Chris Atherton (@finiteattention) at #DareConf Mini, 20th January 2014.
From the conference programme:
Other people can drive us crazy. So when understanding people forms a big part of your job, you have two choices: be driven crazy, or start finding people delightful, pronto. In this session, Chris will explain why understanding people for a living will make you happier. You’ll learn:
* the #1 rule for liking people more,
* how to use barely-games to start empathising with other people,
* how to start scary conversations by setting simple challenges (spoiler: they’re not really that scary), and
* how to turn conversations into services that do what your business and your customers actually want

Look around the room. Choose any object you see. The best one is the first one you think of. Now be the object and talk about yourself. For example : “I am the door. I am hard, square and wooden. ometimes I get in people’s way. But when I do, they just push me to one side…”
Discover a programme that brings together students, entrepreneurs & community groups to develop creative solutions to local challenges.
We help train students to co-design solutions from uncovering local needs with the community to working with them to develop projects that can be taken forward.
We evaluate the insights and impact of the needs & solutions to help public services better understand how to support communities to help each other & use technology.

This is one of the talks I gave at GDCOnline 2010. It is about how to meet and network with people at a game conference and was voted the #4 best talk at the conference.
Survey after survey lists The Fear of Public Speaking at the top of the ‘Fear List’ most people have. Some say they would rather die than stand in front of an audience and deliver a speech. This is unfortunate because it holds many back from reaching their potential.
Up to seventy-five percent of the population, to one degree, or another, has this dread.
When someone creates, writes or debates about anything, most of the time, he is describing his passions, his expertise via his past experiences or any jobs he had acquired skills in. All it takes is a little digging to uncover the truth because each of us is an expert at something.

This presentation was adapted from my TCUK09 talk on about half an hour's notice as I hadn't planned to present anything at PCL1! Interesting experience :)

Content strategists at Facebook plan, structure, and create content for more than a billion people. But they’re not writers or content marketers—they’re interaction designers, information architects, and UX practitioners. They design and build product experiences that are simple, straightforward and human.
And so can you. Content strategy isn't just for big organizations. It's for anyone who's building an experience. And by using our approach, you can start building better content.
In this presentation, you'll learn:
- How content strategy works in a context of product design and development
- A framework for minimum viable content that provides quality and consistency
- How to build and iterate on product content experiences to meet people's needs
- How to stand up and become a better advocate for the people using your products
Stand up for putting The Why before The How.
Stand up for value, ease of use, and craft.
Stand up for meeting (and exceeding) people's needs.
Stand up for BETTER CONTENT!

At Officevibe, we end our daily standup meetings with an inspirational quote to start the day on a positive note.
Whoever’s turn it is to speak holds a basketball, and the last one to speak has to come up with a quote of the day.
Everyone puts their finger on the ball, and when the quote is said, the ball gets thrown up in the air and we all say “think about it”, as a reminder to really let the hidden meaning of the quote sink in.

Racism. Sexism. Homophobia. Transphobia. Within our own communities, these concepts are not new—but the 2020 pandemic has shone a spotlight on these issues.
It was only February of this year that Prime Minister Kishida’s aide said he “didn’t even want to look at” same-sex married couples.
But surely, we’re not like that. We make technology to make the world better, not hurt it.
Well, there’s good news and bad news. The bad news is the technology that we make is not immune to our human biases, and we all have biases. The good news is we can change this. With a bit of courage and humility, we can take the next step into a new frontier of universal design—technology that can be useful to everyone, regardless of their race, ability, identity or sexual orientation. In this 2-hour interactive session, participants will explore together common types of biases in technology and tackle difficult conversations around product design and development decisions.
It will be led by CJ Hostetter (they/them), a designer with ten years of experience in UX design who identifies as nonbinary.
This workshop will take place in person and be centered around small-group discussions tailored to digging in deep and sharing personal predicaments around bias in tech.
Beyond your studies ~ You studied X at Y. now what?
HackPra, July 2018
A student's life ago, the author somehow managed to graduate.
On the way, he made a lot of mistakes -- and he still does.
A few people since called him 'successful', but LOL, if only they knew....
And now, the author will do another (big!) mistake:
instead of hiding in shame as he probably should,
he'll share his mistakes with anyone bored enough to attend,
in the hope that he's the last person to ever look that dumb to commit such mistakes.
If you're a genius and you know what to do in life, please skip this. Seriously.
If, like the author at the time, you wonder WTF is going on with graduation, professional work and life, then hopefully you learn a few things. Maybe.
Btw the author is 42 (WTF - old!).
Maybe that will help to provide a few answers.
Attraction is a strange thing which helps you in make things impossible to possible. A person can be perfectly handsome or beautiful, but if they are not attractive, their beauty can go unnoticed. Being attractive doesn't mean that we should be pretty
The fresh thinking that led to a company’s initial success is often replaced by a rigid devotion to the status quo.

141. Assertive Tech and Practice explained by S. Lakshmanan, PsychologistLAKSHMANAN S
Many of us don’t handle interpersonal relationships well, particularly at work. Instead of feeling good about ourselves, our reactions and responses to others often make us feel tongue-tied and inadequate, on the one hand, and angry and critical on the other. Here are some of the ways to deal with everyday situations and come out feeling good.

Title: Uncomfortable UX: making life difficult and improving your product
Description: No wireframe survives contact with the user. This is great for UX people, because it means our lives are never dull — but it also makes things complicated for developers who just want to get on and build something. While it can be uncomfortable to challenge a team’s assumptions about what you are building and who it’s for, it is absolutely worthwhile. In this session, I will talk about:
* getting over the fear of putting something half-finished in front of users
* how to get fast feedback from your users
* different ways to involve your team in research
* quick methods for communicating research findings
* some surprising ways that continuous feedback from users benefits everyone
Lightning talk (20 slides x 15 seconds each) given by Chris Atherton at Content Strategy Lightning talks in London, 26th Feb 2013. All mistakes my own :o)
This talk was most definitely for fun — an after-hours audience, with beer. The format of Bettakultcha talks is 20 slides for 15 seconds each (they transition automatically), and you can talk about anything you want.
This was my first time using hand-drawn slides; I had fun. Annotations were added afterwards so this made some kind of sense when uploaded :)
And no, I don't get any kind of kickback for mentioning Paper for iPad. I just think it's brilliant.
(Subtitle — User Experience: an Agony in Eight Fits)
Talk given by Chris Atherton at Technical Communication UK, 22nd September 2010.
The idea of this presentation was to introduce some findings from experimental psychology that might influence user experience design. Also, it was fun to see how riled up people can get about shower control design ... :)
Ph.D. thesis by Dr Chris Atherton that uses functional brain imaging to establish the mechanisms of object constancy underpinning misoriented shape recognition. The thesis has two introductory chapters: the first on psychometric studies of object recognition, the second on brain-imaging and neuropsychological investigations in the field. Of the three experimental chapters, two use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the areas of of the brain associated with viewpoint-dependent and -independent object recognition, and one uses event-related potentials (ERPs, an application of EEG), to assess the relative temporal engagement of these areas. The final chapter brings together the results of the experimental chapters to make some suggestions about the likely nature of object constancy mechanisms.
Slides from a talk by Dr Chris Atherton from the University of Central Lancashire about the brain's limits of attention and cognitive load, and how we can work around that to ensure that we still have people's attention (in education, technical communication, etc)

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
