A student's life ago, the author somehow managed to graduate.
On the way, he made a lot of mistakes -- and he still does.
A few people since called him 'successful', but LOL, if only they knew....
And now, the author will do another (big!) mistake:
instead of hiding in shame as he probably should,
he'll share his mistakes with anyone bored enough to attend,
in the hope that he's the last person to ever look that dumb to commit such mistakes.

We live, learn, and remember through story. Our brains weave each experience into the overall narrative that shapes who we are. Yet seldom do we step back to examine or consciously shape the overall story of our lives. As designers, many of us have a desire to change the world. And yet, as Leo Tolstoy said, “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” If design is change, if we want to use design to effect change, shouldn’t we first think about changing ourselves by designing our own story? For the stories we tell ourselves can change the way we see the world and, by extension, change the world itself.

Humans are naturally curious beings, but as Sir Ken Robinson suggests, schools may have unintentionally squashed out the creativity and inquisitive nature of many of students. While ubiquitous digital devices provide us with the opportunity to find the answer to almost any question, many students struggle to find accurate information online. Now more than ever, we must teach our students to be critical consumers of the information that they encounter. Together we will explore and construct technology resources designed to engage students’ curiosity and learn ways to compose better questions for application and synthesis.

Some people, those with physical retail locations say it is all about Location, Location, Location. For business professionals, I say it is all about Network, Network, Network. But hear me now, and listen to me later, it is NOT about random networking with a HOPE of finding someone that might be worth knowing - unless you are simply looking to fill up on cheap heavy hors d'ouvres. It IS about planned networking and increasing the odds that the people you network with (and the people that network with you) will end up making valuable connections for the future.
The perspective of this presentation is for those people that believe they are "introverted" and concerned about how to get started networking.

Who do I want you to become? Someone who dreams beautiful dreams. Someone who helps others dream beautiful dreams. Someone who designs for dreams.
For it is through beautiful dreams that we will create more beautiful organizations, communities, and the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.

From cave walls to Facebook walls we have always embraced visual communication. Dual coding theory of cognition reiterates the importance of visual imagery in respect to our thinking processes - that in fact we need visual language in addition to verbal or text-based coding of stimuli. With the changing media landscape, our streams, memes, and zines have exploded with imagery, ushering in a need for visual literacy skills. We are quickly moving from images as decoration and augmentation to images as sole content and communication tool. We have some false beliefs about visual language - that it is equated with “art”, requiring “talent” from “creative types” - and therefore it is unfortunately often not overtly taught and practiced in schools. Technology has affected knowledge in such a way as to diminish the value of “raw” information and increase the value of sense-making, as well as chip away at attention spans, sparking a need for distillation of complex ideas. Images can essentialize the cumbersome in beautiful ways. They have a “stickiness” for the viewer and challenge the critical thinking of the creator.

Unstructure: Smashing the Boundaries of Data (SxSWi 2014)Ian Varley
When it comes to thinking about data, most software designers are stuck in a rigid, 2-dimensional mindset: "rows and columns." A shame, because breaking free from this "tyranny of the table" can bring our software to new heights: intuitive user experiences, fast development iterations, and cohesive apps.
In this workshop, we'll cover a few concepts that bring data design out of the 1970s, like: sparse representation, emergent schema, ultra-structure, prototype-driven design, graph theory, traversing the time dimension, and more. We'll run the gamut of philosophical approaches to understanding what is important in your mental (and software) model, and how to transcend your two-dimensional picture of data, and trade it in for an N-dimensional one.
Working hands-on with a simple "mock company" and its new killer app, you'll learn:
* The basic concepts of data design: entities, relationships, attributes, and types (along with a few better ways to notate them)
* How to experiment with creating these data structures in a couple existing cloud-based frameworks (e.g. google apps engine, force.com, heroku, etc.).
* How emergent techniques like schema-on-read and ultra-structure can simplify modeling (or, sometimes, complicate it)
* How statistical techniques from the data mining world can loosen our insistence on rigid models
* Why the time dimension is important (in data as well as schema)

From space to magic, from basketball to fashion, from animation to computer games, from film music to architecture we have a trans-disciplinary tour of storytelling and creative careers.
We have a lot of puzzles. We have a series of exercises in asset creation and imagination.
In one of these exercises, you will have the opportunity to practice screenwriting, world-building, and storytelling.
However, the main actor in all of this experience (the connecting thread/anchor) is a squash.

TL;DR
- Attack surface with file formats is too big.
- Specs are useless (just a nice ‘guide’), not representing reality.
- We can’t deprecate formats because we can’t preserve and we can’t define how they really work
- We need open good libraries to simplify landscape, and create a corpus to express the reality of file format, which gives us real “documentation”.
- Then we can preserve and deprecate older format, which reduces attack surface.
- From then on, we can focus on making the present more secure.
- We don't need new formats: reality will diverge from the specs anyway - we need 'alive' (up to date, traceable) specs.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.

Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. minutiae in obscure algorithms, this category requires actual pwnage.
The first collision for full SHA-1

The SHAttered attack team generated the first known collision for full SHA-1. The team produced two
PDF documents that were different that produced the same SHA-1 hash. The techniques used to do
this led to an a 100k speed increase over the brute force attack that relies on the birthday paradox,
making this attack practical by a reasonably (Valasek-rich?) well funded adversary. A practical collision
like this, moves folks still relying on a deprecated protocol to action.
