Positive Leadership has been introduced in numerous organizations and it has proved itself a very effective approach, able to generate extremely positive results on people and on the key business aspects, including the financials. The present paper describes a case study carried out in an Indian design academy, where Positive Leadership was introduced into two different modules corresponding to the Foundation and final years of the Design Program. Faculty were randomly selected, and they were then supported so that they could conduct their classes according to the principles of Positive Leadership. After the implementation, the results on students (their satisfaction, learning and academic success) and on faculty were analyzed and, like in so many other spheres, Positive Leadership seems to be able to produce a clear improvement of the teaching-learning process that presents an interesting opportunity for further implementation in Higher Education.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to ascertain that various facilitators of learning such as learning culture,
climate, semantic web technology, information communication technology and knowledge management hold
importance to facilitate the flow of learning, which begins at individual-group-and ultimately at organizational
level in an organization.
Design/methodology/approach – This review paper is based on the research papers written by other authors,
who have studied the concept of learning organization, importance of conducive learning culture and climate,
impact of facilitators on the flow of learning in an enterprise. A model is developed to illustrate the impact of
the facilitators of learning on the flow of learning in an organization.
Findings – The study expresses that a conducive and harmonious learning culture and climate, web technology,
knowledge management leads to smooth flow of learning at individual-group- and organizational level. Such a
culture and climate contributes to an ethical organization, has a direct relationship with the performance of an
enterprise, learning capability and competitive advantage.
Limitations –This study is based on secondary research which has been published by reputed authors in this
field.

The human resource development model to increasing individual capabilities and social capital is used strategy learning organization. This model in short term has improved individual capability and productivity. In long term, it purposes to build the human resources that had learning culture.

This research aimed to find out the constraints occurring in the implementation of craft and entrepreneurship education. This research employed qualitative research method. The research was taken place in three schools in DKI Jakarta as the beneficiaries of entrepreneurship program grant from the government. Data was collected through interview and observation. The result of research showed the less optimum implementation of craft and entrepreneurship education. The constraints the teacher encountered in the implementation of Craft and Entrepreneurship subject were: teacher having no background of Entrepreneurship Education, No Subject Teacher Discussion (MGMP) group available and no supporting activity for Craft and Entrepreneurship subject. Therefore, this research recommended the reinforcement of entrepreneurship education learning through establishing MGMP team, teacher training, and sustainable integration of entrepreneurship subject and program.
In many schools, the vision mission just "exists" and not become a guideline especially implementation of learning. The school just execute school routine without knowing the meaning of implementation. This is unfortunate, because the vision and mission are a unique destination that covers the activity and can be utilized as the power of quality of the service organization. How is the capacity of school management in developing the vision and mission? The goal of the research is to describe and analyze the capacity of school management in developing the vision and mission. This study used a qualitative approach with case studies. Data collection methods used are interviews, observation, and study of the document/artifact. The validity of the data is done with credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. The results show that schools which establish vision and mission based on noble values of the founders have a strong base for the development.

This study reviews the current scenario of higher education in India and the need to bring about a qualitative change in Higher Educational Institutions HEIs . As HEIs have become more accountable to stakeholders, they need to be pro active in bringing change to sustain the existing international competition. The major responsibility, of bringing about this qualitative change in the HEIs, lies upon its academic leaders. However, academic leaders face a number of challenges in initiating this change. The present paper deals with the lessons learnt from the Covidpandemic towards transforming higher education institutions HEIs into learning organizations LO . The studys goal was to investigate the possibility of changing HEIs into LO.Ithad collected opinions of different stakeholders towards transforming HEIs into LO. This study had also found out the key lessons which can be learnt from the Covid pandemic. Descriptive survey research was used in this study. The population of the study consisted of all the HEIs in the state of Odisha, India. The researcher had purposefully selected four HEIs from the state of Odisha, India, including all the heads of the institutions and 164 students and 27 teachers. The current study used a self developed questionnaire and a semi structured interview as a tool. The study had found some of the effective ways through which we can transform HEIs into LO, such as awareness of learning organization culture among different stakeholders of HEIs, using the collective intelligence of learners during instructional processes, need to develop collective consensus among different stakeholders on dimensions of learning organization and required to implement in the practice of those dimensions etc. It had found that participants were also aware of the impact of transforming HEIs into learning organizations. An effective teaching contributes to the students’ performance and this
depends on qualified-trained teachers, school administration, parents and
conducive environment for teaching and learning. It is proven that students
are more successful in their academic achievements, in the societies where
teachers perceive their profession as their job. This paper explores the impact
of the society’s perception on teachers’ professionalism. The method
employed in this paper is qualitative by using interview technique and used
audio-recorded to ensure a complete transcript. The result indicated that in
some developing countries including Cameroon, Kenya and Fiji has various
reasons for their job. Teaching profession was affected by how the society
considers teachers whereby they are perceived as disadvantaged population
who cannot fully take part in the social and economic activities due to the
fact that their salary is very low compared other public servants. This low
salary and loss of respect of teachers by the society lead to the job
dissatisfaction and made the teaching profession as a transitional job before
waiting to move to another different professional field.

This study looks at some significant variables in Adventist schools in relation to organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). The study is designed to address the problem, “To what extent does the school climate relate to the OCB of the teachers?” The study seeks to provide a better theoretical understanding of OCB in Adventist schools in Kenya. One of the elements that enhance the performance of an organization is the OCB of its workers. Although OCB is important, little is known about the factors contributing to willingness of teachers going an extra mile in their workplace. The respondents were 170 teachers from Adventist schools in Kenya. The teachers responded to 2 instruments along with demographic variables.These were the Organizational Climate Index and Organizational Citizenship Behavior Scale.

Abstract
Within personal leadership education courses, leadership educators should include
experiences which help students develop themselves as leaders. In this article, the
authors discuss results from a qualitative research study involving the analysis of
Personal Growth Project (PGP) assignments in a personal leadership education
collegiate course. The authors analyzed PGP assignments using the lens of the
Leadership Identity Development model (Komives et al., 2005). All aspects of the
developing self component of the model including deepening self-awareness,
building self-confidence, establishing interpersonal efficacy, applying new skills,

and expanding motivations were evident in student reflections about their PGP.
The PGP assignment seems to be very effective in promoting the development of
students’ leadership identity, especially in the “developing self” category of the
Leadership Identity Model (Komives et al., 2005).
Introduction
“Personal growth is such an interesting thing that it almost isn’t fully
learned or understood until after the season of growth.” (Student B19)
Boyd and Williams (2010) identified a classroom assignment in a personal
leadership education collegiate course designed to foster life-long learning in
students. Students in this course are required to complete a personal growth
project where they learn a new skill or gain new knowledge. Students are allowed
to choose their project with the approval of the instructor. The students must
choose to learn something completely new. Examples of projects include learning
a musical instrument, learning to cook, learning a new physical activity such as
yoga, or expanding their spiritual awareness. Students document and reflect on
their personal growth throughout the project and connect course content to their
personal growth process. Course content includes topics such as emotional
intelligence, personality type, strengths, values, life purpose, creativity, and

As the only superpower in the world, the fundamental interest of the United States in the Syrian conflict
is to maintain its superpower status. Guided by this principle, the United States has important interests in Syria:
Toppling or at least the long-term weakening of the Syrian Assad regime; Containing Russian and Iranian
influence in Syria; Fighting terrorism such as ISIS to prevent Syria from becoming a terrorist base; Opposing the

Non-linguistic symbol is a carrier of language,which carries ideas, positions, attitudes and emotions
that people communicate. Based on the case of business communication and the theoretical framework of
semiotics, this paperprobes intothe influence of nonverbal signs on international business banquets from a
cultural perspective, and then puts forward relevant strategies to promote the smooth communication. The study
finds that nonverbal signs play a significant role in the communication and exchange of international banquets.
Nonverbal signs can be made use of to accurately understand the meaning of the other party, and further foster
the realization of effective communication. The purpose of this study is to aimed to provide correspondent
strategies for language barriers encountered in business banquets and business activities, in an attempt to
provide certain implications for such fields as business discourse research, business communication and
cultural exchanges.
Nawāl al-Sa'dāwī has criticised sharply the discourse of masculine God in her works, either
fiction or non-fiction. The phenomena is interesting to be analyzed since there are no many feminists who have
courageoulsy discuss the problem. By paying attention on her works, this paper is aimed to answer the
question: What are the forms of Nawāl al-Sa'dāwī's criticism on the masculinity in the discourse on God? What
is the positionisation of the criticism in the meaning of discourse on divinity and why did Nawāl Al-Sa'dāwī
criticise? The paper gives meaning to the reading on the deconstruction that emphasizes the plurality and
meaning of the relation between the signifie and signifiant in language. Nawāl al-Sa'dāwī offers a new meaning
which is different, humanistic, and visionary, since the masculinity of discourse on God had been structured by
the ruler as a philosophical basis for the theological justification to structurise the patriarchal point of view to
preserve women's subordination. She has made her deconstruction as a strategy for liberation of women and
establishment of their autonomy as their fundamental condition, a gift from God. This autonomy of women had
been actualised in the early history of mankind through the reconstructive reading on history of ancient Egypt
which has been done by her.
The contending forces generated by friction between the collaborative platform firms in the paid transportation of people’s market, and the regulation present in anti-trust policies in Costa Rica will be discussed in depth as a means of determining the economic impacts that new regulatory bills may cause.The recent entryof developing countries into the collaborative economy has caused social and economic tensions due to the lack of an updated and rejuvenated legal framework which could reconcile the economic and legal differences.The expected results of a new anti-trust policy to regulate collaborative transportation platform firms in Costa Rica are a higher regulated price, a lower quantity supplied of hailing rides, and a loss of efficiency in the sector consequence of the new technical requirements. The case of Uber Company’s entry in Costa Rica is used to depict these economic effects.
The Srebrenica event during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina has become one of the most
famous. It has also brought the first verdict of the criminal offense of genocide before the international
body after the Second World War. The purpose of this paper is not to attempt relativization of facts or to
answer the question of whether it was truly genocide in a subjective sense, but rather to comment on
judicial practice in those essential segments related to dubious questions and theses. The purpose is, of
course, to understand the issues in order to understand and classify other terrible events in the recent
war or current or future conflicts and trials more easily and correctly.
This paper examine the impact of macroeconomic factors on firm level equity premium. Following
the concept of macro-based risk factor model, we consider macroeconomic variable set of equity premium
determinant. The macroeconomic variables include interest rate, money supply, industrial production, inflation
and foreign direct investment. The macroeconomic variables are not in control of the firm's management. These
are the external factors which affect the company as well as the overall market returns. The Macro-based
Multifactor Model is estimated for the whole sample. It is found that the market premium and the selected five
macroeconomic factors significantly affect the firm level equity premium of non-financial firms. Increase in
market premium, money supply, foreign direct investment and industrial production positively affect the firm
level equity premium while increase in interest rate and inflation negatively affects the firm level equity
premium. These findings are beneficial for the common shareholders, institutional investors and policy makers
to find more specific insight about the relationship between macroeconomic variables and equity premium of
non-financial sectors.

In this Article the historical survey of puppet art in Pakistan are explained. The survey starts from
1947 to till now. The roots of this art are traced back to the Indus valley civilization, to the Sub Continent, and
eventually to the areas which are now known as Pakistan. Same like India there is no clear history of Puppet
art in Pakistan. This research concludes the details of the history after independence. Underlying research has
strived to explore the significance and the importance of the puppetry as art form and some extent for the sake
of education in Pakistan. This art is subject to decline because of lack of interest of the people in it. This
research explains to know the brief history about puppets stories its reasons and the struggle of the artist to
make this term so prominent. The research also counts the positive aspects of the puppetry that despite all the
odds is still alive and working in our society. Besides this many organizations are also contributing to this field
of art. It proves that the puppetry is in the cultural roots of the people of this region. If a nation is alive then its
art and culture is also alive. Underlying research contributes towards creating awareness for this art and
entertainment form.
Based on John Bailey’s theory of Cultural Adaptation, this research mainly focuses on the differences
between Chinese and the United States’ diet culture, analyzes the background and causes of differences between
Chinese and Western diet cultures, and further expounds the long-standing exchanges and collisions between
Chinese and Western diet culture differences so as to reveal the development status and existing problems of
international business activities under the diet culture differences. The study is aimed to provide certain references
for the elimination of cultural barrier in international business communication and thus promote the smooth
development of international market.
In Indonesia, forest fires become a problem every year during the annual dry season, when fires
are lit to clear and/or prepare land for agriculture. The smoke from the fires creates a haze that affects not only
the area where land is being cleared but also neighboring countries since it travels with the wind. This study
explores media framing related to haze that blanketed parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, through a
qualitative content analysis of the news stories published in 2017 in three leading English newspapers from the
three countries: The Jakarta Post (Indonesia), The Straits Times (Singapore) and The Star (Malaysia). A
theoretical framework from Semetko & Valkernburg (2000) who suggest five media framing (conflict,
responsibility, economic consequences, human interest, and morality) is used in the analysis. The research
questions: What were the main frames used in the three newspapers from the three countries? The results
indicate that responsibility was the most visible frame in the three newspapers. Alleged land clearance by
plantation companies and individuals was the main theme associated with the responsibility frame
and more, the discourse of as a vehicle through which messages are communicated in film
is taking centre stage. Its use necessitates an understanding not only of the vocabulary, but also of the content.
Cameroon filmmakers exploit language to expound and portray how the society is still constantly faced with the
problem of power manifestation and most especially, the marginalisation of women. Limits are set as to where
and what a woman can say in the presence of men. Considered a cultural marginalization, a woman’s words
are not to be heard in public spaces where men are. As such, language in traditional settings, sets limitations
for the woman in almost all aspects of life. Through a semiotic reading of Victor Viyouh’s Ninah’s Dowry and
circumscribed by feminist criticism, this paper attempts to portray the role of the sign in promoting male
domination in Cameroon. The woman is constructed by words and images as the weaker sex and subjected to
the men
The purpose of this study was to describe the use of newspapers as a source for English
Language Acquisition. Its aim was to investigate the extent of which newspapers can affect and enhance the
learning of English language. The Technical English curricular aims to extent learners’ English language
proficiency in order to meet their needs, in everyday life including for knowledge acquisition purposes, and for
workplace use. Effectiveness learning entails learning beyond the classroom. In this regard, newspaper may be
a good resource that can be used to promote and enhance English language learning. This study explored
whether newspaper as an alternative to the textbook able to arouse learners’ interests in learning English.
Newspaper as a tool for language learning.
This study was conducted in Institute Latihan Perindustrian Kuala Lumpur (ILPKL) to obtain students’
views on using the newspapers and to access the effects of its use on their learning. The quantitative modes used
for the data collections. The findings of the study indicated that the use of newspapers did indeed have positive
effect on learners. For the benefit of learners, it is therefore hoped that there, would be greater usage of
newspaper as source for English language acquisition in the classroom.
The goal of this work is to address, from the conceptual framework of theories on “deliberative
democracy”, the role played by the Judicial Power, being an integral part of the State, as the institutionalized
field of deliberation for making collective decisions.
In order to do this I will start by analyzing, from a legal-institutional perspective, the way in which the
National Constitution of Argentina distributes the functions of the State and how it divides the competences to
decide on the Public Thing. Furthermore, I will analyze which are the degrees of deliberation and of citizen
participation (direct or indirect) in each portion of the constituted power. Then, I will develop my intuition about
the way Justice operates as an institutional form of citizen participation within a Social State of Law, comparing
such proposal with the opinion of authors that highlight the countermajoritarian nature of the Judicial Power. I
will present some representative cases of the intervention of the Judicial Power in the making of
institutionalized public decisions, generated by the action of minorities with little or no political representation
and in which, after a deliberative practice, government measures that gave a positive response to the proposals
of the actors were ordered.
As an anticipation of my opinion, I will say that in our current Argentinian constitutional system there
is a paradox in which the Judicial Power (being, due to its origin, the least democratic of the powers) allows for
the development of procedural discursive practices, enabling the Public Decision Making to be the product of
the deliberation between parties (citizens and governments) on a level of equality and freedom of speech in
which arguments are exchanged in a rational way and in a previously regulated framework within a formalized
procedure.
This qualitative case study focused on developing a better understanding of a major utility
company’s knowledge management/customer service information and communications as well as practices
that were implemented during a catastrophic hurricane. The data collection and analysis procedure
revealed a gap when a comparison of the actual knowledge management practices that were used and not
used in the utility company’s customer response during the hurricane. Organizational practices of highperforming knowledge-management companies were used to analyze and compare their practices to utility
company. Findings from the analysis resulted in the establishment of a Balanced Scorecard framework for
recommended best practices and action steps with the potential to set new strategies and trajectories for
allorganizations.
The current work presents a literature review about life skills, which have been studied for a
long time; however, it was until 1993 when the World Health Organization (WHO) placed them among the 10
basic abilities which allow the individual to develop correctly in various contexts. From that year, a series of
actions were taken to standardize a common language around them and have derived in several promotion and
research around this topic. In many countries of Latin America and Spain, the teaching of life skills have been
incorporated into the basic education and shown good results since its implementation. Regarding higher
education, this proposal can prove promising in view of acknowledging that universities at present do not only
form specialists in a given discipline, but also promote integral development. It isconcluded that teaching life
skills in higher education can aid in the students’ integral development.
The services of local government legislators and customary court judges are often associated with
self-abnegation. However, most of these officials use their positions as money making ventures and material and
financial considerations have been the principal catalyst in the quest for such offices. It is because of these
recurrent occurrences in developing countries in general and Cameroon in particular that the study revisits the
situation in West Cameroon. It contends that most of these officials used their offices in amassing wealth as the
quest for increases in allowances and privileges became the common characteristic. Where these perceived
gains were not forthcoming, legislators and judges resorted to corrupt practices and their decisions/judgements
were often based on material and financial considerations. When some of them found it difficult to raise money
from services offered to their constituents, they simply abandoned their duties for personal businesses or juicy
opportunities elsewhere. The study concludes that legislation which warrants only selfless and dedicated
individuals to seek for these positions is needed. Again, it holds that local communities should be empowered to
sanction recalcitrant officials with little or no interference from central authorities. In this way, the engaging of
unpatriotic citizens in the management local government affairs will be checked.
The need to deepen the study of nationality formation and consolidation processes in Cuba, has
found in the Masonic fraternity an unobjectionable source of information, closely linked to the deepest roots of
nationalist thought and feeling. Masonic researches have become vital in unraveling the historical fabric that
gave way to the beginning of struggles for the Island independence.
The present research, as part of a doctoral thesis project -in the initial phase-, aims to elucidate the importance
this subject refers to researchers from Cuba and the world. It also pretends to focus on Freemasonry in
Guantánamo province, as an effort to explain the main factors that contribute to the social reproduction of
Masonic fraternity from a sociological perspective which is an insufficiently studied subject into the Cuban
context. The relationships that underlie the fraternal group's behavior and cohesion will be revealed by using
the prosopographic method, the theory of social networks and the analysis of socialization forms.
The article traces the genealogy of the concept of Nature and landscape from the romanticism to
the second industrial revolution. This archeology of ideas aims to dissect Nature as a subject of discourse in
order to propose it as an “empty container” filled with fantasy and which has been instrumentalized by
(sometimes) conservative power axes. The ongoing ecological crisis demands a set of new theoretical
approaches towards what is that thing “out there” that we call Nature since the romantic paradigm only gives
away a passive and contemplative image that serves to economic exploitation and aesthetical consumerism.
Through the lens of eco-criticism, the aim is to dismantle and deconstruct the fantasy of Nature by proposing
different entry points from interdisciplinarity and critical studies.
Using a theoretical concept by combining linguistic relativity and linguistic determinism – the
structure of our language; a set of specific selected words influence man’s perception of the world and language
use determines thought and action, data was collected and analysed qualitatively. The aim of the paper is to
illustrate the pertinence of culture in language use and actions with emphasis to explore the contextual symbolic
meanings of specific words in Africa nation states’ quest for peace. Specifically, in this paper we examine
carefully selected and uttered lexis and their significant meanings in Cameroon, South Africa and Uganda. The
results of the study confirmed that words have unique significance in relation to the culture, history and identity
of a particular African people. Words used in the Cameroon context, ‘all is well’, are mostly words of hope and
assurance in a war-free nation. The interpretation of some words, ‘Rhodes must fall’, generate disputes and
lead to violent actions in the search for peaceful and prosperous co-existence in an apartheid ridden country
like South Africa. Certain words of greetings, ‘you still exist’, though a total recall of pain and torture in a
period of turbulence and massacre in Uganda, portray gratitude and delightedness among citizens.

ABSTRACT: Positive Leadership has been introduced in numerous organizations and it has proved itself a
very effective approach, able to generate extremely positive results on people and on the key business aspects,
including the financials. The present paper describes a case study carried out in an Indian design academy,
where Positive Leadership was introduced into two different modules corresponding to the Foundation and final
years of the Design Program. Faculty were randomly selected, and they were then supported so that they could
conduct their classes according to the principles of Positive Leadership. After the implementation, the results on
students (their satisfaction, learning and academic success) and on faculty were analyzed and, like in so many
other spheres, Positive Leadership seems to be able to produce a clear improvement of the teaching-learning
process that presents an interesting opportunity for further implementation in Higher Education.

I. Introducing Positive Leadership
Leadership is one of those topics that has been extensively described and researched. Bestsellers provide easy
access to translations, interpretations and recommendations based on the leadership of historic figures, Marcus
Aurelius (Hicks and Hicks, 2002)[1], who ruledthe Roman Empire at its height, or US President Abraham
Lincoln (Phillips, 1992) [2] constitute two interesting examples. When it comes to easy reading, leadership is
also described through fables, like that by Patrick Lencioni (2005) in Overcoming the five dysfunctions of a
team[3]. And of course, we have thousands of scientific journals, some of them with very high impact factors,
where the most thorough studies and innovative theories are presented. The definitions of leadership are
innumerable, so many that there seems to be little room for creating others. For the authors of this paper,
leadership is linked to the idea of having a vision, and being able to engage people in order to make it happen.
For a university instructor, the vision might just be the importance of learning a subject for the future
professional career of his/her students, followed by the necessary motivation and guidance that will make
learning effective and students successful.

For the authors of this papers there is also a shared conviction that, in general, it is easier to perform better in a
positive environment, so highly dependent on the kind of leadership that generates it. A positive leader would
normally create a more inspiring vision, and define healthier conditions for the team to be engaged and succeed
in their endeavor. Lino (2017) [4] thinks that the essence of being a positive leader resides in focusing on the
best in others while working on becoming the best of ourselves.
It is in this context that the work of Kim Cameron, a professor from the University of Michigan and father of
Positive Leadership, has been examined, resulting particularly interesting, given its simplicity for practical
implementation and, more than anything, because of the extraordinarily positive impact that it has shown when
adopted by numerous organizations of very diverse nature.
Positive Leadership relies on four principles (Cameron, 2012) [5]: Enabling a positive climate where
compassion, forgiveness and gratitude are fostered; Establishing positive relationships, assuming that when
people receive love, support and encouragement, when they feel secured and valued their performance is
elevated; Enhancing positive communication where affirmative and supportive language replaces negative and
critical language; Finding the positive meaning that allows people to engage in work that is personally important
and that will ultimately create a positive impact.
Cameron (2013) [6] also offers a collection of tools and techniques that allow leaders and organizations to focus
on some key initiatives that will facilitate the incorporation of Positive Leadership. The author provides
guidance on how to create a culture of abundance, how to develop positive energy networks, how to deliver
negative feedback positively and how to establish and achieve what he calls Everest goals.
II. Applying Positive Leadership to Higher Education
Positive leadership is a tool which has changed many organizations and has impacted the way they work and
progress, though it is still very new for the Education sector. Bringing in change the way we look into our
classroom is utmost required, especially in Indian Higher Education.
As per Kurtz and Shelley (2009) [7], the leadership in any teacher can be inculcated when a teacher connects
professional with self goals and consciously facilitates on four dimensions: team development, self
development, students‟ development and institutional development. When the teacher is able to develop students
intellectually, spiritually and psychologically, this will lead to the transformation from a mere teacher to a
teacher leader.
Lavanya Raj (2009) [8]discusses this in her research paper with the use of a model which can be applicable to
teachers and educators. Her paper presents a teacher leadership model and has been coined as CID i.e. Connect,
Influence and Develop. The „connect‟ part of the model refers to the connection of the educator´s personal
goals, institutional goals and vision, purpose of education and the students. The „influence‟ parameter would
impact the four key stakeholders: leadership of the institution, parents, colleagues and students. Regarding the
„develop‟ criteria, it refers to identifying the students´ psychological needs and equipping them with solutions to
age related problems, educational problems and social problems, which is the iconic platform for the conversion
of a teacher from just an educator to a positive leader. (Sweeny, 2003) [9]
There has been no early research done in India on Positive Leadership in Higher Education, however there are
some interesting experiences like the program named „A life of Happiness and Fulfillment‟ by Indian School of
Business (ISB) which is based on emerging scientific research, specifically from „Positive Psychology‟. (ISB,
2019) [10]
Like Green et al (2011) [11] conclude for the lower levels of Education, the success of any educational
institution does not only depend on the academic excellence, but also on the holistic development and wellbeing
that it provides to its students, which also means that education should make students more proactive rather than

reactive in their approach. Such statement does not refer to Higher Education, but stands correct for it too. There
is an urgent need to help our students become future ready citizens and professionals, and it seems that Positive
Education might be successful approach, as shown in the numerous initiatives that Professor Seligman, often
referred to as the father of Positive Education, and a team of authors (Bott et al., 2016) [12] compiled in the
report on the State of Positive Education.
It is important to note that India‟s Higher Education system stands at world‟s third largest in terms of students,
which is just next to China and United States. Dr J D Singh (2011) [13] in his article clearly states that there
have been challenges in Indian Higher Education, but the change is required by clearly defining the role of
colleges and Universities in relation to new millennium, and also to specifically understanding the new scientific
research on how people learn.
Indian Higher education is governed by University Grant Commission, which generally governs Indian
Universities by enforcing standards and policies and also helps in coordinating between centre and state.
According to Department of Higher Education government of India there are more than 17,000 plus colleges
functioning under 2,000 plus universities (inclusive of government recognized, deemed and open universities).
Apart from these, there are private institutes that offer various professional courses in the Higher Education
level, and distance learning, which is also an important feature of the Indian system.
There are institutions in India like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) which are globally acclaimed for
their standard and quality of admission. More than 8000 students are enrolled in IIT every year, and its alumni
are considered to be world class and have contributed for the growth in both private and public sectors in India.
Yet Indian Higher Education system has failed to produce world class universities like Harvard and Cambridge
(Dr J D Singh, 2011) [13]. Maybe Positive Education can make a difference in creating a national change, based
the way teachers teach and students learn in the long run.
The incorporation of Positive Education would be possible, and so would the incorporation of the Positive
Leadership approach which, like the former, is linked to Positive Psychology. Benito et al (2018) [14] visibly
advocate for this approach, and have inspired the initiative described along these lines. They state that, like
people see work as a job sometimes, or as a career when they take broader look and aspirations, similarly
students can define their educational journey as completing a degree or hopefully as a professional career and
personal projection. This statement raises questions such as can more students be encouraged to have ideas,
enthusiasm and zeal that can guide their learning? Could students be subjected to an experience that helps them
picture how their future professional life will be, and make them visualize that how their future work will have a
positive impact on the society?
The members of this research team believe that eventually, by the introduction of Positive Leadership, the
process of teaching and learning in the Indian Higher education context could be made less harsh and more
humane, the engagement of teachers and students, and student contentment with the overall education
experience could increase, dropout rates of students could decrease and there could be an improvement of
learning effectiveness and a more holistic accomplishment of better outcomes.
III. A piloting initiative
The present pilot study takes place in a small private Indian institution of Higher Education, as part of a broader
international project where another three institutions, belonging to the same global network of universities were
also participating. Like in the case of the other international institutions, the hypothesis of the study was that, by
incorporating Positive Leadership in the teaching and learning process:
Student engagement and satisfaction will improve
Faculty engagement and satisfaction will improve

Academic outcomes will reflect more effective learning
Before the actual implementation of Positive Leadership started, quite a lot of preparatory work had to be done.
Several brainstorming sessions, followed by some interactions with Kim Cameron, resulted in the elaboration of
the Faculty Guidelines for the Incorporation of Positive Leadership into the Teaching and Learning process of
Higher Education, which contain the interpretation of the principles of Positive Leadership into our educational
context.
Faculty were then randomly selected, among those whose modules ran during the last quarter of 2018. One of
the instructors taught a module in “Analytical Design Methods” to year three students, and the other taught a
module in “Human Body and its Extensions” to foundation year students, both corresponding to the Design
Program. After their acceptance, faculty participated in the specific development program and planned their
classes, including some Positive Leadership ingredients in each one of them. As an example, below is the
journal of one of the instructors, corresponding to the first week of the module he imparted:
- Personal introductions. Asked each student what they hoped to learn in the workshop and gave a brief
overview of what the workshop is about and how it will enhance their design skills which they could use in
their upcoming final project, as well as in their careers as interior architects.
- Addressed each student by name. Huge challenge for me but I manage to remember all 20 names in just one
session.
- Requested them to change the layout of the room from a standard „class room‟ facing a white board to a
„studio‟ format of groups of students sitting around a table which encourages collaboration and
communication.
- Set up ground rules for mobile phones in the class as a mutual „agreement‟.
- Appreciating their opinions and contributions by thanking them each by name.
- Introducing them to a global role model („big‟ architects form Denmark) and their various architectural
projects.
- Asking them to manually copy the design process in their sketch books to develop manual sketching skills,
and to encourage focus, contemplation and reflection.
- Asking each student to present their sketches to the rest of the class and asking others to comment and
thanking them for their contributions to the discussion.
- Giving on going feedback on their work taking care to maintain ratio of 5:2 for positive to negative
comments.
- Introducing students to the notion of Ethical values in design and how every project by „big architects‟
embodies some social/ political/ human value.
- Making the connection between „Values‟ and how they can drive design concepts and innovation, be it for
small, medium or large projects.
- Asking students to start 1. A reflective journal 2. A gratitude journal.
- Asking students “What shall we do next week?”. They suggested an outdoor trip next week.
- Personally thanking each student by name and shaking their hand at the end of the day.

IV. Research methodology
The present research project adopted a mixed-methods approach, where quantitative and qualitative information
was concurrently gathered, analyzed and connected. In the case of quantitative data, descriptive statistics
utilizing means and percentages was produced, the analysis was then conducted, including the comparisons with
previous years when data were available. In the case of qualitative information, focus groups and interviews
were conducted and recorded, or summarized in writing by the actual informers. The thematic content was
analyzed, and the emerging key concepts identified and presented in the results section of this paper.

The first source of quantitative information was a specific anonymous survey that the participating students
completed, after being informed by the project leader. Only two demographic questions, regarding age and
gender, were included. The core of the survey consisted of four Likert questions (1-5 scale) and two binary
questions (yes/no): How satisfied are you with your experience in this subject?; How engaging were the
classes?; How much did you learn in this subject?; Did the instructor contribute positively to your
development?; In comparison with an average subject, would you say the experience in this subject was? and
Would you recommend this subject to other students?. Two open questions were incorporated at the end, about
what students enjoyed the most and general comments?
Additionally, some other quantitative student information was collected and analyzed: student general
satisfaction with faculty, attendance and grade distribution.
With regards to the qualitative information, the first source were the two focus groups with some students who
volunteered to participate. They were conducted by the project participants that did not have direct connection
with the students, and in order to ensure the comparability between both focus groups, they followed some
general recommendations and a common thread defined by the following guiding questions:
Describe your experience in this subject
Was it positive?
How was the interaction with the professor?
How was the interaction with other students?
How would you describe the class environment?
Do you see the sense of this subject in your future career?
How much do you value the human component in your learning experience? Can you give some
examples of what you experienced in this subject?
Would you recommend this kind of pedagogical approach? Why?
Finally the voice of faculty was incorporated as key qualitative information too. Individual interviews were held,
after which faculty directly expressed their main impressions in writing, as presented in section 6 of this paper.
V. Results on students
Students definitely expressed a positive difference in classroom experience both through the quantitative survey
and the qualitative focus group discussions and interviews.
During one of the focus group discussions, they shared that amazingly for the first time in their life, their faculty
would thank each student for coming to class every morning. One of the students expressed that „we were
surprised! But it felt very nice and we enjoyed it.‟ Adding further to this experience, students mentioned that
they felt a marked difference in the faculty‟s approach in the class. Whereas in previous experience with the
same faculty they only had one on one discussions; but this time they were encouraged to interact with peers and
faculty together through healthy discussions. This helped them develop confidence and also encouraged sharing.
Students started becoming more aware about other projects their classmates were working on and also learnt
from the feedback being given to them. They expressed that this interaction gave them the opportunity to learn
from 33 different projects and contributed to their learning. At the end of every session, each student was asked
to openly share what they learnt during the session. These were then summarized by the faculty to bring together
learning and close the session with clarity. They were also asked to maintain a gratitude journal, and this was
sometimes shared in the class, which had a positive impact.

With regards to comparisons with previous years, unfortunately the module where Positive Leadership was
incorporated was shared between three faculty members, which made it impossible to extract attendance and
grades information from the institution´s systems that would refer only to the participating instructor. Student
satisfaction with faculty, however, is personalized by instructor and could be compared with the results of the
previous year, showing an improvement of 32%.

With reference to the impact on the second group of students, during the focus group discussion, they shared
that the most positive thing they experienced was that the class was very interactive and two-way, teacher was
approachable, and their view points were not judged but appreciated, boosting their confidence in speaking in
class. Students found it to be very different from what they had been doing in their higher secondary schools.
They liked how their faculty started a topic and then gave them chance to build on it, which they experienced for
the very first time. See the table below regarding the key emerging concepts during the discussion:

For this second module, the comparison of attendance, marks and satisfaction with the previous year was
possible. Average attendance to class increased by 10% from previous year, and the average marks also
increased by 7%. Although the focus group discussion reflected a very positive student experience and support
by faculty, it did not show significant difference in the teaching quality feedback grade given by students.

VI. The voice of faculty
The direct voice of the faculty that participated in this pilot initiative are presented below. The text contains their
personal impressions, reflections and learnings:
Professor Badri:
“When I read the guidelines for incorporating positive leadership in teaching and Learning my first thought was
“Hey, these are very obvious good practices, and I have been incorporating many of them already in my long
teaching career”. But then there were some points I felt initially very awkward and skeptical about…e.g. A.
Remembering and addressing every student by name. I am terrible with names and after nearly 3 decades of
teaching, I felt I just couldn‟t be bothered. B. Greeting each student as they entered and thanking them as they
left. C. Maintaining positive to negative feedback ratio of 5:1.
The last one was especially tough because design pedagogy relies entirely on „crit‟ or critique. It is considered
good for the student to receive harsh, brutal critique in a design school as it strengthens their critical thinking,
improves their „defense‟ and prepares them to face the „real‟ clients in their careers. Yet, I grit my teeth and
faithfully followed the positive practices which in the beginning felt a bit staged and fake but I got habituated to
them in no time. As they say “Fake it till you make it”. I am a follower of Mahayana Buddhism and I found a
lot of resonances—cherishing others, avoiding harsh words, practicing humility and benevolence. It was a
matter of extending those habits to the class room.
The climate in the sessions was palpably positive and relaxed as students were in their natural, spontaneous
selves. They were laughing, joking, discussing, and playing music as they worked. Yet, their presentations were
engaging and serious. The atmosphere was nurturing and inspiring and on the whole I think the positive
strategies brought out the best in them. The average attendance was not so good but then I wonder not following
Positive Leadership would have made any difference to that anyway? In fact, I think it might have only made it
worse”
Professor Rupali:
“I was first introduced to the concept of Positive Leadership when Pearl Academy conducted workshops on it. I
was immediately excited about the ideas and as they resonated deeply with me. When I started working on the
Positive Leadership pilot, I was excited and my mind was buzzing with all the things I wanted to implement.
Recognizing that I had only five weeks I decided to focus on three strategies - foster a positive emotional
climate, build positive relationships and engage in positive communication. Almost all the activities we did were
centered on these strategies.
It was interesting to observe the students‟ response to the PL strategies being implemented. They felt
empowered and started voicing their opinions openly. They felt appreciated which made them more motivated.
Attendance was quite high for the module! They began to work as a team, helping each other and even standing
in for each other in times of need. Students actually started mirroring some of the strategies I was implementing,
without even knowing about the pilot and just through observation… e.g., maintaining a healthy ratio for
positive vs negative feedback during peer reviews, communicating respectfully and recognizing each other‟s
contribution toward team tasks.
I found the experience of the positive leadership pilot to be highly engaging. I learnt a lot about how my own
behavior affects and influences the behavior of those around me, especially that of students as they look up to
teachers and educators. This is not to say that I didn‟t face some challenges though. Remembering each
student‟s name and addressing them by their names was the biggest one. I tried to add an element of humor
every time I made a mistake by making jokes about my memory, but I have to admit, this is one challenge I
haven‟t completely overcome!!!”

VII. Conclusions and recommendations
This study confirms that Positive Leadership has the potential to greatly improve the teaching and learning
environment in higher education. The results from the pilot clearly show the beneficial effects of positive
leadership on both the class room experience and the outcomes, ratifying the hypothesis of the study. In this
particular initiative, the impact on the students was visible in different ways in each of the subjects. In one of the
cases, an increase in average module marks, and attendance was observed, while in another it increased the
teaching quality feedback grade for the instructor. Focus group discussions further validated that students were
more satisfied and felt that the sessions were more engaging and the way they learnt was in the positive
direction. They felt appreciated for even the smallest thing they did, which resulted in further motivating them.
Additionally, it is interesting to note the impact that it has had on the faculty themselves. They were more
energized, looked for more interesting things to do and felt empowered by the success of a positive climate in
the class. They themselves experimented in the classroom, reflected on the new experience, got new ideas and
developed hypothesis for further active experimentation. The stages defined byKolbs (2014) [14] regarding the
experiential learning cycle were energized by the positivity they generated, and faculty became eager learners
themselves.
This study confirms that Positive Leadership creates an active and enhanced learning environment in the
classroom. It would be beneficial to the teaching and learning in the Indian higher education sector to take this
pilot study ahead and do a longer term impact study of the same. It would be interesting to see if Positive
Leadership can help students develop more respectful, positive attitudes that prepare them better as
professionals and citizens. Further, those responsible for pedagogical training and development in India could
explore Positive Leadership as an important route to enhanced outcomes for both faculty and students.
In the particular field of Design, this pilot becomes even more relevant. In a design college, where most of
learning occurs through feedback and juries, the environment in the class and the relationship between the
mentor and the students are key to empowering the learners to do their best. Remaining in the creative arena, the
concept of creative leadership is also gaining strength these days, and could perhaps be made more effective by
incorporating Positive Leadership into it. In our interpretation of it, creative leadership aims to make the world a
better place, and consists of the strategies that will enable the realization of an innovative vision, where the
leaders will create favorable conditions to get the best out of everyone, and for them to engage, work
collaboratively and make positive change a reality.
