same age as my main character.
‘Submarine’s poster is bold and eye-catching because it uses
primary colours and high contrast black and white. These
colours worked well together as they stood out, so I wanted to
use them in my own poster. I also really liked the layout and
composition of the landscape poster for ‘Submarine’, so I tried
mimicking this in mine.
DEVELOP:
I used Photoshop to layer the text, colours and images.
Instead of using a image overpowered with black, like
‘Submarine’s, I kept my image in colour, but increased the
constrast levels to make it bolder. As I used my original image
for my magazine, I had to change the photo for my poster.

3. MAGAZINE
USE:
For my magazine last year I researched popular
magazines and used the typical layout in my own
product. This year, when making my movie magazine,
I first thought of existing magazines like ‘Total Film’
and ‘Empire’. The layout of these magazines were
similar to the music magazines from last year. I made
up the layout with placement boxes in InDesign,
showing the overall style for these popular magazines.
DEVELOP:
Many of the magazine covers I found promoted these
well known, famous films and characters – like Harry
Potter and Batman. My trailer was of a smaller,
independent level and so wouldn’t really be on the
front cover of these famous magazines. To find a
magazine more suitable, I looked at independent
magazines like ‘Little White Lies’ instead.

4. MAGAZINE
RESEARCHING ‘LITTLE
WHITE LIES’ MAGAZINE
USE:
As well as being more realistic
and suitable for my movie
genre, ‘Little White Lies’ uses
graphical covers that would work
perfectly with my mise-en-
scene. I used their logo and
placed it the same as their real
products.
DEVELOP:
I wanted the front cover to be
drawn instead of just a photo, so
I used the photograph as a
template on Photoshop. The
colour scheme I used was the
same as my poster- Yellow, Blue
and Red. These were originally
the colours from the ‘Submarine’
promos, so I kept these colours
to be consistent with themes
and mise-en-scene.
5. TRAILER
RESEARCHING
‘SUBMARINE’
USE:
Richard Ayoade’s ‘Submarine’ was the first existing social realism/ teenage
film I researched. As it was really popular when It came out in 2010, with a
Box Office of $41,832 on the opening weekend, I thought it was the best film
to look at in relation to the genre and narrative I wanted. The film is about
Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) who is 15 years old and struggles with typical
teenage problems and relationships like with his girlfriend and parents. Even
though my own trailer is centred around friendships, I wanted my film to be
similar to this trailer and it’s narrative.
DEVELOP:
The main two things I liked about ‘Submarine’ were the pace and music. To
keep an upbeat mood throughout my trailer, I used just one song, whereas
‘Submarine’ used a few different songs. There’s a pause in between songs
so Oliver or Jordana can make an awkwardly funny comment. In my own
trailer, I cut the song so dialogue can be heard, but it is to cause the tension
and the ‘reality hit’ when my character ends her fight. I also used the style of
their title sequence as it looked different and interesting. I used slightly softer
colours, since I wanted my trailer to be easier on the eyes.
CHALLENGE:
At the beginning of the ‘Submarine’ trailer, the pace is pretty calm and the
opening shot is establishing. Whereas in my trailer, I decided to set the fast
pace straight away to grab the attention, with a quick, mid/long shot. Unlike
‘Submarine’ I didn’t want to include a voiceover, or any titles because I
wanted to use more diegetic dialogue. This challenged the form of the trailer,
as it is conventional to tell the story through audio or text.

6. TRAILER
RESEARCHING
‘FISHTANK’ USE:
‘Fish Tank’ was another social realist film with a teenage
target audience. I found that the settings this film used and
showed in the trailer, were more similar to my shooting
locations, than ‘Submarine’s settings were. The main
character, Mia, was female, alike my trailer and her ‘life’
was more relatable. Their representation were similar as
hoodies are worn by both, even though Mia wears jogging
bottoms and my main character wears jeans.
DEVELOP:
The setting of ‘Fish Tank’ didn’t show any higher classed
areas from the council estate and I wanted to base my
character in a more relatable ‘life’. By using the area I live
in and the town centre of Cheltenham, I was able to portray
this slightly higher class/fortune. This difference would also
be shown in the clothing, as jeans are worn instead of
jogging bottoms.
