Immigration is one of the key issues which will affect how people vote in the upcoming EU referendum, along with the effect on the economy and Britain’s sovereignty, a new Ipsos MORI study published today finds.
The survey of c.4,000 British adults is the latest in a unique longitudinal study which looks to track how individuals’ views on immigration change over time.

According to the Ipsos MORI poll of 1,000 British Adults, half (52%) say they have a good understanding of virtual reality, (13% strongly agree they have a good understanding) and 47% want to try it out.
Owner-occupation is the clear tenure of choice for most Britons but they think politicians are not being honest about the prospects for people to own. These are among findings from new research by Ipsos MORI published today by the Chartered Institute of Housing.
The survey, conducted by Ipsos MORI in advance of the EU Referendum vote and the CIH’s annual conference in Manchester, found 46% of the view that people have equal opportunities to get ahead in Britain, a drop of seven points since 2008.

In a new study from Ipsos MORI we shed light on the relationship between how people voted in the EU Referendum and their support for the two main political parties. The study finds that on some attitudes leavers and remainers are united, despite 27% of Labour voters who voted in the Referendum voted to leave, compared to 60% of Conservative Referendum voters.
The similarities among leavers and remainers across the political divide include: immigration, nostalgia for the past and distrust in globalisation. With just two months to go until Britain decides whether it will remain a member of the European Union or leave, Ipsos MORI’s latest Political Monitor reveals the economy and immigration to be the most important issues for the public when deciding how to vote. Two in three (32%) say the impact on the economy will be very important in helping them decide how to vote, just ahead of immigration which was mentioned by 27%.
When looking further into these figures there is a clear difference on what issues are most important between those that want to remain in the EU and those who want to leave. Two in five (40%) of those who will vote to remain say the economy is very important to them while 14% say immigration. This compares to one in five (21%) of those voting to leave mentioning the economy and almost half (47%) saying immigration. Other important issues for the public include Britain’s ability to make its own laws (14%, rising to 25% of leave supporters), the cost of EU immigration on the welfare system (12%), Britain’s ability to trade with other EU countries (11%), and the impact on British jobs (11%).

This is the 21st meeting of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21). The goal is to reach a consensus on a legally binding agreement that will enable member states to move into a more energy-efficient and greenhouse gas-reducing economy.

The January 2016 Issues Index shows that, after an absence of one month, concern about immigration has returned to the top of the list of the most important issues facing Britain. Approaching half (46%) of the public mention this issue, and for a quarter (25%) it is the single most important issue facing the country. This is an increase of six percentage points from last month, though concern peaked at 56% three months prior to that.

Three in ten (31%) now say they are concerned about the EU – down 9 points from July – although it is still seen as the single most important issue (mentioned by 21% as their most concerning issue).

The Conservatives have increased their lead on managing the economy over Labour, new polling from Ipsos MORI shows. More than four in ten (45%) think the Conservatives have the best policies on managing the economy, compared with 20% for Labour, giving the Tories a 25 percentage point lead. This is up from a 13 point lead just six months ago, when 35% backed the Conservatives on this issue, against 22% for Labour.
The March 2016 Economist/Ipsos MORI Issues Index shows the prominence of the European Union as an issue facing Britain continuing to increase, with one quarter (23%) of the public now mentioning it as one of the most important issues facing Britain, compared to one fifth (20%) in February. Those most likely to mention the EU as an important issue are those living in south-east England excluding London (37%) and those who voted Conservative at the last election (42%), compared to those living in the Midlands (20%) and Labour voters (16%).
This month the Ipsos MORI Issues Index shows that the public consider concerns about the EU and Britain’s exit to be the leading issue facing Britain. At 39%, concern has risen seven percentage points since October, and now stands just one percentage point behind the level recorded in July this year, when concern reached the highest level since April 1997 in the immediate aftermath of the Brexit vote.
This month's Economist / Ipsos MORI Issues Index charts the continued rise in concern about the European union (EU) as an issue facing Britain. 30 per cent of the public now believe that this is one of the most important issues facing Britain - the highest recorded level since December 1999.
Ipsos MORI’s July Political Monitor reveals that over half (55%) believe that Theresa May has what it takes to be a good Prime Minister, up from 28% in July 2015. Her ratings are particularly high among Conservative voters, among whom 81% think she has what it takes.
Mrs May’s ratings are well ahead of those for Andrea Leadsom and Boris Johnson. One in five (18%) think that Andrea Leadsom has what it takes to be a good PM (20% among Conservative voters), and 21% say the same about Boris Johnson (23% among Conservative voters). Mr Johnson’s ratings have fallen since last year – now 70% disagree he has what it takes, up from 52% last July. Fieldwork was conducted 9-11 July, with the vast majority carried out before Andrea Leadsom retired from the race.
A new global survey in 25 countries looking at what issues worry the world. This is the first wave of this monthly survey, which finds that Britons are the most worried out of all 25 countries about immigration and rising extremism. However, Britons are relatively positive about the direction the country is headed in, with 44% saying they think things are going in the right direction.
The 2016 Veracity Index, Ipsos MORI's annual index of which jobs and professionals are most trusted by the public finds that nurses are the most trusted profession in Britain, followed closely by doctors, while politicians once again bring up the rear. Public trust in politicians has slipped a considerable six percentage points since last year, and they are now trusted to tell the truth by just 15% of the British public.
The February 2017 Ipsos MORI/Economist Issues Index reveals the shifting focus of public opinion; over half of the British public (52%) now see the NHS as one of the biggest issues facing Britain, a further increase since January and the highest level of concern since June 2002. At the same time, concern with the economy has dropped to pre-crash levels, with 19% seeing it as a big issue – the lowest level since February 2008.

As David Cameron ramps up his efforts this week to secure a new deal for Britain in the EU Ipsos MORI’s latest Political Monitor reveals little change from January amongst the public when it comes to how they will vote in the referendum on EU membership. When asked the referendum question “should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?” the poll finds a majority (54%) would vote to remain a member (down 1 point from January) and 36% would vote to leave (no change). Ipsos MORI’s trend question on EU membership also reveals little difference from last month. When asked “if there were a referendum now on whether Britain should stay in or get out of the European Union, how would you vote?” half (51%) would vote to stay in (up 1 point) while 36% would vote to get out (down 2 points).
The July 2016 Economist/Ipsos MORI Issues Index records the highest level of concern about Europe and the EU since April 1997 – 40% consider it an important issue facing the country in the aftermath of the referendum decision to leave the EU in June. This is an eight percentage point rise since last month, when 32% considered it an important issue. Fieldwork was conducted between the 1st and 11th July, in the immediate aftermath of the referendum vote.
Business and Brexit: The risks of taking a stanceIpsos UK
British adults think that businesses should be involved in the EU referendum debate – but that doesn’t mean they will trust them. When asked whether different types of business should take part in the EU referendum campaign, support was high for British businesses to participate by publicly backing one side or the other, especially SMEs. However, this does not necessarily mean the public trust what big businesses say on the issues.
The new survey finds three-quarters (75%) of the public say that small and medium-size British businesses should participate in the debate – more than say the same for other groups such as academics (68%), think tanks (54%) and newspapers (52%). The contributions of SMEs are more welcome than those of big businesses – but still nearly seven in ten (69%) of British adults are happy for big British businesses which trade internationally to make their opinion on Brexit known. However, while three-fifths (57%) say that they trust small business owners on issues relating to the referendum, leaders of large businesses fare worse, being trusted on the issues by just three in ten (29%).

Just under half (44%) say that migration has had a positive impact on Britain according to a new Ipsos MORI survey among British adults aged 18-75. Three in ten (30%) say migration’s impact has been negative on the country while one in five (20%) say its impact has been neutral. These findings are consistent with previous research by Ipsos MORI which found the British public’s attitudes towards migration have become more positive since the referendum.

The majority of the public (61%) agrees that the Windrush scandal is mainly a result of government incompetence rather than the rules on immigration compared with just over one in ten (12%) who disagree. Levels of agreement are fairly similar among Leavers (65%) and Remainers (63%) but higher among Labour supporters (70%) than Conservative supporters (59%).
Two in five people (43%) agree that the experiences of people caught up in the Windrush scandal show that the British government is being too hostile towards immigrants. A quarter (24%) disagree and a similar proportion neither agree nor disagree (23%). Labour supporters (65%) and Remainers (61%) are much more likely to agree the government is hostile towards immigrants than Conservative supporters (28%) and Leavers (26%).

New polling by Ipsos MORI finds most Britons are pessimistic about Theresa May’s likelihood of success to hit her target to cut net migration to the “tens of thousands” in the next few years. Two in three (68%) say that it is either not at all likely or fairly unlikely that the Conservatives will be able to achieve this target while just 18% think that they will. Nevertheless, when it comes to deciding what a “sustainable” level of net migration should be only one in five (20%) think this is would be 100,000 or above (after being told that it currently stands at 273,000). Economic optimism has fallen to its lowest level since the 2008 financial crisis, according to Ipsos MORI’s new Political Monitor. The new poll, conducted between 13-16 March, so before some of this week’s emergency measures were announced, shows seven in ten (69%) now say they think the economy will get worse in the next 12 months – this is up from 42% in February. Just 15% think that the economy will improve, leaving an Economic Optimism Index score of -54. The last time pessimism was this low was in November 2008 (at its worst during the 2008 crisis 75% thought the economy would get worse). Despite this pessimism, around half (49%) believe the Government is handling the coronavirus outbreak well (35% say badly).

The threat of the Covid-19 could have a significant impact on the UK public’s behaviour, according to an Ipsos survey conducted online from February 7 to 9, 2020 among 8,001 adults aged 16 (18) -74 in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Two-thirds of people in the UK say they would consider avoiding travelling to infected countries or areas (65%), while three in ten would avoid large gatherings of people or travelling by air for holidays (both 29%). A quarter say they would avoid shaking hands with others (26%), and one in five say they would avoid travelling by public transport (22%).
This study did not have any external sponsors or partners. It was initiated and run by Ipsos with the intention to share our understanding about the world we live in and how citizens around the globe think and feel about their world.

The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
