Colonialism in
India
 Colonialism is the policy
of a country seeking to
extend or retain its
authority over other
people or territories,
generally with the aim
of economic dominance.
In the process of
colonisation, colonisers
may impose their
religion, economics, and
other cultural practices
on indigenous peoples.
 Britishers Colonised
India.
 How Forests were used before British
Rule?
A) Adivasis and villagers used to
• Fulfill their basic needs and necessities
from Forests
• They were the owners of the Forests.
 Adivasis and Villagers used forests before
British Started ruling, are for Hunting,
Gathering Wood, Fruits, Flowers and
Herbs and for Grazing their cattle.
 People living in forests gave valuable gifts
of ivory, animal skins and honey to the
kings and emperors and also paid taxes.
 Kings or Emperors did not make laws or
rules to control Adivasis.
 So, Adivasis used to live in Harmony with
their Forests.
 How Forests were used during British
Rule?
A) Sleepers for Railway Lines
B) Forest in Danger and the Need to Plant
New Trees
C) The Govt Sets up a Forest Department.
 Adivasi Revolts:
 Adivasi Farmers who lived in the jungle
became worse in British times.
 Baiga, Muria, Gond and Bhil tribes of Madhya
Pradesh and Chattisgarh
 The Koya, Reddy and Kolam tribes of
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
 The Saora adivasis of Orissa were no longer
able to practice their old forms of Cultivation.
 Britishers forced to become Labourers for the
Forest Department or Bonded Labourers.
 They ill-treated women, took bribes, got
begar (free labour) done by people
 The Adivasis started Protesting against such
atrocities in many places.
 The Santhal Revolt(1855-1856)
 Huge Revolt
 Santhals started looting and killing the
zamindars and moneylenders.
 Santhals declared the British rule come to
an end.
 But they were armed only with bows and
arrows were not strong to stand against
British army.
 By the end of a fierce battle, 15000
Santhals were killed and their revolt was
finally suppressed
 The Revolt Led by Birsa Munda(1874-1901)
 Young man named Birsa from Munda
Adivasis.
 They wanted to get rid of the British
Government that protected the
zamindars, the moneylenders and the
courts of law that had deprived their
rights over their forests.
 Finally Birsa was arrested and put them
behind bars.
 Birsa Munda died in Prison in 1900.
 Govt was forced to make law to protect
the rights of the Adivasis of Cchotanagpur.
 Forest revolt in Kumaon (1921-22)
 Peasants started protesting against Govt.
 Because their rights over the forest were
being taken away.
 They openly broke the rules of the Forest
Department.
 They burn the jungles used by
contractors.
 Refused to do forced labour.
 British Govt had to change its policies.
 Outsiders can not purchase the land of
the Adivasis
 Alluri Seetha Rama Raju
 Born July 4, 1897
 Pandrangi Village in
Visakhapatnam district.
 Raju led a protest
because they stopped
traditional ‘podu’
agricultural system.
 Raju Raided police
stations in and around
 Chintapally,
Rampachodavaram,
Dammanapalli etc.,
 Finally Shot dead with a
rifle at Koyyur Village
near Mampa Village in 7
th May, 1924
 Komaram Bheem
 Born at Sankepally Village
in Komarambheem
District.
 Killed Siddhiki because he
occupied Bheem’s land
and escaped from police.
 Later learned how to read
and write
 Message Jal, Jangal,
Jameen (Water, Forest,
Land)
 Bheem formed guerrilla
army.
 Komaram Bheem died in
the battle against the
Nizam’s army in Jodeghat
forest.

Impact of colonialism in india

  • 2.  Colonialism is the policy of a country seeking to extend or retain its authority over other people or territories, generally with the aim of economic dominance. In the process of colonisation, colonisers may impose their religion, economics, and other cultural practices on indigenous peoples.
  • 4.  How Forests were used before British Rule? A) Adivasis and villagers used to • Fulfill their basic needs and necessities from Forests • They were the owners of the Forests.
  • 5.  Adivasis and Villagers used forests before British Started ruling, are for Hunting, Gathering Wood, Fruits, Flowers and Herbs and for Grazing their cattle.
  • 6.  People living in forests gave valuable gifts of ivory, animal skins and honey to the kings and emperors and also paid taxes.  Kings or Emperors did not make laws or rules to control Adivasis.  So, Adivasis used to live in Harmony with their Forests.
  • 7.  How Forests were used during British Rule? A) Sleepers for Railway Lines B) Forest in Danger and the Need to Plant New Trees C) The Govt Sets up a Forest Department.
  • 8.  Adivasi Revolts:  Adivasi Farmers who lived in the jungle became worse in British times.  Baiga, Muria, Gond and Bhil tribes of Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh  The Koya, Reddy and Kolam tribes of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh  The Saora adivasis of Orissa were no longer able to practice their old forms of Cultivation.  Britishers forced to become Labourers for the Forest Department or Bonded Labourers.  They ill-treated women, took bribes, got begar (free labour) done by people  The Adivasis started Protesting against such atrocities in many places.
  • 9.  The Santhal Revolt(1855-1856)  Huge Revolt  Santhals started looting and killing the zamindars and moneylenders.  Santhals declared the British rule come to an end.  But they were armed only with bows and arrows were not strong to stand against British army.  By the end of a fierce battle, 15000 Santhals were killed and their revolt was finally suppressed
  • 10.  The Revolt Led by Birsa Munda(1874-1901)  Young man named Birsa from Munda Adivasis.  They wanted to get rid of the British Government that protected the zamindars, the moneylenders and the courts of law that had deprived their rights over their forests.  Finally Birsa was arrested and put them behind bars.  Birsa Munda died in Prison in 1900.  Govt was forced to make law to protect the rights of the Adivasis of Cchotanagpur.
  • 11.  Forest revolt in Kumaon (1921-22)  Peasants started protesting against Govt.  Because their rights over the forest were being taken away.  They openly broke the rules of the Forest Department.  They burn the jungles used by contractors.  Refused to do forced labour.  British Govt had to change its policies.  Outsiders can not purchase the land of the Adivasis
  • 12.  Alluri Seetha Rama Raju  Born July 4, 1897  Pandrangi Village in Visakhapatnam district.  Raju led a protest because they stopped traditional ‘podu’ agricultural system.  Raju Raided police stations in and around  Chintapally, Rampachodavaram, Dammanapalli etc.,  Finally Shot dead with a rifle at Koyyur Village near Mampa Village in 7 th May, 1924
  • 13.  Komaram Bheem  Born at Sankepally Village in Komarambheem District.  Killed Siddhiki because he occupied Bheem’s land and escaped from police.  Later learned how to read and write  Message Jal, Jangal, Jameen (Water, Forest, Land)  Bheem formed guerrilla army.  Komaram Bheem died in the battle against the Nizam’s army in Jodeghat forest.
